Barrowm Watch/ Doctor Who Finale/The Spoon Conundrum

Okay, I finally found out what my Aunt's source was on Barrowman's role in the Sound of Music. It was apparently from teh Daily Mail ... which means that it may not be all that saturated in fact. Which is horribly depressing. Google is being terrible unhelpful as it keeps giving me interviews from him on the reality show rather than the production.

There is nothing on Barrowman's official site though - so that is troubling. Why can't time and space fold in on eachother so Toronto is also London where I know he actually has shows booked?

Also depressing, Doctor Who finale before a far too long break. I don't really want to wait until 2010 for more episodes with only a few specials to tide me over. It looks like Ianto and Gwen are going to die and as much as Gwen annoys me - I really really really don't want Ianto dead. I've never been so terrified and yet excited to watch a finale as I am to watch tomorrow's episode. I'm going to be obsessively checking all the torrent sites tomorrow. I know it. Also - Where will I get my David Tennant fix?

The most troubling news though - spoons. I'd like to pose a question. Why is it that spoons disappear the fastest? Did you know that if you want to keep a steady supply of 70 spoons you have to buy 150 of them? I just read this study that proved it. Spoons are the household items mostly likely to go missing. My father accused me of deliberately stealing spoons as a social experiement last night and as awesome as I think that concept is - it wasn't actually me. Perhaps the portal that used to steal my socks from the dryer has now moved to the dishwasher?

Missing Spoons, Missing JB's, Missing Doctor Who's. What will this world come to?

Passgate '08 Update/Wonder Showzen/John Barrowmania October'08

Well my pass card was being super tricky and sleuth the other day. I found it, in all its offwhite glory on top of a pile of offwhite paper. almos the same shade ... Anyway so the coffee I bought today got to be for me instead of Ashfar which was pleasant and necessary because I am exhausted.

I got home late last night (2 am) because of a concert and for some reason that translated to watching the first few episodes of Wonder Showzen. Now ... words can't really describe this show. It is beyond absurd and horrible and deliciously politically incorrect. Think South Park but far far worse haha. Half the people that watch this love it to pieces and the other half hate it utterly and with a depth of contempt they didn't know they ever had. I am firmly in camp one. It combines animation and puppets with an utterly kiddish look but with complete adult content. It got two seasons, 8 episodes each, 16 in total and I really wish there were more.

I offer this show to you but with a warning which is of course: Not For Everyone. The opening title is really catchy but not appropriate if I want to keep this PG.

Lastly, I just found out that John Barrowman is actually going to star in the musical production of the Sound of Music here in Toronto. He's currently the celebrity guest judge on Canada's How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? The show starts in October and apparently I have a ticket. The man is gregarious and outrageous and it'll be interesting to see him play the stern and subdued Captain Von Trapp. Also - rawr - he shall make one pretty piece of eyecandy on stage. Sorry did I say that outloud?

Weeds/Why do passcards exist?

They exist to disappear and leave you very confounded on where exactly they could have ended up. I need a passcard to use the elevator and to open all doors at work. I have also lost my passcard. It's either in my duffle bag I took on my trip this weekend, on train 46, or in Kingston. Either way. It's not on my persons and I now have to bribe the security guard with coffee to lend me a temporary replacement.

On a separate note - is it just me or is Weeds becoming a darker and darker comedy. I like my humour black but its becoming a little dark for even my tastes. Euthanasia as a comedic situation seems a little harsh. How much further are we going to go down this rabbit hole? Last week it was joking about rape kits and this week smothering people with pillows. Can Weeds go back to the fun times of blackmail, sham marriages, absurd businesses as fronts for taxes with grow-ops in the backroom, and PTA Celia wreaking delicious havok?

Young People F******g and Other Movies I'd just watched

Here are just a few movies that you may not have heard of that are great and you should now watch.

Young People F***ing: I just saw this movie in theatres. Absolutely hilarious. It's rated 18A here in Canada (which means you have to be 18+ or chaperoned by someone 18+). It looks at one night in bed with five different types of relationships. It's surprisingly tongue-in-cheek and non-explicit and did I mention it was hilarious?

Strictly Ballroom: This is an older movie and is an Australian Comedy. It's about ballroom dancing and follows a dancer who wants to do his own steps who and the girl who helps him do this. It's ridiculous but all in a good way. I don't know what a Bogo Pogo is, but I know want to learn.

Sharkwater: This is an amazing documentary about a Canadian marine biologist who starts off making a movie about sharks and ends up making a movie to save sharks instead. Shark finning is widespread, illegal, and could devestate the shark population. I suggest it to anyone and everyone.

