MAR: Marchen Awakens Romance - Coming to Toonami Jetstream (July 17, 2006)!
MAR is easily one of my favorite mangas, but I've never seen the anime before. In a few hours, I will be able to experience the MAR anime via YouTube. I'm getting very excited that it's coming to Toonami Jetstream, and I'd love to see the anime before it's dubbed. If you've never heard of this anime/manga, I suggest that you read below. I have posted a quick summary (thanks to Wikipedia).
MAR: Marchen Awakens Romance is a popular manga series created by Nobuyuki Anzai - the creator of Flame of Recca. A television anime of the series also exists and in Japan is broadcast on TXN stations. The Anime is severely toned down from the manga, containing almost no blood (the manga is very graphic at times), referring to alcohol as "Paopu juice", and adding flashbacks, backstories, and dialogue that never occurred in the manga during battles, apparently to make the fight last an entire episode.
The story follows Ginta Toramizu, a boy who always dreamed of a fantasy world, but now has actually been transported to one - MAR Heaven. Here, his physical weakness is replaced with physical strength. Ginta quickly meets the mysterious witch Dorothy, who introduces him to the powerful ÄRMs; artifacts that can possess the power to transform into weapons, summon monsters, or other abilities. Ginta obtains a special ARM call Babbo. Babbo is unique: not only is he a weapon ARM, but he is also alive and can therefore talk, drink, and move of his own accord. Babbo was once the weapon of an infamous Knight named Phantom, the leader of the Chess Pieces who has return to conquer MAR Heaven.
As of 2005 the manga is still running and has reached about Chapter 112. The series is published in Japan by Shogakukan, in North America in English by VIZ Media, and in Singapore in English and Simplified Chinese by Chuang Yi.
MAR has been announced to be a part of Cartoon Network's new online broadband service called Toonami Jetstream. It is slated to begin July 17, 2006.
If you're interested in the MAR anime as much as I am, you can watch the first episode (in Japanese; subtitled in English) by clicking on the following URL address: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_D431jwqUxo. Enjoy!

MAR owns your ass,

Happy Easter!
Hello all. I hope you all have a happy Easter. I know I won't be doing much today, but I do need to go to church quite soon. The next paragraph is just for clutter, it's about the background of Easter (from Wikipedia). If you want to read it, go ahead.
Easter is the most important religious holiday of the Christian liturgical year, observed between late March and late April (early April to early May in Eastern Christianity) to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, which Christians believe occurred after his death by crucifixion in AD 27-33 (see Good Friday). Easter can also refer to the season of the church year, lasting for fifty days, which follows this holiday and ends at Pentecost. Easter Day is also called the Sunday of the Resurrection or "Resurrection Day."
In most languages of Christian societies, other than English, German and some Slavic languages, the holiday's name is derived from Pesach, the Hebrew name of Passover, a Jewish holiday to which the Christian Easter is intimately linked. Easter depends on Passover not only for much of its symbolic meaning but also for its position in the calendar; the Last Supper shared by Jesus and his disciples before his crucifixion is generally thought of as a Passover seder, based on the chronology in the Synoptic Gospels. The Gospel of John has a different chronology which has Christ's death at the time of the slaughter of the Passover lambs, which may have been for theological reasons but which is regarded by some scholars as more historically likely given the surrounding events. This would put the Last Supper slightly before Passover, on 14 Nisan of the Hebrew calendar. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, "In fact, the Jewish feast was taken over into the Christian Easter celebration."
The English and German names, "Easter" and "Ostern", are not etymologically derived from Pesach and are instead related to ancient names for the month of April, Eostremonat and Ostaramanoth respectively. According to the 8th century Christian monk and historian Bede, this month was dedicated to the pagan fertility goddess Eostre. The Easter Bunny is often identified as a remnant of this fertility festival, although there is no evidence of any link.

