Tonya was born July 12, 1967 in London, England. She is an only child. Her parents, both Jamaican, moved back to Jamaica with Tonya when she was one years old. Tonya began ballet when she was only three. After her parents separated, Tonya and her mother returned to England when she was five and settled in Birmingham for 7 years. When she was 12, Tonya and her mother moved to Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.
She won a Miss Junior personality contest when she was 14 and she was bitten with the show biz bug from then on. She took a modeling course at age 16 and joined a modeling agency soon after. Her first television commercial was for milk and she soon landed more commercials and modeling jobs. She was crowned "Miss Black Ontario" in 1977 when she was 18. Tonya attended Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario, studying theatre. She landed a few small television roles in Canada and worked in theatre for a few years.
Tonya moved to Hollywood in 1987, in search of a major acting role.
Tonya is best known for her role as Dr. Olivia Hastings on the CBS daytime drama "The Young and the Restless". She has been with the show since 1990. She received two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a daytime drama series, once in 1996 and again in 2000.
