Johnny did not have any guests on his last show. There were an estimated 50 million people watching a highlight show with Johnny commenting on some of his favorite memories. As the show closed he sat alone on a stool in the middle of the stage and said, "And so it has come to this. I am one of the lucky people in the world. I found something that I always wanted to do and I have enjoyed every single minute of it. I bid you a very heartfelt goodnight."
As Johnny's retirement got closer he tried to avoid too much sentimentality. He would occasionally show past clips of some of his favorite guests as he was talking to them for the last time. Nobody was prepared for Carson's next-to-last night that included his final guests, Robin Williams and Bette Midler. Williams was on his game with his trademark craziness. Midler on the other hand found the heart of the moment. She sat next to Johnny singing One for My Baby (and One More for the Road) to him. Carson became unexpectedly emotional, and the scene of the two of them was caught from a unique camera shot from across the stage.