Spring Break Break's Historical Background
In the U.S., spring break ranges from the end of February to mid-April, but most schools are out the first two weeks of March. In Canadian universities, it is known as Reading week and is in late February or early March.
In Japan, the spring break starts with the end of the academic year in March and ends on April 1 with the beginning of a new academic year.
Spring break is also celebrated by K-12 institutions, and is also known as March break. March break is invariably one or both of the middle two weeks of March. Some K-12 institutions coincide their spring break with Easter.
From the end of World War II until the 1980s, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was a notorious spring break destination in the United States. On March 19, 2006, the New York Times reported that Fort Lauderdale's reputation as a Spring break destination for college students started when the Colgate University men's swimming team came to practice there over break in 1935. Spring break's notorieties include increased drinking and sexuality, including public nudity. Residents of the area became so upset at the damage done by vacationers, that the local government passed laws restricting parties in 1985. By 1989, the number of college vacationers fell to 20,000, a far cry from the 350,000 who went to Fort Lauderdale four years prior. Spring break partygoers responded by moving to the much more liberal Daytona Beach area (over 200,000 students traveled there each spring at its peak), but after Daytona's local government undertook similar measures, the crowds of the mid-1990s and early 2000s had fallen to a point where "a few students still come, but officials don't even estimate their numbers." Fort Lauderdale suffered a recession as a result of the self-imposed boycott, but the local hotel industry survived by catering to the retirement population.
The most popular spring break spots today include Cancún, Mexico; Miami Beach (in particular the South Beach area); Jamaica; Acapulco, Mexico; South Padre Island, Texas; and Panama City Beach, Florida. About 1,000,000 students go on spring break to these locations (USA Today, 5 January 2003). Most students purchase specialized packaged tours. There are several logistics companies that charter airplanes and buy large blocks of hotel rooms to offer the deep discounts most college students need. Prices range from about $600 to $1400, which includes airfare, hotel, and 50 hours of open bar.
Alternative spring break trips are becoming more popular. For more charity oriented students, package trips are available to help people in poor countries, experience nature, and other activities outside the typical party scene.
A similar type of vacation is known as Senior week in the Northeast United States. Senior week follows high school graduation, where graduating seniors will go on a similar week-long vacation to a beach location.

Teen Titans Things Change Avg Score: 7.32 Total Ratings: 409 Total Reviews: 197 |
I’m going to start off by saying I was never that infatuated with Terra’s character. She was fun while she lasted, but I liked her better dead. Her return did absolutely nothing for me, though I won’t deny that Beast Boy having trouble letting go was sad.
For many this episode just raises more questions. Terra miraculously appears and no explanation for her departure from her stone form is given. For Beast Boy it doesn’t matter, nor for many fans do I imagine. But you can’t just brush this fact aside; this Terra we see now is deeply rooted in school with friends and a complete lack of knowledge of her past life. I could surmise that she was faking it and didn’t want to admit she remembered anything, but it really doesn’t matter since this was the final episode.
Another question that pops up is Slade. Yup, he’s back but only via another one of his robots (makes you wonder how many times we’ve actually seen the real Slade) and tells Beast Boy to leave Terra alone. This only adds more to the mystery of her return. For a final episode it certainly didn’t wrap anything up.
Of course, as Joss Whedon (I think it was him) said “never give fans what they want.” I’m sure no fan in their wildest, crappiest Teen Titans fan fiction ever thought of Terra coming back with no memory and real no desire to go back to her former life. I have to give Amy Wolfram credit for giving us something we didn’t think of. It did make for a more interesting episode than the predictable drivel that we’d gotten from the rest of the season.
I’m conflicted on what I want to say about this episode. On one hand, I thought it was a horrible and completely crappy way for the final episode of a series to end and yet the more I dissect and tear this thing apart, I begin to appreciate it more and more. It answered absolutely none of our questions from this or previous seasons (Who is Red X? Who activated that powder in Slade’s mask that drove Robin crazy? What in the hell was in that case?!) and yet I’m almost satisfied more this way. If Lost has taught me anything, the answers we get never live up to the hype so it’s almost better to leave us guessing and wanting rather than complaining about how it didn’t work out how we wanted it.
Most certainly this episode will be the talk of Titans fans up until the “Trouble in Tokyo” DTV hits shelves and rightfully so. There are plenty of questions to ponder and answers to formulate and more horrible fan fiction to write.
The animation was nothing to write home about, but Ritmanis did an awesome score at the end of the episode. When the dramatic cues hit after Beast Boy offers Terra his communicator the scenes emotional impact is amplified ten fold. No doubt about it, the music was one of the highlights of the episode.
There was also a lot of symbolism thrown around in here. The weird villain the rest of the Titans were fighting kept changing forms, the traffic light changing colors and also a few neat visual elements like the individual frames for Terra and Beast Boy when they’re first in Titans Tower and they continue to “grow apart.” Some will call it metaphorical BS, but I thought it added to the episode. It felt out of place in an episode of Teen Titans, considering we’d never see anything like it before in this show, but it still added to the impact of the episode. And also beat into our skulls the name of the episode.
Even in its ups and downs, Teen Titans was still one of the most entertaining, action and humor filled cartoon I’ve seen in a long time. It’s a shame that what originality it created will be copied over and over into mindless shows that “Cartoon” Network will continue to “amaze” it’s audience with.
Overall I can’t fully say that this was a satisfying end to the series. I also can’t call it a bad episode; perhaps if it had been thrown into season three instead of so far back into the series it would’ve played out better, but as it stands it’s still a solid episode and one fans of Terra will undoubtedly not want to miss.

