I've heard about this tagging thing that started, you get "tagged", you have to post 7 facts about yourself, and you "tag" three other people. I want to know. who started this, why, if I get anything for it, and if I have to post the facts and tag on, and if so, what happens if I don't.

sounds to me like its just a silly forum game. You don't have to do anything if you are "tagged" if you don't want to.

This should be reported. It's considered spamming from what I heard.

The Tag option is on your blog, so if people use it how can they get in trouble since its on there? if its against the rules why did they add that as a feature? I haven't been tagged, and  I'm just wondering.

Edit: I understand it now it has nothing to do with the tag option on your blogs.

If you get tagged you have one of two options I guess you can tell the everyone 7 things abour yourself or you can ignore the message you are sent.  It is your choice.  This is simply a fun way for users to get to know one another.

Is it spam...I don't see me telling you 7 random things about myself, in my blog, is spam.  How is it any different from me just telling you things about myself with out using the word tag?  Now if was littering up the forums...sure.  You don't have to read my blog and you don't have to respond to the PM.

I guess we are gonna have to wait for an official word to know for sure...it is just a matter of time now...

And I went looking and found this:  Tv.com defines SPAM as the following...

    What is spam?

Spam is anything that increases the post count, but doesn't add anything to the discussion.

Posts that fall under spam are:

    - Topics that have been addressed recently (still on the first two pages)

    - Topics mentioned in sticky and "Official" threads

    - Replies that only include a quote of someone's earlier response (boxed quotes)

    - Replies that excessively quote others' earlier responses, typically more than 3-4 quote-backs.

    - Replies with only a smiley face or a single word/character response, or a repetition of same

    - Replies that only contain an image in them

    - Replies that consist of an overly large image, or otherwise contain text that disrupts the flow and readability of the page

    - Replies that violate or perpetuate anything determined as "no-topic" above.

Now obviously this happens a lot and we don't always erase them all. However, if the post disappears and is replaced by a "Deleted by moderator message" and/or you receive a moderation PM, consider this your warning. All forums are for promoting discussions, not simply generating high post counts.

I don't see how me posting 7 facts about myself can be spam.

Its a little silly, but there is no way I can figure this is spamming compared to a TON of blogs on TV.com ("I'm bored", "I hate my teacher", "I got an emblem", "I can't stand lunch at my school", "Its snowing").

All the warnings about spamming seem to be coming from blogs of users who don't understand spam. There has been no staff announcement to stop it, just rumors that were probably started by people who were banned at about the same time they posted some things about themselves. Even it it was decided to be harmful, the idea someone would be banned or suspended for participating in it once makes about as much sense as all the people who are banned "even though they never did anything" (yet they mysteriously) have a list of 20 warnings from staff anyway). Its not even sending someone an unwanted PM, its just naming a person in a blog, and if that person is reading your blog, they can choose to participate by making a blog or not. Actually the PM warnings that its "illegal" are closer to real spam.

Not even any evil chain letter consequences...

So you could be moderated if you still have this. Most of my friends have deleted it which is good news. Some haven't done so. I'll let them know. Thanks

First of all, its not a chain letter, its making a blog about yourself and asking others who read your blog to do the same. There is no threat of punishment for not doing it. Where is the staff warning or the threat of banning users from TV.com? The rumors that the "mods" are coming is just as much spam as the silly game itself.

I would say since there was a thread direction to this from the Mods, I really think they need to make an official announcement that it is either acceptable of not, (Which I have no doubt that it is acceptable). Because until you do you are gonna have people still going around and telling people "Delete this before you get a warning from the mods!!!"

So there is still no official word here, even though in the Ask the mods forum there's a link to this place.

Here is just what I think:
    1. People post personal things about their lives every day.
    2. When I tell three of my friends (people who really are my friends, not just by the tv.com definition), that I had fun thinking of seven things to share and they might want to try it as well - how can that be spam? They are my friends and I send them PMs at least once a month and if they wouldn't like it, they just would tell me and ignore it.

NOBODY IS FORCED TO DO ANYTHING!!

Spam is when you send out mass PMs, to people you don't even know and they might be really bothered by it. I think that when you send out these three PMs you send it to people who would like to be part of this. You do not send it to random people!

Now how can something that increases the community factor on this site drastically be Spam? Honestly I don't see that!

    When:
    a) People get PMs from people they don't even know
    b) Start to insult people who do not fallow their invitation
    c) violate any other ToS rule with their Blog

then I would understand that it is Spam.
I also would understand if this would be the only PMs sent around here and that would be a problem, but that's simply can't be the case! I get like 30 PMs every day (including submission notifications) and send out at least 5, because people have asked me for help or I ask them. This doesn't increases my PM traffic in any way.

Also it isn't really a chain letter, since a chain letter you just send out to everyone else. This time you search for three people you think of they actually might want to get that PM and you write them one!

In my personal e-Mail accounts what is Spam?
Some advertisement and other randomly sent stuff I don't know of and I don't want. Invitations to websites by friends can be annoying, but they simply are not Spam! Spam is random, this is a conversation with your friends! I mean would you go out to the Spam report agency of your government and report your friend, your real life friend, just because he sent you an invitation to some website? No you don't!! You either ignore it or tell him, not to bother you again.

If this kind of personal activity is really not wanted anymore on this site, two things should be done:
    1. Remove the Blog function
    2. Remove the PM function

I can not think of any way how this can be considered as Spam. I really wish to hear an official answer with a detailed explanation, why this is a ToS violation. I can't see one. Maybe I'm stupid, so explain it to me.

I'm not sure what you mean about "thread direction". Is there a thread talking about this from the mods on TV.com? As near as I can figure, some Gamspot blogs and some talk about chain letters (probably spam like PMs) from the past are the basis for all these warnings about moderation and deletion.

I have a feeling the whole rumor about it being a violation comes from somebody who once got modded for sending a lot of junk PMs around and they just told some friends that they will get punished for doing something that's not nearly as juvenile.

Goes off to read some blog about how "I'm bored" and the 122 responses that say, "yeah, me too, and my parents are lame"...those aren't spam.

There's a link to this place in this topic here

I do not see how that answers the question, so I think the link is a bit out of place, but I fallowed it and posted my thoughts here.

Yeah, I just found it myself. Thanks.

This has been an interesting example of how rumor spreads and changes people's actions, anyway.

Though I "might" think about reporting any more unwanted personal messages spreading the rumor that I could be banned as "spam", LOL...

Frankly the 3 PMs in my Inbox that say "delete your blog or else" is more spam than the actual blog.  Oh and the 'spam' now existing in my blog regarding me getting banned.

Request has been sent to the Moderators to try to give a clear yes or no on that to resolve the issue once and for all.

    Just seen this:

    LOL!

I just read a blog that said this thread confirms that anyone who participated in saying seven things about themselves and nominating three other friends in their blogs will be moderated or banned unless they delete immediately.

Any wonder how rumors turn to facts?

I believe the mods would even delete the blogs even though it doesn't violate anything (and that's what they do!)
