Say WHAT?
Hey y'all,
I just got home from Kung Fu Panda. (Awesome movie, I strongly advise whoever's reading this to go out and see it) And during the previews, one particularly struck me.
Case in point?
Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Now, don't get me wrong. That's not to say I don't like Star Wars, by any means; on the contrary, I like the original trilogy and the last one was not bad.
What I don't like, however, is the Clone Wars animated series. Some films, comics, etc. lend themselves well to being made into cartoons. This is not such a case.
Before people jump down my throat for this, again, I don't dislike Star Wars. However, when you look at the first two, and then compare them to the original trilogy, it could be argued that they are by far the worst in the series.
Anyway, the Clone Wars cartoon seemed wrong to begin with. Have you looked at the animation style? I dunno bout y'all, but I'm no fan; these characters do not lend themselves well to being turned into cartoons.
And this completely CGI'd one? Whilst I'm sure it'll rack up big bucks at the box office - just as all its predecessors did - it just doesn't seem...gah, it just isn't right.
Agree? Disagree?
Feel free to comment.
HP, Hypocritical Part
By now, many will have heard of the lawsuit going on between JK Rowling and RDR Books. And here's what I've to say on it all.
HYPOCRISY!!!!!
JK Rowling is suing RDR Books over their recent attempt to publish Harry Potter Lexicon, claiming they're "her ideas" and that "no one should write about hers." At the same time, however, something she has acknowledged, but many fail to: Rowling herself has cited many inspirational works to Harry Potter, and some have not been acknowledged.
Primary case in point is The Worst Witch, a novel by Jill Murphy published in 1974. It features Mildred Hubble, a clumsy witch who goes to a school called Miss Cackle's. I've read the book; the descriptions of Hogwarts in Rowling's HP novels are remarkably similar, and chapter 6 of TWW even mentions a character called The Chief Magician, described as "very old, with a white long beard and a purple gown embroidered with moons and stars." The edition I read even includes an illustration, which bears striking similarities to Dumbledore.
AND certain elements of Harry Potter are a lot like Lord of the Rings. Rowling supposedly didn't read the actual trilogy until she was a teen, but the similarities are there, if you want to believe it.
And how does all this tie in to hypocrisy?
Why, Rowling sues a publisher for attempting to publish what she claims are "her" ideas, which may not be entirely hers in themselves!
Anyone got any comments?
Bad Editing, courtesy of Toonzone
Of late, I've been checking out certain sections of Toonzone's hosted sites. Today's example? The X-Men: The Animated Series page. And something needs addressing.
Ever notice that when you read the episode reviews, some of the airdates are horribly inaccurate? One episode, aired in the 93-4 season, is listed as having aired in 1997, while the premiere of the second season is listed as having aired well before it truly did. Hasty editing, methinks, and that suspicion is furthered by the fact that their The Batman guide does not have nearly as many incorrect airdates. Lazy editing for certain shows, methinks...
I've just brought this up in the forums, and while I'm sure it's gonna get me banned (surprisingly, attacking the mods over a user's unjust ban didn't), I just had to put it down, since no show deserves to have so many off dates in its guide and not have anyone bother to mention it.
Unjustly Banned
Y'know my last entry, about being unable to sign in to TZ? Well, after waiting a few months, I managed to rejoin, and this time didn't lose my password (and I guarantee, if you lose your password, the mods will NOT send it, no matter how many times they claim they have).
Well, anyway...over the last couple of days, on the Superman: Doomsday talkback thread, one user by the name of Tempest expressed his views on the film's flaws as a rant. He was in term bashed for it in a response which, ironically, discussed freedom of expression, I since stuck up for him, and next to his name, it now states that he is banned. I have just attacked the mods over his unjust ban, and I'm sure I'll get it for doing so...but that'll just serve to harm TZ's reputation they still haven't fully mended.
Toonzone.net: Access Denied
Ah yes, Toonzone.net.
This is a tale of something that no user trying to sign in should have to suffer.
Looking at Toonzone's forums, I one day decided I'd try and join, to see what all I could strike up, and how far I could go before they kicked me out. I submitted my username and password, and then waited the time before I should have been able to post, then I tried to login, and forgot my password. I used the "forgot your password" function, which then proclaims they've sent you an e-mail with your password - many times, in fact - and they never wrote back. I even contacted an administrator, but they still never wrote back. And when I try to use the code to get in now, it says I'm a nonexistent user. Tried using another alias? Didn't work.
Yeesh, Toonzone, if you're claiming you can help users who've forgotten their passwords log in, you might as well do it, rather than just have a message claiming you've sent it, and then nothing.
Yeesh.

