Cagney & Lacey Jane Doe #37 Avg Score: 8.85 Total Ratings: 22 Total Reviews: 1 |
Nice, touching, rather poignant, yet funny episode! This show does a wonderful job of balancing the drama with humor and these women are so real and honest and have a special, unbreakable bond between them. I really felt for poor Chris when her flat was trashed; Mary Beth, despite battling a horrid cold and a nasty cough, still managed to be there for a crying Christine.
The disastrous commercial shooting made me laugh so hard! Poor Mary Beth had that cold and her voice was cracking, yet the kept having her re-do the silly commercial. I could tell she was also bothered by the makeup people also. I laughed at her wry comment about she and Chris not being "Charlie's Angel's" type glamour women; it was funny.
The ending was very poignant also; it showed Chris' sensitivity behind that tough steel grittiness of her; it was touching how she wept over the dead homeless women.
It's extremely refreshing to see a show about women who can be tough without sacrificing their humanity and without coming across as cold-hearted. Both Chris and Mary Beth can be tougher than seasoned gang members when they need to be, yet can cry like babies when they need to also.

Roseanne Why Jackie Becomes a Trucker Avg Score: 9.27 Total Ratings: 41 Total Reviews: 4 Users who agree: 1 |
I laughed so hard nonstop from start to finish!!! Jackie's horrified expression at finding out that she slept with Arnie is sooo priceless, esp. when Arnie comes out casually brushing his teeth and smirking at Jackie; I think he was amused at her horror and embarrassment. The scene just cracked me up!!!
Jackie's always funny when she's drunk; I wish they could have shown her being drunk at the Lobo; Jackie knows how to drink herself under the table...or in bed, lol!
The scenes when Roseanne is trying to get Lorraine to come get the dog is funny also; I like how Roseanne doesn't buy any of Lorraine's lame excuses and doesn't fall for Lorraine's nonsense.
I laughed all over again when Jackie's still dreadfully embarrassed when she and Roseanne and their friends get together for tea and coffee and chat. I loved how Jackie just blurts out *I slept with Arnie!* Priceless! It was funny how when the others look at her in surprise, Jackie squirms and stoops under the table and confesses meekly to being drunk.
It was touching and hilarious how Roseanne tells Arnie off for taking advantage of Jackie and orders him to *GET OUUUUT!!!*
I liked the ending, how Roseanne came over to see if Jackie was feeling better and I laughed again at the sight of Jackie spraying and changing her sheets; I could see she was getting rid of the Arnie taint. I think Jackie was still very embarrassed, but was feeling better and it was neat that she decided to be a trucker.
I could tell Roseanne was proud of Jackie, despite being amused at the idea of tiny, skinny, short little Jackie behind the wheels of a big-rig truck.

Loved the show when it was around. The setting of New York City was great also. The rich, original character development of Chris Cagney and Mary Beth Lacey combined with creative, deep, enjoyable, mold-breaking plots to make this show an incredible winner.
It was one of the few shows I watched in high school; I'm glad the first season is on DVD; I hope to order it soon.
I liked how Mary Beth and Chris looked like real women, not over-made-up Barbie dolls like too many women in other TV shows.
I also loved how they generally solved crimes and had adventures of their own without some male rescuing them.
The show also dealt with real issues like abortion, rape, dating violence, sex, guns, family issues and gender issues to name a few.
I also loved their beautiful friendship they had with each other and how they were loyal through thick and thin.
I liked the variety also, especially with Mary Beth being happily married and Chris being happily single.
The women were real and three-dimensional and never relied on stereotypes. This show is the *Roseanne* of the 1980's...Mary Beth was a lot like Roseanne Conner and Chris in some ways reminded me of Jackie Harris, although Chris is more outspoken and has a stronger self-esteem than Jackie.
We need more shows like this one; they need to get on the stick and start producing more *Cagney and Laceys* and *Roseannes*.

Kind of trite and over used...two storylines especially have been overused to the point of being ironed flat...the dead mother plot and the relocating to the country from the city.
In this show, we have both. The mother's dead and there's the widowed daddy with the kids to join the vast army of widowed dads in TV place. As if one more isn't enough.
Then in the same overused plot ripped off from shows like Just the Ten of Us, the family leaves the big "bad" city and moves to nowheresville in the middle of the country...in this case, it's Hawaii.
There's one girl in the family and she turns out the be a drama queen and I remember one time where she actually says something about "understanding the female mind" showcasing herself as a token among her two brothers and dad, which shows that they need more widowed and single mothers in TV place.
None of the characters are very exciting or original, so I can see why the show was eventually cancelled.
Thank Merlin for shows like Roseanne and Cagney and Lacey.

7th Heaven The Best Laid Plans Avg Score: 8.54 Total Ratings: 69 Total Reviews: 5 Users who agree: 1 |
I sometimes watch *Seventh Heaven* to extract a few laughs from it because it's gotten silly lately and I laugh at the ridiculousness of most of the characters.
Ruthie's grown worse and her refusal to apologize to Martin for pulling down his pants at school, then accusing him of lacking a sense of humor (hel-lllo, sexual harrassment here!) is indicative of her deteriorating character.
For the past season or so, she's grown more and more self-centered and is acting more and more like a spoiled brat. I was sooo glad when Martin, then Matt told her off. She needs to grow up and think of others for a change.
Poor Simon...he's really having a tough time. He's struggling for his freedom and independence, especially now that he's in college, but his dad's overbearing, overcontrolling ways threaten to stifle his bids.
The overcontrol is especially pernicious when the Revster butts into Simon's sex life; the Revster and Annie think it's this great heinus sin to have nonmarital sex and try to foist that narrowminded belief on everyone around them.
One character I thought sounded intelligent for a change was Matt Camden; he really did try to give good advice to the Revster and his wife; they were real dodos to ignore Matt and brush him off and go spy on Simon anyway; I just wanted to kick their butt there.
I especially thought the Revster showed an incredible arrogance when he brushed off Matt's advice and Matt as "just a premed student" who "didn't know anything" and stated that just because the Revster was Simon's dad, the Rev knew everything.
I actually snorted and told the Revster out loud that just because you've given birth or planted your sperm in somebody doesn't mean you're the world's expert on the resulting human being. The Revster seriously needs to get over his power and ego trip he's intoxicated with.
It was so, so stupid of Annie and Eric to just "show up" at the dinner Simon and Georgia were planning ALONE and act all cute and order all that expensive food; seldom have I seen middle-aged, professed religious parents behave so childishly.
I was sooo glad when Georgia spoke up and indirectly told the Revster to butt out of their private affairs. I laughed also when Georgia told the Revster about how the church she goes to has attracted many teens that USED to attend the Camden church due to her church being more open-minded and recognizing teen and young adult sexuality.
I really feel for Simon; he showed an extraordinary amount of patience with the Revster's nosiness and immaturity at that dinner.
It was also rotten of the Revster to belittle Simon and assume that he "didn't know anything" about life and I could see that Simon's feelings were really hurt. I was glad to see him and Georgia walk out on his parents.
I do hope Simon soon gets the courage to break away from his sorry excuses of parents or I fear He'll develop an ulcer or have a nervous breakdown.
