Thumbs...down?

I've just now looked at my contributions page, and realized that a trend is already developing....I'm picking only actors, shows, and eps that I really like to review.

I'm of two minds about this:  one part of me thinks that's a little skewed...if I'm recommending things to people with my reviews of them, shouldn't I be also warning people to steer clear of other things?  The other part of me thinks that that way lies trollish behavior- something I would never do.   Plus, do I really want to be tangling with other people who love the very thing I'm putting down?  (Or is that last part me just being chicken )

For now, I think I'm going to stick to my current method of whining about things in my blog...

Atlantis...

So, I'd like to preface this by saying that I'm a big fan of Stargate: Atlantis, for a lot of reasons.  I've revelled in the highlights of the series with other fans, and defended the lows from critics.  So I'm saying this as an honest, constructive criticism:  this whole retrovirus story arc is bugging the crap out of me.

It doesn't feel like the writers are presenting many facets of a complex issue; it feels like the writers are wavering and undecided about the direction they want to take this.   In the early days of Stargate, one of the biggest attractions to the show was how the writers would take a point of view on any given issue and have it personifed by a character.  It made for great television, and interesting debate, because it was harder to dismiss any one point of view when you liked more than one character (a great example of this is any debate early Jack and Daniel had).   This is not really happening on Atlantis.

To date, I can't really tell how Sheppard, Weir, Teyla or McKay really feel about what they've done- justified? ashamed?  Even watching them be conflicted would be more interesting, more fulfilling, than this current black out of discussion.  It's gotten to the point where I'm relieved Ronon is in a scene- because even he's a one note character, at least he'll stay true to that one note.  He's the only character with conviction at this point.

Well, almost the only character- Beckett certainly has a firm viewpoint after all.  But that brings me to the thing that irritates me most about this storyline:  the viewpoint (personified by Beckett) that the wraith are only worth caring about when theyve taken human form.  Either the enemy are living beings, and have rights, or they don't- but to say they only matter when they're 'like you' is an ugly viewpoint disguised as morality.

*sighs*  This is all tumbling out of my head without forethought; maybe I'll mull it over more and try to present my POV more coherently later.

My first entry...

Wow, was just stopping by to peruse the generally stellar cast lists of some anime shows I'm watching (sometimes it's really hard to find out information about English cast anime voice actors...maybe I'm just looking in all the wrong places...) and realized I have things I want to contribute.  Trouble is, for most of it I have to be at least level 2!  So, here I am, getting far more involved around here than I intended 20 minutes before work....*chuckles*  but that's okay.  So far, I've seen a lot more interesting things than I would have if I had just skimmed the surface.  But I'd better run for the car now if I want to make it in on time...somehow, I doubt posting in my new TVcom account will be an acceptable excuse for being late...

10.0 Perfect
Futurama
Avg Score: 9.11    Total Ratings: 14620    Total Reviews: 894
Normally, I don't think anything's 'perfect', so I balked at giving a perfect '10' to Futurama. But here's the thing: I couldn't come up with a single legitimate reason to downgrade this show. There's no epidode that doesn't meet the highest standards of quality.

The animation? Clean and lovely to look at, not to mention filled with hidden jokes.

The writing? Outstanding- sharp, clever and relevant even today. Not to mention that behind the humor is real affection, giving this series a heart that few animated shows have.

The voice acting? Of the highest caliber. Every character is vividly portrayed and made nearly three dimensional. Every actor has impeccable comic timing.

The only thing wrong with Futrama is that there isn't more of it. And as that's hardly a reason to give the show a lower score, the '10' stands- and I highly reccomend.

9.8 Superb
The Venture Brothers
Avg Score: 9.05    Total Ratings: 1813    Total Reviews: 82
"The Venture Brothers" is the next evolution of vintage Cartoon Network/ Adult Swim shows like "Space Ghost", "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", "The Tick", and "The Brak Show". The Venture Brothers is the culmination the cutting, comedic powers that were so finely honed in it's predecessors...and a big payoff for those viewers who cut their teeth on watching them.

The Venture Brothers won't be for everyone, there's no denying that. It's frank, funny take on sexuality, violence, and everything in between will be too much to handle for some who watch it. But the real attraction for fans is not the outrageous language and actions that the show features, but the razor sharp humor and top notch voice acting that propel this show to it's high levels of quality. The jokes fly like bullets, almost too fast too take in, but with the precision of a sniper- the humor hits it's mark every time. There are so many standout characters that it's hard to pick favorites...though most viewers would likely mention Brock Samson at the top of the list.

There's very little in the way of a continuing plot, though repeated references to previous shows are made- you can start watching the show at any point in the series. At the time of this writing, the show is in Season Two, which is every bit as wickedly funny as the first season. I highly recommend this top notch show.

10.0 Perfect
Crispin Freeman
Avg Score: 9.85    Total Ratings: 97    Total Reviews: 10
There are few actors who would make me pick up a movie or series solely based on them being involved in it, but Crispin Freeman is one of those few. He takes any production he's involved in and elevates it to a higher quality. He gives marvelously complex and nuanced performances in everything he does. He can take a small part (for example, Joker in "Read or Die") and make the viewer involved and interested in them; when he has a lead part (such as Alucard in "Hellsing" or Shannon Cassul in "Scrapped Princess") he dominates the cast. I rarely give anyone such effusive praise, but rarely can I think of an actor without even one role that wasn't top quality. Check out anything (everything) Crispin Freeman has done- you won't be disapointed.

Gives an amazing performance in the all around stellar cast of "Scrapped Princess" (where she costars as Raquel Cassul), Bridget Hoffman gives amazing depth and charisma to any character she voices. She especially suceeds at giving a deceptively sweet and simple voice to someone who has great hidden depths...and then revealing those depths slowly. She really just gets more and more interesting the longer you listen to her. Also check Bridget Hoffman out in the recurring role of Rem in "Trigun"...she gives an air of mystery and sweetness to the role that makes it easy to see why the main character is haunted by her. She's a standout in any anime.

I'm a broke college student working in retail hell (though I'm lucky enough to be working with a lot of really cool people). I like sarcasm, sleeping in, coffee, SG Atlantis, Anita Blake novels, video games, anime, and Veronica Mars. I DON'T like most reality tv, people who are patronizing, and celery.