Family Guy Avg Score: 9.14 Total Ratings: 28169 Total Reviews: 2472 |
Family Guy, for its first five seasons, was absolutely hilarious, in particular the first two. Season 3 wasn't quite as good, but entertaining nonetheless, and season 4 was a great comeback. True it's freakin' sweet, twisted, sick and has politically incorrect written all over it, but really, that's what's needed from a show like this.
Oh, and many people compare this to The Simpsons, where it is frequently unjustly touted as "bottom of the barrel," "low brow," etc. in addition to being called a rip-off. None of these allegations are true, however, and when set up against this show, The Simpsons' later seasons not only don't look as good, they also pale considerably.
You want my advice regarding this show? Watch FG's first 5 for raw comedy. Season 6 is okay, but not as good as the earlier seasons. Nonetheless, watch this show - it's irreverent, humorous, has an unforgettable cast, and in the end is absolutely fabulous. 9/10

The Simpsons Milhouse of Sand and Fog Avg Score: 8.23 Total Ratings: 247 Total Reviews: 33 |
It becomes clear that Kirk and Luanne Van Houten's marriage isn't working out as planned, ending in divorce. This puts much strain on Milhouse's loyalty to his father vs. that to his mother.
Meanwhile, Homer is terrified by the prospect of his marriage turning out like theirs. He unnecessarily tries to convince Marge that he still loves her, before filing a divorce. Marge is shocked, until Homer reveals he did so in order to make it possible for them to have a second wedding, this one a vast improvement.
Inspired by them, Kirk tries to win Luanne back, and proposes to her for a second time, of course getting a flat no. This was occasionally referenced later in the series, not as it was here, but it still gave Milhouse development.
September 25, 2005. Just under 9 years later.
...they're. Back. Together.
When I saw this, I felt like screaming in annoyance. Their divorce had been significantly realistic in nature, and I thought it was good to see realism in the show. Now, they're back together like nothing even happened. All I have to say is, what the hell were you smoking, writers?!?!

The Simpsons A Milhouse Divided Avg Score: 8.54 Total Ratings: 117 Total Reviews: 10 Users who agree: 1 |
In this tale, Marge invites various friends over. During the dinner party, it becomes clear that Kirk and Luanne Van Houten\'s marriage isn\'t going as planned, and they divorce - creating conflicting loyalties for their son, Milhouse.
Homer is scared by the prospect of his marriage turning out like theirs, and starts trying unnecessarily to convince Marge he still loves her. Eventually, he files for divorce, but so that they can have a second wedding, this far better.
After the wedding, after delivering an absolutely horrible (yet hilarious) song, \"Can I Borrow a Feelin\'?\" Kirk asks Luanne to marry him again, of course getting a flat no.
This episode is a personal favorite, for many reasons. Firstly, this was quite a realistic episode, as it shows that some marriages will simply not work, even though one side may try to reconcile what drove the two apart. It then created what I found to be good character development, providing Milhouse with the troubles of his loyalty to his mother, and to his father.
...as for what became of this, some time later...well, read my review of that episode for my comments.

The Batman Avg Score: 8.19 Total Ratings: 2106 Total Reviews: 207 Users who agree: 3 Users who disagree: 1 |
What I saw, however, blew me away – and not for good reasons.
This new Batman cartoon is nothing like the Batman: TAS show or even its sequel TNBA. It's not even in that show's continuity – which is a good thing, seeing as if the cartoon Batman we know saw this, he'd die of shock – if he hadn't already died laughing at how pathetic this show is. To put it bluntly, here's a description of the show: RUBBISH.
All the villains have been revamped and screwed up in one way or another, Kevin Conroy's powerful voice is nowhere to be heard and the only one of Batman's beloved comrades - Batgirl - looks like some high school dropout going to a comic convention.
Speaking of voices, the likes of Jason Marsden, Ron Perlman and even horror legend Robert Englund's voices are wasted in this show. They were so great in their other roles, but here, they suck.
It's amazing how after we all came to love B:TAS and then TNBA, which had Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, etc. – the producers of WB expect us to put up with this insult to Batman's name. First WB picked up Pokemon; now this? Good night. 3/10

Malcolm in the Middle Reese Joins The Army (2) Avg Score: 8.90 Total Ratings: 41 Total Reviews: 3 Users who disagree: 1 |
This episode: He continues to fight in the army, leading his team to victory. However, being successful soon leads him to Afghanistan - which I doubt is what he had in mind.
Meanwhile, as Malcolm tries to prove Hal innocent of his charge, Lois continues to lose it.
This is a hilarious episode and was an exciting 5th Season finale - even funnier than the first half. Things are in chaos at home, and it isn't much better for Reese, who has just found himself in Afghanistan. It's hilarious to watch Lois losing it, and Malcolm's attempts to prove Hal innocent. It's an extremely well-done episode, and gives a big impression of what's going to happen next season, when Reese comes home. 8.5/10
