The Fairly Odd Parents Avg Score: 8.75 Total Ratings: 3365 Total Reviews: 492 Users who agree: 1 |
I used to enjoy watching Fairly Odd Parents more than I do these days. The earlier episodes -- including the Oh Yeah! Cartoons ones -- were the best, and the characters were in-character.
Not very long after FOP became a show of its own, however, its magic began to slowly fade away, only to be replaced by repetitious displays of cats coughing up hairballs, an idiotic dad that makes Homer Simpson look like Carl Winslow, a jerkish Timmy Turner who acts like Bart Simpson, and WAY too many crude jokes used at once, both visual and verbal. The worst part of this is, I recall reading on Butch Hartman's Web site about a promise he made. Well, guess what it was. He said that as much as he enjoyed watching "The Simpsons", he'd never make FOP like that. But, alas, he did. Now, it's mostly about bathroom humor, Cosmo and Wanda thinking about cheating on each other, Timmy's dad or Cosmo acting/screaming/singing/talking like a girl...and the list goes on.
Despite cameos from top-rated actors like Ben Stein, Norm McDonald, and Tony Sirico, most of the time we see humor as fresh as a rock-hard bread roll.
Call me crazy, or call me paranoid. But, I have been watching Nickelodeon since I was six years old (I'm 22 these days), and never in my life have I seen anything this repulsive since "Ren & Stimpy".
ApacheMan2K gives the Fairly OddParents a well-deserved 3.8/10. Now, you see the integrity -- POOF! -- now, you don't.

SpongeBob SquarePants Avg Score: 8.64 Total Ratings: 5898 Total Reviews: 1093 Users who disagree: 2 |
When I was 14 years old, it wasn't long before I started watching this once-enjoyable show, SpongeBob Squarepants. Just about every episode I saw cracked me up like a pecan, and some of them had a villain I just like to watch: Plankton! Might I add that he is fun to mimic?
Three seasons or so, however, I started to lose interest in the show. Despite newer stuff popping into newer episodes, I noticed a few flaws that are driving me off.
First, there's the animation. It looked just fine in pen-and-ink! Yet, when they started using computers, it all looked okay. At first, that is. Further into the series, the animation got worse and worse, and soon enough, most of the characters look more like they were rendered out by a second-grade elementary class.
On top of that, there has been a number of episodes with SpongeBob really getting out of character. He may be wimpy and child-like on the inside, but he certainly is not feminine in any way! He said so in earlier episodes ("I is 100% M-Male"). Every time he and Patrick are with each other, I start to get paranoid, hoping they won't hug, hold hands, or kiss. Heck, even Mr. Krabs seems to be getting into that trend, wearing a "foxy" necklace in one episode, and holding curlers in another. Tell you the truth, it makes me nervous/nauseous. I don't know about crabs, though Mr. Hillenburg did say sponges are asexual. But, you know something? He's obviously confused reality with his own "nautical nonsense". I sigh in angst, anguish, and disgust.
Anyway, SpongeBob is to the point where I'll just watch the earlier episodes, only because they look better and are more decent.
Some of the music may be recycled, but at least they fit the show. There are some originals, too, though they aren't heard as much. Songs are a primary example.
ApacheMan2K gives Nickelodeon's yellow sea sponge's show 5/10. Nautical nonsense, huh?

The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius Avg Score: 8.54 Total Ratings: 2074 Total Reviews: 328 |
Jimmy Neutron started out as a character created by John A. Davis, originally called Johnny Quasar. About five or six years later, he was renamed Jimmy Neutron. And, he starred in his own movie, which premiered right before Christmas in 2001.
A few months pass, and Nickelodeon saw how successful the movie was. So, they decided to create a TV series based on that movie. From the brilliant minds of John A. Davis and Steve Oedekerk (the man behind timeless movies like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Patch Adams, Thumb Wars, and Barnyard) came "The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron", which was brought to TV in the fall of 2002.
Many episodes are filled with pop culture references, and some have clever jokes on popular movies such as "The Wizard of Oz" and "Rocky". There are even hour-long specials that are either inspired by or parody other movies, like the James Bond series, "Gremlins", and "The Empire Strikes Back".
Jimmy Neutron also has plenty of characters that really grow on you. My particular favorite is Sheen Estevez, Jimmy's hyperactive friend who is totally obsessed with his superhero idol, Ultra Lord. I even have a favorite villain: Professor Finbarr Calamitous (brilliantly voiced by Tim Curry), the mad scientist who could never finish anything.
But, lately I noticed one flaw in the later episodes. Is it just me, or has Carl Wheezer become more...girlish? You probably think I'm crazy, but I think that's kinda creepy.
Anyway, the animation is solid and does an excellent job in communicating the premise of each episode. The dialogue is witty and clever, and the music is sometimes catchy.
ApacheMan2K gives "The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron", 9.5/10. Well, gotta blast!

Brandy & Mr. Whiskers Avg Score: 7.74 Total Ratings: 491 Total Reviews: 99 |
To me, Brandy & Mr. Whiskers is the kind of show you don't see at this day and age -- one that does not go overboard with crude humor (like Fairly OddParents); one that does not give subtle hints of certain things I shouldn't bring up (as do further episodes of SpongeBob Squarepants); and, one that doesn't use too many dumb jokes (like Ned's Declassified).
Being a video gamer, I've seen plenty of stuff as weird as what you'd see in Brandy & Mr. Whiskers, particularly the WarioWare games. So, when I see the zany humor, it often makes me think of either WarioWare or even EarthBound. There are some weird moments, but there are others that are so funny, they're priceless.
Whiskers is especially a funny guy, with his dimwitted but loveable intellect, his overly dramatic personality, and sometimes, even his, er, poor hygiene.
Brandy may be a cute puppy dog, but she's also the classic example of the likes of Paris Hilton (as the Wikipedia article suggests). Sometimes, she can be manipulative, "hyperconscious of her appearance", and stubborn. But, she does have a nicer side; she especially has a sort of fraternal bond with Mr. Whiskers. And, she's friends with Lola Boa, Meryl & Sheryl, and Margo (although Margo wouldn't admit it, I think).
The animation isn't always top-notch, but it does display "Brandy & Mr. Whiskers"' zaniness almost accurately. Plus, there are various photo cues -- some of which are eyebrow-archers or eye-poppers, and others are funny-bone ticklers -- that emphasize or deliver the punch line.
Overall, Am2K gives "Brandy & Mr. Whiskers" a 9.5/10. Message for Disney: do us fans a favor and extend the series, if, in any way, possible.
