Welcome to the Truth or Consequences guide at TV.com.

Truth or Consequences began on radio in 1940 with host and creator Ralph Edwards. The radio game show had outrageous and often messy stunts, surprise reunions (which was a staple of Edwards' other show This Is Your Life) & home contests.

In 1950, the city of Hot Springs, New Mexico was changed to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico in honor of the radio game show's 10th anniversary. It also marked the show's regular television debut, with Ralph Edwards hosting, from 1950-51. This run picked up a 1951 Emmy Award for "Best Games and Audience Participation Show".

However, this was not the television debut of Truth or Consequences. When the FCC approved commecial TV broadcasting beginning on July 1, 1941, T or C was the first commercial show aired on NBC (WNBT) in New York.

The series returned to primetime in 1954 with Jack Bailey hosting this second version of the series through September 1956. The series resurfaced on NBC from December 1957-June 1958 with Steve Dunne as host.

On New Year's Eve 1956, T or C came to NBC daytime. Ralph Edwards discovered a new voice who would become a television icon. Bob Barker was the new host chosen by Ralph Edwards, who had heard him hosting an audience participation show on Los Angeles radio. Bob's duties ran a total of 18 years, from 1956-65 (NBC daytime) & 1966-75 (syndication). In the syndicated years, he also did a couple of other game shows on the side: The Family Game (Chuck Barris' ABC game in 1968) & (of course) The Price Is Right.

T or C came back briefly in 1977-1978 with Bob Hilton hosting. In 1987-1988 Larry Anderson (Life With Lucy) hosted a final revised version. A total of sixty episodes were taped for this run, although it didn't air more than a few weeks in many markets.
