7th Heaven Don't Ax, Don't Tell Avg Score: 8.81 Total Ratings: 60 Total Reviews: 8 |
This is a great example of 7th Heaven in its prime. Reverend Camden decides to home school the children after he can't get them moved out of the teacher's class and Lucy knows something is up. Lucy spends the entire day snooping through the house looking for clues as to why her Dad is so out of sorts. Expensive shampoo - no one in the Camden house uses expensive shampoo, opps, except her b/c she has problem hair. This is exactly why I watched 7th Heaven - the nutty Camdens jumping to conclusions, spying on each other, getting up in arms about things they know nothing about, and dragging each other into the mix. I loved Kevin and Lucy in this one. Kevin dropped some of the sanctimonious, condenscending crap he always pulls and actually became a "Camden" - neurotic and nosy! Now we just need some other good characters back and we will be in business. The twins just won't do it - I don't want to be mean but they are really annoying. This may be tough b/c they are hit and miss on recurring roles - For instance I loved when Robbie was on the show but hated almost all the Chandler and that blonde police partner of Kevin episodes.

Big Love Avg Score: 8.75 Total Ratings: 1309 Total Reviews: 68 |
This is perhaps the most disturbing show on television. After watching each episode I just think to myself -what happened to these people to make them think this is okay? First, there is Bill, the husband. He grew up on a creepy compound but was kicked out at 16. The prophet in charge(an evil child molester in his 70's whose youngest wife-in-waiting is barely 16) was threatened by him. He went to college and met first wife, Barb and became monogomous. Three children later, Barb gets cancer, almost dies and can no longer reproduce. Enter Nikki, a daughter of the prophet sent to nurse Barb back to health. Either the idea of having no more children or the scare of losing his only wife makes Bill think "Geez-I need a back-up in case something like that happens again". Nikki becomes his 2nd wife. She grew up on the compound & everytime she talks you want to cringe. You despise her manipulating, back-stabbing jealous actions one minute and then let her off the hook the next - b/c you know she didn't have a chance at growing into a stable human being on that compound. Years later, Margene starts working for Bill. Margene was barely 18 at the time and her and Bill started a romantic relationship. She was never even Mormon before meeting Bill but came from a broken home and had "daddy issues". Somehow Bill convinces the two wives to allow a third addition. The show is fantastic for one reason. You can't stop talking about it w/ the other people who watch it. The characters are just so far removed from anything you'd encounter. The show does a great job of slowly introducing information about the way this family came about. Each week, you learn how desperate Barb must have been to not lose Bill that she would agree to the arrangement. You see her struggle with making the best of their situation & how hard she works to convince herself that she is happy - all while still keeping her children as far away from the really sick parts of polygamy (namely the compound & the child rapists). Barb is the most relatable character but just when you start to relate to her - you end up stopping and thinking - "wait! she is still ALLOWING Nikki's father to molest a 16 year girl her daughter's age! Any normal human being would call the POLICE!" Margene just breaks your heart - she tries so hard to become a good wife and mother but she is constantly playing catch up to the other two wives and after each episode I think "why couldn't Bill have thought with his head and not his weiner- send her to therapy, college, and then fix her up with single man HER AGE". The supporting cast is superb as well. Obviously HBO shows have higher quality actors but this show takes the cake. Bill's mother is perhaps the greatest comic relief and probably strongest woman role. Bill's younger brother is great as the recently married ex-football star who wants to be monogomous but his new wife is very pro-polygamy. This show ropes you in and it will be interesting to see where the storylines goes. A flashback episode would be killer. It is far-fetched at times - like how a polygamous family can go undetected in suburban america but the characters are so engaging that you forget that stuff. HBO comes up with another great hit.

CSI: Miami Avg Score: 8.72 Total Ratings: 8223 Total Reviews: 323 |
This is the only show of the CSI installments that I watch. I can't help it - it is too much fun.
Horatio Caine leads a crack forensic team at a state-of-the-art facility in Miami. The show always starts the same. Murder happens, Caine arrives at the scene, looks at the body, slowly puts on or removes his sunglasses, and makes probably the most ridiculously corny pun/comment - then cue the music. Love it! Every week I wait for his goofy comment. Regardless of how cliche the show can be they pay great attention to detail - probably more so then any other show I watch. The development of Caine is a prime example. In early episodes he is hands on, doing the investigatory work, and in the lastest season he is more of a supervisory figure coming in at important times. There are only two problems I have with his character. The writers commit overkill with the "father figure" aspect of his personality - while he is the great woman protector, it often borderlines on condescending, annoying, and downright creepy. Also, he clearly has never read a little thing called the constitution based on his investigatory tactics.
But they have a wonderful ability to introduce characters in one episode and smoothly reintroduce them in later ones, building on the small information revealed in the past episode. (Caine's brother's mistress, the child molester, the corrupt judge, just to name a few). The writers then connect the old characeter to the new storyline pretty creatively. Also, the supporting cast is fun. Emily Proctor as Calleigh Duquense is probably one of the "coolest" woman law enforcement figure ever on TV. The cast works well together. I love the one episode where Callie and Delko are investigating a rapist-murderer during spring break and the college girls all whistle at Delko when he removes his shirt to go into the pool to get the body & then ask Callie if he is single. The show is definitely ridiculous. Apparently everyone in Miami lives in posh condos or beachfront mansions (even the prostitutes and drug dealers don't have too shabby of digs). But it is interesting, fun, & creative.

CSI: Miami Curse Of The Coffin Avg Score: 8.19 Total Ratings: 166 Total Reviews: 30 Users who disagree: 5 |
This was a great fun halloween episode - halloween episodes are supposed to be light and entertaining and this sure was. I watch CSI-Miami b/c it is a fun and creative show - not b/c it has some great artistic value and this episode delivers. A woman is killed with a golf club and a little coffin is found next to her body - investigation ensues and a goat head among other things shows that she was into santeria. Her ex-husband who previously stole a load of gold bricks with a friend and now has it buried in their burial plots (which they just happen to be fighting over, a new boyfriend, and a disgruntled co-worker are suspects. The actual forensic part of this episode was lacking and so was the ending - you could easily start to piece together the crime but I think the focus of this episode was supposed to be the humor and spooky storyline. Delko and eventually the rest of the team start to get freaked out when odd things start happening to them and the ending is cute- the coffin evidence is missing . . . and shows up under the fleeing murders beach chair. . .

I don't know at what point Lorelai and Rory's self-involvement went from cute to utterly annoying. In this episode Lor likes that Chris told her that his ex changed his ways and now wants to be involved in Gigi's life (unlike shady Luke) but soons changes her mood when Chris wants to send Gigi to Paris to stay w/ her for a few months. Chris gets mad at Lor b/c he believes people can change. Extremely predictable argument and discussion - Lor realizes he is sensitive b/c he was the Sherry of their relationship. Yawn. Then they decide to go to Paris together w/ Gigi - what?
Logan and Rory go to dinner w/ three of his colleagues, one of which(gasp!) happens to be a female. Okay - I understand that Logan is a cad and Bobby was a bit condenscending but when did Rory become such a brat. She started acting like a 11 year old way before she realized Bobby was a bit snooty. I'm sick of Rory turning into a child every time things aren't 100% her way - especially considering she was more mature at 16 then she is now. Granted her blow up at Logan was entertaining but I am really sick of her whining in general.
Good Parts -The end with Rory, Mom and Dad in car was cute as is ALWAYS Richard and Emily scenes (the 5 of them looking and commenting on Emily's mug shot was priceless) And a plus is that this is the first episode of the season where it was not completely apparent that Amy P was no longer writing the show.