Offside: This is a fabulous Iranian movie about girls who dress up as men and try and sneak into soccer games (because it is illegal for women to attend soccer games). This is a beautiful film with a really satisfying ending and you'd think it could get boring but I loved it from start to end.

Summer TV: Guilty Pleasures (Final Part)

Guilty Pleasures exist and well - I am not feeling all that guity nowadays about what I watch because I've decided to become a total hedonist. My first step to this transition involved buying a 5 dollar latte this morning. It tasted of Maple and was delicious. Do you know what else is delicious?

Hell's Kitchen: Do I love the Brits? Yes I'm a total Anglophile. Do I love watching people get belittled and yelled at by a raving lunatic? Immensely. Do I hate reality television? Yes but hearing Ramsay call somone a "Stupid Donkey" ever few minutes is well worth it. I tune into this show week in and week out. I even hate the contestants but I do it because of my love of angry British People. When Hell's Kitchen isn't on - I watch old reruns of Black Books to ease the pain of separation.

Jon & Kate + 8: Okay, here is the thing. It's a deep dark secret of mine but since this is the internet. I shall reveal the truth. I love the TLC network. Whenever I feel sick or sad, I turn it on and let it comfort me in lieu of chicken noodle soup (I'm vegetarian) and parents (because I don't usually live with them). This show is about people who had two sets of multiples. Two twin girls and then sextuplets. I like watching them and thinking - I will never be that effed in my life. Also, if they can survive with 8 young children under the age of 8. I can live with two essays that are wreaking havok with my nerves.

Repeats of Gossip Girl: Oh god, this show. I used to be ashamed I watched it but I do and I love it. I went to an all girl's school. I learned to love the drama of queen bees, usurpings, and dirty dirty warfare. Granted we never had a gossip website but the rumour circuit was so well honed even I was updated constantly. This probably doesn't count but I tune into this show every week despite already watching it the first time through.

How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?: By voting apparently. This was a show that ran in England to find the lead in their new stage production of the Sound of Music. They are doing the same for the new production in Toronto. I already have tickets to go see it. I figured I should at least make sure the girl I want to be Maria is Maria. And if you are wondering if I have voted ... no but I was sorely tempted to. I think there is a trend of reality shows making this list.

The Middleman: This is going here because its off of the ABC Family network and I'm sorry. The show is so campy and so awesome but that's its home and anything that network produces is a guilty pleasure (see GREEK and Kyle XY)

Stargate Atlantis: Here is a sci-fi show that I watch for two reasons (Incredibly hilarious saracsm and a starring character who is Canadian and often saves the day. His annoyingness factor has decreased the more I watch him). I wouldn't call it good though. Like its predecesor, it is utterly formulaic and the universe isn't well thought out. The entire universe speaks English? Really? At least Star Trek had a transaltion device and Hitchhiker's Guide had the babel fish and Doctor Who has the TARDIS. Stargate just has this miraculous luck that the whole universe speaks English. It's a good thing the Russians or the Chinese didn't discover the Stargate first. I'll watch it because the characters amuse me but as a sci-fi series. It has major flaws that I can't really overlook.

This is it and there are a few missing from all lists. Mostly the bad show list. I didn't mention America's Got Talent but that show is the WORST SHOW ON TV RIGHT NOW. I'd rather watch the MOMENT OF TRUTH. That is how much I despise that entire show.

The previews for this episode had me really excited but I was left rather unsatisfied. Thank goodness Reset was there, right afterward, to counteract the Adam effect. This was a fine idea, in fact, I loved the idea. Someone infiltrates Torchwood and plays with their memories so they think he has always been there. Some of the plot directions, character 'developments', and character insights were just painful to watch at times and left the episode feeling poorly executed. Plotwise I had a number of issues. First one being how Adam was discovered. Ianto apparently has a diary and as amusing as that is, the fact that it saves the day is a little distressing. You'd think with all that Adam had been able to do he would have clued in on destroying all the evidence just a bit better. Adam knew of the diary and then just left it lying around? He also knew that they had CCTV and could obviously hack the computer system so his inability to delete CCTV footage is mindboggling.

I also hated that one scene when they are in the boardroom trying to get rid of Adam by remembering things that make them who they are. Not only was that set-up odd and forced but some of the revelations were lackluster. I loved the insight on Owen's past with his mother. Loved it, that alone made me not completely hate this episode. What we found out about Tosh was rather obvious. She has always been smart and has never been able to have a real or healthy relationship. Ianto's personality is only formed by people he has sex with. Lisa was wonderful until she was cyberman-atised and afterward Ianto became a bit like a robot. Once he started shacking up with Jack - he got a sense of humour. Gwen is similarly defined by people she sleeps with and she loves Jack. Once again, nothing new. When Jack was going to each, giving them retcon, it felt just a little too awkward and forced not to mention cheesy (especially some of those one-liners).

