I think "Home" is officially my favourite episode of Everwood now. I mean, I'll have to re-watch season four, but I don't see anything topping it. It was just perfection. Every scene was perfect, with so many amazing moments and so many amazing lines.
I think the voiceover at the beginning is probably the best out of the whole series. Bringing it back to the pilot ("I wasn't there the day..."), wrapping up the whole season in a few short sentences and images...amazing stuff.
Colin's goodbyes are so special. My favourite is easily Colin and Bright's. I really think this is one of my favourite moments of the whole entire show, which is amazing because it doesn't even involve Andy or Ephram. It's so heartfelt, and then it closes so great with Colin looking at Bright in a true moment of friendship, and then Bright's: BRIGHT: "So which one costs the extra twenty-seven cents?" [catches up] "Oh, the one that costs twenty-seven cents more." It's a great ending to the scene. Leave us smiling through our tears as Everwood so often does.
I mean, we never really get to see what makes Colin and Bright best friends, we get exposition and some moments of it, but this it, we get it right away, we get the special bond the two of them have. It's also such a special moment between two guys that you don't see on television.
And the moment between Colin and his father. Just like Colin and Bright, we never really get much of a chance to see them as father and son, but this is it. Again, we see it now. It's a very sweet moment the two of them have.
I love how this show makes the medical stuff interesting. Basically, we have a scene between doctor and mentor about a bunch of technical jargon and they make it work with these props and just the banter and the acting between the two of them. Just want to mention that the commentary makes the scene HILARIOUS! *cheap plug for the DVD*
The score is so great in the episode. It usually is, but it really stands out tonight. Same with the direction; when they walk into the baseball stadium and when Amy and Colin drive off on the long way home...wow, that just feels like a movie to me. A good movie too.
So many revelations and special moments tonight. The discovery of Andy Brown, Ephram finding out how "remarkable" his father truly was, Ephram telling his father that he can go back to New York, Andy saying no, Ephram finding out why they've come to Everwood, Colin's "I love you Amy", the before mentioned Bright/Colin and Colin/father scene, Colin saying he doesn't want to come back if he isn't the same, the moment between Amy and Ephram, the moment between Colin and his Mom, the montage.
I mean, this all happens in ONE episode. And every single moment is perfection. Sometimes when watching this show, I think I take for granted how amazing it is, but watching this episode, it just blows me away how much was done and how well it was done in one single episode; and it's not all contained in one episode, it's all connected to previous episodes in the season, even as far back as the pilot. And this happens in many other episodes as well.
I think, no, I know, if there was one episode to show someone what makes Everwood Everwood, what makes us Everwoodians all obsessed, "Home" would be it. It has the amazing characters, the continuity, the comedy, the moments that make you smile, the many moments that make you cry and all those moments that make you truly care about these characters, and that doesn't even begin to sum up the greatness of this episode. "Home" is Everwood at its best.
