X-Files -- One of the great shows of the 1990's. The only reason I cannot give this show a higher rating is because of the mediocre last few seasons. hide show

The X-Files television show had (and still has) a cult following worldwide. During the 1990's X-File mania swept the globe - particularly the United States and Japan, according to TV rating reports at the time. The X-Files was created by screenwriter Chris Carter. . It first aired in September 1993 and ended in May 2002.

In the series, FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) are the investigators of X-Files: marginalized, unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena. Mulder is a believer in the existence of aliens and the paranormal, while Scully, a skeptic, is assigned to make scientific analyses on Mulder's discoveries. Early in the series both agents become pawns in a larger conflict (termed the "mythology" or "mytharc" by the producers), and come to trust only each other. They develop a close relationship, which begins as a platonic friendship, but develops into a romantic relationship by the end of the series' run. In addition to the long-term story arc, "monster of the week" episodes made up roughly two-thirds of the series. In such stand-alone X-Files episodes, Mulder and Scully investigated bizarre crimes with few long-term implications on the storyline. The X-Files had become the longest-running science fiction series in US broadcast television history (thank you Wiki for that, and other interesting tidbits), keeping that title until the hit show Stargate SG-1 made it rounds on the Sci Fi Channel (now called the SyFy Channel).

The X-Files has had an amazing influence, both on popular culture, as well as an impact on hit science fiction shows that followed the X-Files.

I'm sure people will be watching (and watching) the X-Files for many years to come!

The X-Files may have saved my life.
In the inimitable words of Sarah Palin, "I kid you not.".
I owe Chris Carter a sincere debt of gratitude... as well as David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.
I loved and will always love The X-Files. hide show

I'm always late. I was late to "The X-Files". I didn't have a television set (my own choice) until about the third year into the series. I finally gave in one day and acquired one of the evil little boxes. Shortly afterward, I unexpectedly stumbled upon the dynamic duo of Special Agent Fox Mulder and Special Agent Dana Scully... and after seeing a few episodes, I could have kicked myself for missing those first three years.

Luckily, I was able to catch up on those first three years of episodes, once the show was syndicated. But, even today, if I come across a DVD of The X-Files, I scan it carefully... looking for an episode title or storyline that I don't recognize, just in case I find that there was an episode that I had missed.

For me, "The X-Files" stands alone as a modern classic of science fiction. It is terrific storytelling. It's folklore mixed with legend mixed with campfire stories mixed with ghost stories mixed with Ripley's... mixed with The Truth, here-and-there. When it was scary, it was cover-your-eyes/"I can't watch" scary. Most episodes - and the ongoing storyline - were consistently written with wit and humor as well as thoughtful intelligence and hold-your-breath suspense.

The casting of Duchovny and Anderson was brilliant, as they shared great on-screen chemistry and displayed great acting chops. Agents Scully and Mulder - as characters - were beautifully written and were fleshed-out. They weren't made into pseudo-superheroes, they were both utterly human... each with their own positive and negative character traits and the frailties of two human beings.

I love "The X-Files" and I will always love "The X-Files". I'd highly recommend it to anyone with a brain... particularly if you have any interest in unusual phenomena/extraordinary experiences. Or, even just to watch something several notches above (and much more interesting than) so-called "Reality" shows.

In my humble opinion, "The X-Files" is Extraordinary Television.

How did "The X-Files" save my life?
Well... It's kind of personal... you know... between Chris Carter and I...
O.K. ~ Let's just say that I shared a harrowing and horrifying experience with one of the characters in one episode. (I'll not be more specific than that.)
But, there were two distinct differences between my horrible experience and his: In the show, his experience only lasted about a month. My real-life experience, unfortunately, went on for years.
    The other difference?
He - the tormented character - eventually killed someone because of what he was experiencing.
I, on the other hand, refrained from spilling anyone's blood because of what I was experiencing.
Which made me feel so much better about the way I was dealing with certain events... "Hey, at least I haven't killed anyone."

To someone, like myself, who occasionally has extraordinary experiences, "The X-Files" was not just entertaining and thrilling...
But, it also helped me to feel better about my experiences - both because of how differently (and much better) I dealt with the inexplicable and often unsettling events in my life and also that it showed me - at a time that I felt alone in the universe - that someone else knew about things that I experienced... that I wasn't entirely alone.

Agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder? We have a new case for you... You must come back! Greatest series about aliens, ever! hide show

I still remember the first time I saw these two, and although I must admit that at first I thought that the series was not very interesting, but then, I started watching it, and I could not stop wondering what would the next case be, and what kind of dangers they would run into. It was a really spectacular show, and although the series became a little less intriguing from season 8 onwards, I can still say that it was probably one of the best of its kind during the 90's. Personally, I give this one a 10 out of 10.

I miss Mulder and Scully. I miss Skinner and the Lone Gunmen. I miss Cigarette Smoking Man, Well Manicured Man, and Alex Krychek. I miss the tense plots, the scary monsters, and the Mulder's dry humor. I even miss the cold, wet mists of their locations. hide show

I watched The X-Files from the very beginning. It was amazing! Nothing like it at the time. Too bad we don't have quality shows like this anymore. Instead, we have bull**** "reality", dance, and singing shows. Great shows like The Eleventh Hour, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Invasion - just to name a few - are thrown out without a second thought. As for seasons being so short or broken in half, oh please! They were once longer than 20 episodes per season. TV rots which is why I started reading again and listen to Pandora Internet radio instead. Thanks network executives for making it so easy to leave the TV off now.

I absolutely LOVE this show =) hide show

Before X files (which I just got hooked into this past year) my favorite TV series was definitely Angel--which I preferred over Buffy due to its darker overtone and more in-depth plots. To me, Angel was the embodiment of good television, with its gritty themes and profound, intensive study of the human mind, conscience, and soul. It left its viewers asking questions, craving more, and ultimately contemplating the more meaningful aspects of our lives. I couldn't imagine a more stimulating series--until I watched the X files, that is! X files possesses a brilliant, engaging story that is sure to impress any science fiction fan, wonderful MOTW story plots that almost never got old, and a much more practical, thorough exploration into the essence of the good and evil that so defines the character of man. The relationship between Scully and Mulder was simply beautiful, and remained believable throughout the series. I have to admit, when I first went to watch this show, I was expecting at best a mediocre horror series involving aliens and a pair of nutty feds that did little more than chase flying saucers and little green men around in their spare time. While not every episode is gold, X files really is one of the best shows around, defined by the quality of its characters, story lines, and amazing originality.
