All's Well that Ends Well

Hello everyone,

It is with sadness that I must depart from the Guiding Light guide. These shows, they become a part of us that we will always treasure no matter the path in life we take. I have enjoyed my time editing this guide on two different websites, even if my time watching the show has not been as enjoyable. I've been working on this guide for almost three years and have had the help of many different people. I thank you all for making the guide what it is and hope that the guide can remain as a reminder that soaps, in its purest form, are one of the most enjoyable forms of entertainment. If only those in charge would understand our complaints and would begin to respect these shows, as well as the viewers that have helped to keep said show on the air for so long. Thank you.

Until we meet again,

Oopsy!

Wow. I take a couple days to work a bit on schoolwork and come back to a madhouse around here with missing points, weird and at times almost offensive casting moves on the show, and whatnot. Just wanted to thank Sudser for the continued help over the past few months. Hopefully when I can, part doux of the show informational section could be finished. Oh well. Till next update...

September 11 -- Wow, Does the Time Fly or What?

I'm not going to go into some lengthy diatribe about 9-11. We've heard it before and there's no possibility of forgetting that day. Heck, I even remember where I was when I found out -- in my tenth grade biology class. But anyhow, just a little shout-out to all the law enforcement officials and firefighters out there, as well as those in the armed forces. Thanks for everything!

Comments Needed Por Favor

Hello Everyone!

I have begun changing the Guiding Light introduction and summary. It's not finished yet, as you can tell, but I want comments as to how it is thus far, so I know what to change, add, subtract, etc. I'm hoping that it's not going to be *too* long, but considering I've barely even gotten to the television edition, it's looking like it will be. So if you have any comments on it, just reply to this blog. Until next update,

Finally! Level 5!

Well finally, I thought it would take forever to reach level 5. As such, I now have access to the moderator queue for the guide submissions. So as of now, any user submission will be approved/denied faster than they were before, as I will be able to get to them faster than the other moderators. Make sure you're submissions are neat, with correct grammar, punctuation, capitalization, etc. If so, then your submission should go through without any difficulty. Until next update,

Phil of the Future
Avg Score: 8.78    Total Ratings: 1867    Total Reviews: 305
Just when you thought the Disney Channel was too stuck in Lizzie McGuire Hell to produce a decent teenage comedy, they think of this amusing and charming, if not a tad predictable comedy. Phil Diffy and his family live in the year 3000, when they take a vacation through time. The family is then left stranded in the present day, with suspicous eyes and primitive gadgets all around. Phil Diffy (the talented Ricky Ullman) finds an unlikely best friend in fellow Pickford High student Keeley Teslow (Alison Michalka), sharing his family secret. Phil's diabolical sister Pim (Amy Bruckner) can't help but see those around her with disdain. An intelligently written sitcom, "Phil of the Future" simply oozes charm.

The Nanny
Avg Score: 8.87    Total Ratings: 1545    Total Reviews: 80
She was working in a bridal shop in Flushing Queens when her boufriend kicked her out in one of those crushing scenes. But to make a long theme song short, Fran Fine (Actor and Producer Fran Dresher) gets a job as The Nanny for unappreciated theatre producer Maxwell Sheffield (Charles Shaunessy), despite her only qualification being her tight-fitting dresses and her nasally voice. She immediately sets out to set right the dysfunctional lives of the Sheffield children. Maggie (Nicholle Tom) has a fear of expressing herself, Brighton (Benjamin Salisbury) takes pleasure in torturing his siblings, and Gracie (Madeline Zima) is in psychiatric therapy twice a week. But there's a hitch. Maxwell's business partner C.C. Babcock (Lauren Lane) makes no secret in her dislike for Fran, seeing her encroach on what she considers her territory. Fran, however, finds an ally in fellow housekeeper Niles (Daniel Davis). Together, the quirks provide endless entertainment as Ms. Fine adjusts to the life of her upper class reporters. Her mother Sylvia Fine (Renee Taylor) cannot help but show her daughter the benefits of marrying a wealthy man, if only so that she can finally die happy.

The Nanny is an intelligent and provocatively written comedy that puts many of today's sitcoms to shame. The show shows the sexual encounters in life with tact and a great deal of humor. Even the naturally nasal voice of Fran (and her equally nasal family) are not immune to the wise cracks. The near-constant banter between C.C. and Niles provide the show with many of its finest moments. However, this is also one show that ingenuously blends the slapstick comedy of the days of "I Love Lucy" with the modern emphasis on situational comedy. Quite simply, this is a show that belongs in the halls of television fame. She's the lady in red, while everyone else is wearing gray. You'll love the flashy girl from Flushing, the nanny named Fran.

One Tree Hill
Avg Score: 8.98    Total Ratings: 11637    Total Reviews: 1139
The dillemma of today's teenagers searching for a show to cling to is widespread. Don't like superheros in romance like in 'Smallville?' 'The OC' not like you want in a drama. Then it may be time to choose 'One Tree Hill.'

Like 'OC' 'Hill' focuses on the beatiful citizens of a little town named Tree Hill. Lucas Scott (played by the surprisingly good Chad Michael Murray. Just disregard his 'House of Wax' turn) lives in town with his mother Karen (the fabulous Moira Kelly). Years ago Karen had an affair with wealthy Dan Scott (Paul Johannsen), but they split and Dan married Deb(Barbara Alyn Woods) and the two had a son named Nathan (James Lafferty). Although starting the show as fierce rivals, Lucas and Nathan eventually became friends, with Nathan even marrying Lucas' best friend Hayley (Bethany Joy Lenz).

Like most soap operas, 'Tree Hill' has a great deal of potential. It has a great front burner cast with an even better supporting cast in Barry Corbin, Craig Sheffer, and Lee Norris. However, the writing needs some turnover. Storylines meander without a rudder, new characters are brought on that suck up time from established characters. For a fairly new show, characters should be brought on gradually. The writers have a good idea of what goes into a good cliffhanger, but have trouble following up on it. The first season finale ended with the marriage of Nathan and Hayley, yet the couple was seemingly doomed by a rather pointless music career storyline featuring the bland Chris Keller (Tyler Hilton).

All in all, if the writers are able to stick to their guns and their incredible established cast, this teen drama could have ths staying power of The WB's previous hits.

Guiding Light is a show with limitless potential that is simply not being realized by current headwriter David Kreizman. The stories are illogical, mindnumbing, cliche, and uninspired. The show lacks heart, it lacks soul. The characters that represent the core of the show are disrespected and disregarded, while the show remains populated by ill-defined and destroyed characters. Instead of what should be a case study of the human condition, the show has stooped to shock-driven slop. The LIGHT has faded from view.

About Me

GLFanDan
:Stands Up: Hello, my name is Dan. And I, am a soap-aholic. My favorite happens to be Guiding Light. My first memory of the show is coming home from school and seeing Reva on trial for killing Annie Dutton's baby. Yes. I *am* that young. But it isn't my fault my mother didn't wean me on GL in the womb. I wish she would have so I wouldn't have to watch videos just to see stories I would have killed to watch when they actually occured. Thank God for the internet. It's a soap fanatic's best friend.
