As the first television drama series about the Vietnam War, Tour of Duty focuses on a single platoon of young U.S. soldiers through their one-year tour of combat duty in Vietnam during the late 1960's. While their own country is rocked by a massive anti-war movement, these young men find themselves thrown into combat in Southeast Asia, where they face enemy troops they can not see and sometimes can not kill. They also face their own fears, as they struggle in a hostile environment just to keep themselves and their fellow soldiers alive.

Terence Knox, Kevin Conroy, Stephen Caffrey, Joshua Maurer, Steve Akahoshi, Tony Becker, Eric Bruskotter, Stan Foster, Ramon Franco and Miguel A. Nunez, Jr. star as the infantrymen who represent diverse racial, cultural and philosophical backgrounds but must ultimately depend on one another to get through the war alive.

Tour of Duty takes place in 1967, when the war in Vietnam has escalated to terrifying heights. Four hundred seventy-five thousand U.S. troops are stationed in South Vietnam. Like most fighting units "in country," Company B is a diverse mixture of young men, mostly teenagers, from across the United States. Its base is a remote firecamp, composed of sandbagged bunkers and surrounded by mine fields and the scorched remains of once-lush forests. The enemy they encounter is the well-trained and well-supplied regulars of the North Vietnamese Army.

Company B's driving force is Sgt. Zeke Anderson (Knox), an amiable and popular sergeant, already on his third tour of duty in Vietnam and determined to keep himself and his men alive. He shares a mutual respect with Capt. Rusty Wallace (Conroy), the company commander and a patient leader, tolerant of the young soldiers for whom he is responsible. Lt. Myron Goldman (Caffrey) is a newly arrived officer, anxious to assert leadership despite his inexperience. Others are Pri. Roger Horn (Maurer), "Doc" Randy Matsuda (Akahoshi), Cpl. Danny Percell (Becker), Pri. Alberto Ruiz (Franco) and Pri. Marcus Taylor (Nunez).

Tour of Duty goes beyond the massive political turmoil caused by the Vietnam War and attempts to portray the human side of the conflict. Nearly three million American servicemen were sent overseas, and more than 57,000 of them never came back. It is only recently that Americans look anew at the war and remember the men of all races and backgrounds who served there at such tremendous personal sacrifice.

In the UK the series was shown regionally on the ITV network, differing nights at times between 11:30pm and 1:30am.less «

  Well now there is 2 for the best viet nam series ever i loved this show more than life its self and hid under my bed sheets for 3 years when it finished now in the uk its on FX but its not the same and i never watch it if i knew when they started it from season 1 episode 1 then id watch it as it was truely fantastic and at times i even had a tear in my eye gotta go im welling up already The G.F.Pless «

  does anyone know how come this show came out in two versions. one version, the title was "tour of duty" and the 2nd version it was called "bravo company" it's exactly the same show but came out with different titles. i've been wondering about this for years.

  Tour of Duty came out while I was in Japan but fortunately for me it was released on video there and I was able to watch it.  (It attracted my attention because it starred Terrence Knox of St. Elsewhere.)  I often used a couple specific episodes in teaching English at university level in and around Nagoya, where I lived and was employed, but once I used it not so much to teach but as a kind of revenge, and at a junior high school at that. I worked at the best university and best high school in Nagoya, a few other universities of varying quality, and the worst junior high school, probably in the world.  I saw teachers come to class drunk.  The students, all boys, had a habit of drawing genitalia on the walls and desks.  To call them rowdy would be to give you a falsely positive impression of them.  These were tough kids to teach!  (It's hard to teach people who are throwing desks at each other and pulling down their trousers in response to simple questions.) SPOILER coming, in case they ever show it.... One day I brought in a copy of the episode of Tour of Duty in which the company finds a dying mother giving birth to an infant.  It ends badly; after everyone becomes quite fond of the kid, the little guy dies in battle.  All of our heroes are wounded and the show ends with them sitting in a helicopter that's carrying them to relative safety, all holding hands, and the Sergeant hlding hands with the dead baby.  A tearjerker to be sure! My bad boys were bawling their eyes out. I was SO gratified!  Maybe they're human after all. g less «

  One of the best and least well know series it has ever been my pleasure to stumble across hide « show »

  I have just dusted off my collection of dvd's of this show and now i remember why i love it so much.
  
  The characters are all well written and develop through out the series to become very real people, with all the strengths and weaknesses you would expect to see, and by the end of series one, you will feel like you know each of the main characters.
  
  This programme does not shy away from the horrors and atrocitiesof war. And while it tells the stories of a group of young Americans, it doesn't always portray them as the heros. If you want to see a gritty, thought provoking drama, then this is definately the one for you.

  Who said you can't find anything good by channel surfing? I came about this wonderful show at 4 PM on TNT one day. This has to be one of the best war TV shows ever made and would make a very interesting movie plot. I liked that the war aspect wasn't over-dramatized like other Vietnam movies tend to be with basically cursing and drug use...and sometimes plots that are unrealistic and make no sense. This show had some good acting and a really good plot. You were made to feel for the characters which I think is very hard in the war genre. Overall, the plot was a little hard to follow at times but it was very dramatic and enjoyable.

  I loved this show. At least until the "China Beach" era. Really wish the writers would have stuck with what worked in the first season and a half. I have to throw in a "Jericho" reference, both were(are) shows that stepped outside the box of traditional programming at the time and delivered quality television. The first half of Tour was as good a television series as I have ever watched. The characters were deleveloped perfectly and it was easy to understand the seriousness of the situations they encountered(at least as much as someone who wasn't there could). Even when new characteres were introduced they were worked into the "feel of things" perfectly and became part of the cast and never seemed out of place.

  Platoon was one of the best movie ever made. This show almost resembles that movie, but instead of just 2 hours, it goes on as a tv series. each episode is written well, maybe this show is a fictional story about vietnam, it's a well made show that feels edgy. Each week you worry about someone in the platoon getting killed, and sometimes someone do die in it. Maybe because the actor is leaving the show or something. It's one of the best shows from CBS, I really like the theme music. This show reflects the 60s. it's not boring, it's a very interesting show to watch.

  One of the best shows i have ever seen. hide « show »

  Tour of Duty is supurb, very realistic showing many of the issues brought up in Vietnam and shows the brutal situations those men found themselves in. With a great cast from an very experienced Sgt. Anderson leading the charge in the bush, breaking in a green lieutenant who develops very well over the series, along with all the other "grunts". It shows corruption, greed, traitors, racial issues, civilian massacres, protesters, drug addictions, suicide, and many other issues. And then the ending arc showing solidiers trying to adjust to civilian life back in the world with some doing better than others, some having flashbacks, mental dilusions and peoples negitive reactions.
  
  Overall, great cast + great story = great series.