Shaman King (Edited) A New Shaman Avg Score: 9.24 Total Ratings: 20 Total Reviews: 3 |
After commanding Morty to get breakfast ready, Anna asks Yoh what he thinks about how such a weak spirit such as Tokageroh could possess Rio. At that point, Trey makes his entrance from the bathroom. Anna is angry that he’s still in the bathroom and she storms off.
Rio awakens and apologizes for being weak and having an impure heart. Since he was younger, he has been a lone spirit searching for meaning, but he’s always had a void in his heart that he’s called Tokageroh. He starts apologizing profusely to Yoh, Amidamaru, and Anna, specifically to Amidamaru for causing him to break his own sword to save him. Yoh is amazed Rio can see Amidamaru and he and Anna deduce that because Rio was possessed, his Shaman ability has now been awakened. Everyone is amazed. Rio is still stuck on the fact that he has broken Amidamaru’s sword. To make up for it, he cleans the house and takes on the cooking. Rio's gang hypothesize that while Rio may try to present a happy face, deep down, nothing will repay his debt to Amidamaru for the sword. Rio and The Deadenders begin talking about finding the Best Place again.
Rio sits alone. Amidamaru confronts him and asks him to forget the sword. Ryu can’t. Amidamaru can’t either and mourns the sword in a separate room.
Rio’s gang decides to repair his bike which will hopefully make Rio happy. Unfortunately, they have no money. They decide that since they can’t fix the bike, they will bring girls to the place. Yoh and Anna wonder about the spirits. They haven’t felt them since last night. Elsewhere in town, Rio’s gang try and fail at picking up girls. They decide to dress up as girls to make him feel better.
Anna and Yoh decide to make everyone feel better, they will summon Mosuke. She will put Mosuke in Rio so Amidamaru can talk to him. Rio gives Anna permission to call Mosuke into his body. Immediately, Mosuke strikes out accusing Amidamaru of breaking yet another of his swords. Amidamaru strikes back, having waited 600 years. They hit each other and then settle down as friends. Through Rio’s body, Mosuke repairs the sword and they decide to return it to the museum.
Above, a man throws down three feathers which change into monsters. Yoh laughs and comments that those are perfect beings to test the new Mosuke on. She throws the sword to Morty who tries to open the sheath but finds nothing. Yoh and Amidamaru merge and a new sword appears. When Amidamaru is with Yoh and holding the sword, it embodies Mosuke’s will and a spiritual blade forms. It is required for the Shaman fight. They make short work of the monsters and a feather lands at Trey’s feet. Anna explains that it is Mikihisa’s guardian, Yoh’s father. He comments that Yoh is improving, but this is only the beginning.
Rio rides off on his bike vowing to become a Shaman no matter what. Suddenly, a blue ball of light flies over his head. A voice tells Rio that they are the Destiny and the Destruction Star. At the same time, Yoh and Anna observe the Destiny and Destruction Star. The appearance of the stars designate that it is now time once again to begin the Shaman Fight.
Lenny and his sister also watch the star. He asks her if she still is thinking of Yoh. Lenny then vows to become the Shaman King.

