Should there be a "bookspot" (a site devoted to books)?

    I know this isn't really a suggestion for an addition to TV.com but I can't think of any other place to put it.

    MP3.com is for music, TV.com is for TV, Filmspot is for movies, Gamespot is for games, why not make it complete start a bookspot.com or something similar.

    Personally I love to read, I would be editor of at least 30 book guides within the first month of the theoretical bookspot.com opening.

    Maybe if they put out a poll asking who would want it, then they could get an idea of whether it would be popular or not.

    Editing the topic would surely create the poll.

    I think that it is sad that you believe that.  Booksa are still going very strong.  I, for one, love to read, and would love to see a 'bookspot.com' or equivalent site.

    I always thought that this idea would be good, and who knows, maybe it would encourage people to read...

    Thanks for the idea, I created the poll. Please vote, maybe we'll convince the powers that be.

    I'll tell you why there is not a Bookspot:

    GameSpot.com= Video Games (Electronic)

    MP3.com= Music (Electronic)

    TV.com= Television (Electronic)

    FilmSpot.com= Movies (Electronic)

    BookSpot.com= Books (Not Electronic)

    All of these sites (and many more) are owned by CNET Networks Entertainment, which is a division of CNET. CNET is a site about technology, so why would a technology site feature books? See CNET here: http://www.cnet.com

    I would be curious to know the opinion of the TV.com staff. Is it just me or do the TV.com staff not post as much as they used to? I'm sure if this idea was popular enough it would be done, after all usually companies want to give there customers (or in this case members) what they want.

    The big problem is that you are allowed to publish details like writer, publisher and a short summary (the one printed on the back of the book), but not really its content. You could quote a few lines, but even that is problematic when you don't do that in your own text. It's basically the same as with the lyrics of songs - you are not allowed to post or publish them due copyright law. So I ask what do you want on such a site? Author, publisher, some user reviews and the copied book summary?
    All that you can get on every book-shop site and often also on library's catalogue websites.

    you couldn't reprint much of the actual book, but a site like what we're talking about would be more focused on discussions, reviews, and recommendations, none of which are prohibited under the copyright laws. But I think the main problem with this kind of site would be the sheer number of books that are being published. There's just no way that one website could cover all of those books, unless they only focused on the most popular/famous books, or else split up into a number of different sites for each genre (romance, fantasy, mystery, etc.). It would require a huge amount of planning and effort, and it probably wouldn't get much traffic, since most people who read books for fun tend to not spend a lot of time on the internet, and vice-versa.

    While I agree that discussion would be great, I don't agree that eahc genre would need it's own site, it would simply work like TV.com where your message boards would have a discussion for the specific genres and each book page would have a forum for discussion. The books added would be based on requests of users just like here at TV.com so if the book wasn't popular enough that anyone submitted a request it wouldn't appear in the database.

    As a guy who works in a book store for his bread and butter, I would love to see this implemented. I would love to have a place online where I can go and talk about books in general rather than having to find a fan site which usually aren't very large for a particular book.
