This apparently was just implemented. It is highly annoying, doesn't provide much useful function, and there seems to be no way to get rid of it.
Please add useful features and stop adding this junk that nobody wants or needs!!! Edit -- what is this?! Has the site been hacked or something. I keep seeing messages such as "wth" and "OMG this feature is totally awesome or whatever," attributed to somebody called capsizedsailor. This is not cool. |

It really slows down the scroll keys on my laptop too...
As to what's on the scroll, I figure its just a live test of the feature, not anything real yet. |

capziedsailor has the TV.com staff member logo on his profile. A rogue member of the data team? A disgruntled employee? Or just a hacker?

I haven't seen something that annoying around here in a very, very long time!
And worst, I don't even got most what's up there. For example: "wth man" - capsizedsailor Heh? And once again we see a feature added, distracting us users from submitting and do not get the feature we all are waiting for: the second airdate field on guides to solve the most resent problem. |

I think probably a tech staff person who is testing the feature with nonsense. I'm sure if it's implemented we'll be treated to all the celebrity trash news fit to crawl... |

If this is a real new feature to be added and not just some sort of sick joke, then I say we complain loud and longly until it's gotten rid of. And I think we know exactly who to direct the complaints to.

I'm not really surprised that features like this are added. Ads and sponsored videos are crammmed onto pages all the time. CNET employs teams of people just to do this. There are whole departments of marketing, sales, corporate relations, and tech staff whose job is to do this. They all earn salaries and benefits in an expensive city like San Francisco.
This is not TVTome with an administrator/founder and volunteers with Google ads to diffray hosting costs. I DO wish they would be more careful, not add everything to every page and recognize that page loads on this site are VERY intensive and might drive some visitors away. |

Indeed. I just realized that this nifty feature has boosted my Firefox (latest version, under WinVista 64bit Ultimate) from 1% to 12% while I do cast. That with peaks of over 70% when the five items reload. I'm sorry, but this thing really just is a sick joke in my eyes. I mean no disrespect, but I feel disrespected as this is implemented and not the feature we wanted! |

I honestly didn't know what the new banner was saying until I read this thread. (I guess that three years of ignoring on-screen junk have now paid off.) But it is really distracting. My eye is constantly drawn to the top right hand corner of the page when a new item appears. (Again, this comes from being conditioned to respond to new PMs and Queue items in that area.) It sucks. But so does all the on-screen garbage. It's where the money is, and that's why the "limited resources" are always working on aesthetics and adverts and cannot initiate the most rudimentary of fixes to errors created by the self-same developers when they were allowed to spend a few days working on the submissions side last year. It would be foolish to suggest that the development team start giving some thought to fixing the many outstanding bugs and desirable submission features that the site has so desperately needed for so long. I guess we have not quite reached tipping point: where the page takes so long to load that we give up submitting, and where we have more advertising than information on a page, leading to a slide in visitor numbers and a drop-off in revenues. They've missed a trick, though… I only see the banner when I first open a page. What they really need is one of those floating headers, that will stay in screen when you slide down the page… |

Sorry guys, this was an unfortunate mix-up, and we're looking into it now. Rest assured, though, that this is NOT a new feature we are implementing. Sorry for all the inconvenience it's causing!

I'm jogging my memory here but didn't something like this show up last year around this time...?

Thank you very much, Jaxie. And thank goodness it's gone. May it never return!
mari -- I think I know what you're referring to, but that wasn't nearly as annoying as this was. Though, yeah, that was a pain in the neck too. |

Well, I missed it, but my first thought when I read about it was what mari said. I thought it was like that scrolling marquee they had where users could submit stuff. If I remember correctly, that was part of one of the chat events.