At home, Anna is not impressed with Morty and Yoh’s cooking. Anna has them remake dinner again. On their way to get more ingredients at the food store, they stumble upon Rio at the bowling alley. Rio sees them coming and hides in the women’s bathroom, ashamed of giving up his dreams of becoming a Shaman. Morty has an instinct that there is a strange prescence in the bowling alley. Amidamaru feels the same prescence as Morty does. Amidamaru senses that an abnormal spirit out for vengeance seems to roam here. That night, Yoh decides that he should ask Anna about the evil spirits. Suddenly, they realize they were supposed to buy ingredients for Anna and run off hoping the store is still open.
Rio is still alone in the women’s bathroom. Out of no where, a lizard tells him that he’s waited 600 years to find someone he could reach. The lizard transforms into an ape inside the mirror and attacks him. Rio screams violently. When Rio's gang members find him, the spirit has already taken possession of Rio. Rio's gang can’t figure out why Rio is behaving so differently and demanding drinks and snacks. Rio suddenly demands his gang to get Amidamaru's sword, The Sword of Light.
After many tries, Anna finally accepted their cooking. While Yoh handles the dishes, Anna researches the haunted bowling alley. Anna tells Yoh that it used to be a hideout for thieves that stole food from the locals. The thieves' leader was a strange-looking man named Tokageroh.
Rio and gang set out looking for the Sword of Light. Rio and his gang break into the museum to find it. Meanwhile, Muscle Punch tries to persuade him from stealing. Rio reveals that he is the thief, Tokageroh, and stealing is what he does. Morty overhears Rio and he then sees the spirit that has possessed Rio. Rio threatens that if someone tries stopping him, the person will not get off so easily. Tokageroh grabs Amidamaru’s old sword, intent on killing him with his own sword - that will be his revenge. Morty runs as fast as he can to warn Yoh, but Tokageroh jumps out the window and blocks his path. Before Morty knows it, he becomes Tokageroh's hostage.
Yoh, Amidamaru and Anna all feel Morty screaming in their hearts. Anna calls it a message from the stars, or as the Japanese would say, "a notice from the insects". Suddently, Tokageroh shows up with Morty as hostage. Anna senses that Rio is being possessed by something. Anna tells him to reveal his true form, and the thief, Tokageroh, appears. Tokageroh seeks revenge on Amidamaru.

Lenny and his sister exchange words about Pai Long. He will carry out their revenge. She answers that they are finished. They walk into their apartment to find Jenny, a girl with blue hair, and another member of the Tao family. Jenny has come to make sure that Lenny becomes Shaman King at any cost. She has decided that she will be the one to dispose Yoh Asakura. Jun does not want her to fight and she asks Jenny to leave. Jenny Tao refuses. Jun calls forth Pai Long and Jenny calls Yugai, informing Jun that Jun's uncle's commands are absolute. Yugai is able to percieve all of Pai Long’s moves. Jun and Jenny begin fighting. Len tells Jenny that it is enough. He doesn’t care what she does, but if she hurts his sister, he won’t forgive her. Lenny asks her to leave.
Rio confronts Yoh about his laziness. He has heard that there will be a bunch of Shamans like Len gathering, and if Yoh doesn’t train harder, he fears he will not be able to beat them. Suddenly, Jenny appears and has Yugai attack Yoh. Yugai is able to wrap a wire around Yoh’s neck. Rio steps in and strikes Yugai. It has no effect on Yugai other than to release the wire around Yoh’s neck. Yoh calls Amidamaru and Rio throws him his bokuto. The two fight Yugai with his wire whip. Suddenly, Yugai uses illusions to replicate himself several times to surround Yoh. Yoh calms down to see through the illusion and strike the real Yugai.
Yugai isn’t finished, however, and soon has a smoke screen up. The smoke apparently is made up of a paralysis substance because Yoh’s body starts going numb. She starts throwing ninja stars at him, which he is barely able to dodge. Morty and Rio lie by the side of the road unable to move. Luckily, Amidamaru isn’t effected by the numbness and blocks all the ninja star attacks. Yoh and Amidamaru then perform the Celestial Slash, and hit as she floats in the air. She explodes. Jenny stares in amazement and then walks away defeated.
