"Series classic"
Forty-year-old drag racers without licenses and buttery bad guys...oh yeah!
The host segments: Funny, I especially liked the drag race between Crow and Servo. The "interrupted" end credits were *classic* - "A piece of water," Frank??

The movie itself: I shamefully admit I enjoyed the movie, probably far too much. The characters were weird but they didn't annoy me somehow, and I quite enjoyed the villain. And - shoot me - I liked the songs!

The riffed movie: Butter. Butter. And more butter. Well, you can't go wrong when making butter comments when there's a fat man on the screen, can you? No, no...there were some really good lines in there, there were.

I highly recommend this one.

The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley
"Underappreciated"
This show was as doomed as doomed could be, sad to say.
I remember watching this show when it first came out, when I was about 13 or so. I recall enjoying it but not really "appreciating" it. When I watch it now, I can really appreciate it, though I can also see its flaws. The main flaw that I can see is its lack of linear storytelling - the epsiodes tend to have very rambling stories with a hazy plot and even hazier subplots. However, the storytelling itself is fun, if you don't mind scenes that contribute nothing to the plot (as it were).

The *best* thing about this show is its characters. People who say Ed Grimley is a stupid character probably have never taken the time to really observe him. I think he's terriffic, and I just can't get tired of him. The show's supporting characters are great (Wendell is my favorite, I'd love if he were *my* little brother). Count Floyd is my HERO. And Miss Malone and Ed totally belong together, "no question." Too bad the show didn't last long enough for that to happen. But in my mind, it did in time. :)

"Not my favorite storyline"
Ah, poking fun at other people's movies...
I thought it was a bit mean of them to make fun of the Lassie movie like that. *grin* But still, that's the kind of joke you get on this show. The Alphabet Song isn't one of the Trio's better musical numbers, and Is So Too is so too just annoying. Still, it's nice to see that Vic made it on the show.

"Silly"
A good example of a franchise parodying itself.
Spooking Bee: Casper's (planned) scare was terriffic - implausible and all, but still great, and I commend the writers for coming up with that one. Poil is great here.

Fugedaboutit: A worthy homage to the Scene That Never Was, abandoned on the cutting-room floor. Good choice for the first episode of the series.

The Flew: A weird episode, and somewhat disturbing. But then, sentient germs are always disturbing.

Popeye's Voyage: The Quest for Pappy
"Alternate reality"
Honestly better than I thought it would be
Although this storyline does not mesh with storylines presented either in the Fleischer, Famous, or King Features cartoons (let alone the comic strip) this special isn't bad in its own way. I despise CGI adaptions of traditionally-animated characters, but the expressions, especially on Olive and Bluto, were well-done, and I liked the Sea Hag's design. But most of all I enjoyed the voice work - again, especially the Sea Hag. Cathy Bates did a wonderful job, and I *very much* prefer this characterisation of the Hag over her traditional gravelly, hag-like voice. The inclusion of Christmastime in the story seemed unnecessary and almost tacked on, as if the producers were only trying to capitallise on the holiday (who's to say that they weren't...). I was extremely disappointed in the way they barely used Wimpy in the story at all, and that is my biggest complaint. I don't recommend that anyone pay money to buy this DVD (er...unless there's extras, I haven't checked), but it's worthwhile in my opinion to catch this when it shows on TV.
