F/X: The Series
Avg Score: 7.88    Total Ratings: 86    Total Reviews: 3
This series was a really great show, based off the two F/X movies. Each episode had Rollie Tyler using his skills as a movie effects artist to help solve crimes and bring criminals to justice. It has undertones of things like Mission Impossible, but this can stand on its own rather than leaning on other classics. There's always some new piece of technology, some interesting aspect of the movie biz that helps making the cops jobs a lot simpler in catching the bad guys. Some of the things they do may be a stretch to the imagination, though since the show was made, we have made a number of advancements that bring us pretty much on par with what they can do. Makes you sort of wonder why the cops don't try some of this stuff in real life.

I caught a couple episodes here and there at first and it made me go back and watch the series from the beginning. The characters are richly defined and their play back and forth is what makes the show. The medical diagnosis is always interesting to see how things play out but you spend more time dealing with the relationships between the characters and their actions, with the medical drama playing as a counterpoint, a way to cause the actions people take. In that way, it could be said to be like any other hospital drama, but it is the characters that make the show, especially watching the abrasive House dealing with situations, and how things react around him.

These Gargoyles have quite a series of adventures; enemies more or less on all sides, most of the civilians not sure what to make of them besides 'monsters'. They are alone in this world, and trying to make a living while still being Gargoyles and doing what they do; protecting.

In protecting the city, there are a lot of different types of enemies they run into, ranging from a Gargoyle who wants to destroy all humans, a robotic Gargoyle, a rich scheming human, magical beings and of course what list would be complete without the Illuminati? That's right, the secret society so powerful it's supposed to be ruling the world makes appearances in this show as a 'villian' for the Gargoyle heroes to contend with, or to play off of. Of course, as things progress, they make friends as well, even going so far as to bringing in King Arthur.

The stories are always well-written (especially the first two seasons), and there are pieces being sown all the way back from episode one that gets used all the way in the ending.

While it's not necessary, I would recommend that you do a search for "Ask Greg" where he answers a lot of people's questions about the show, since he had planned this to go on for a lot longer and even had about 5 spinoff shows using the Gargoyles characters and the Gargoyles universe. I personally haven't looked at the comic series since I can't find it in my area, but people also say that is a continuation of the show, so I suggest any true fans looking for it.

This show I have watched since episode number #1, and have never missed an episode. To fully get into the show, into the characters, you really need to see every episode which is good and bad at the same time. Good in the way that it allows there to be deep, well developed stories, but bad that you can't jump in anywhere but the beginning unless you don't mind some confusion.

However, once you start from the beginning, then what you have is a really complex show. It is really character driven, with each episode taking at least one character and giving you something new about them, both from their life before the crash and with their life now. The only issue I have with the show, besides the confusion mentioned above, is that there have been sometimes that a situation would happen for a story purpose and play itself out only to be pushed aside for other story arcs to take off. Or, an event will happen and it will be played down in other episodes, as if it wasn't as important as something else. But that is partly because of the focus being a different 'main' character every episode, things from their lives, so to them, that event just might not mean as much compared to another issue they're dealing with.

Heroes

I'm a big comic book fan, especially of the various super-hero comics. X-Men, Spiderman, Superman, the whole 'few people with special powers' sort of thing, and if you've ever looked at the new Marvel 'Ultimate' series of superheroes, it's their tried and true heroes in the modern world. Which is much like what Heroes is; each of the different people trying to deal with their powers while they have the whole 'save the world' looming over their head.

If you think that judging from that, it is all a serious drama story, while it is serious it keeps from being a 'soap opera' or a story about their powers. The powers are secondary; they are central to the storyline since they are heroes, but the whole show is driven by the characters. Their struggles, their wins and losses as people, not as powerful beings, is what makes it interesting to come back to time and time again.

Also, I recommend recording each episode for the fact that you can let yourself go back and make some connections to previous events. There have been times I have caught myself doing just that as I introduced a friend to the show after I had seen the first handful of episodes.