There were only two other things (after an already extensive list I realise) that truly annoyed me. Apparently baseball exists even in the 51st century. Considering almost all of the major sports we play now have only existed for the past 150 years (with a few exceptions) this seems highly improbable. Jack is from another time. It should have been more obvious from that flashback. It wasn't nearly as progressive as I thought it would be. There was such potential there and in the end it felt more like a jump back in our own time then a leap forward into the future. I wanted Jack to have like 3 parents or something like that or a part alien sibling. Instead he lives in a desert with the typical nuclear family. Finally, Owen's geekiness, while amusing, was a little cliched(i.e. glasses) though I do understand the need for the contrast with this episode and Reset for the Tosh/Owen dating-dance, which was a nice touch. The sum it up, great potential - poorly realised.

Robin Hood
Avg Score: 8.89    Total Ratings: 1331    Total Reviews: 75
This show has really improved this second season. It has found its footing in an old tale, decided which story it wants to relate. Robin Hood has a great cast: wonderfully rich villains, anti-heroes, strong heroines, and delightful protagonists. There are a lot of things going for this series; it is funny, charming, with genuine heart to it.

The writing has improved and so has the characterisation over the past season. It is a show that is only getting better with time. Even though I disagree with some of its plot-decisions, the writers and producers have still always made each episode a delight to watch.

Despite all this, it is still a show that I'd only recommend to a certain segment of my friends. It is really a show written for women. Yes there are action sequences (it is Robin Hood afterall) but its main focus has always been on the characters. I love this show and I know others who'd love it as well but it isn't for everyone.

Supernatural
Malleus Maleficarum
Avg Score: 9.51    Total Ratings: 529    Total Reviews: 51
This episode was great for me because it finally explored a lot of issues raised in the last season's finale and the beginning of this season. The plot with the witches didn't seem all that new (people using black magic for personal gain only to have it turn back on them and the fact that they were in Massachusetts) but the twists were both pleasant and surprising.

This episode addressed many questions I've been having about this season so far. Firstly, we learned more about this war. For a while there I was wondering if there was actually a war. Now we know that there is something indeed happening and it doesn't bode well for our two protagonists.

We also learn more about demon culture and Hell. We learn what demons are and their origins. This is something I've always considered with this series and it is nice that to finally have it revealed. The highlight of this episode though was Ruby. This is surprising for me to say but now that I know more about her, I actually like her character. Her interaction with Dean was what made this episode. There is a chemistry between her and Dean that is definitely lacking with Bella. This was an okay episode on the weekly creature-feature side of the show but an excellent episode for the over-arching plot and for character development.

Meat

When I first read this episode's synopsis I was not all that thrilled about the concept. I never really minded Rhys as a background character but I was worried about how he'd fair in more of a limelight role. This episode ended up being not just watchable but actually kind of enjoyable. The plot was okay but it was the character development and themes which really made this episode. The theme of "meat" is not one we are knew to. It was first brought up in last season's Countrycide, which looked at humans as just being meat. It was appalling and compared with this episode dealing with Aliens as meat we get the same sentiment. Treating anything as just meat and not as a sentient being is wrong, human or whalien. Another theme which carries over from last week is that just because it is Alien doesn't mean we get to mistreat it. Character-wise, I liked this episode for the most part. Ianto, after two episodes is still funny. I like season two!Ianto. Tosh's character is finally getting a personality even if it through her horribly choice in lovers/crushes. Owen is being more and more likeable. I hated Owen in the first season and he is growing on me and quickly becoming a favourite. As much as the Gwen/Jack story-line irks me, it is a wonderful way to explore Gwen's relationship with Rhys. On a side note, the CGI for the whalien was okay but the shot when Rhys and Gwen were coming down the invisible lift was astonishing. Especially when the pterodactyl (I thought it had died) flew overhead.

Doctor Who (2005)

This mordern revival makes for the most remarkable and lovable 50-odd minutes of my week. I have been counting down to Christmas just for the special - bugger-all to family. It really does have something for everyone. I'd recommend this show in an instant to both my sci-fi-loving friends and to my sci-fi-abhorring friends. For the former group there are some delicious complexities involving time, time-lines, time continuity which should fill their little hearts and minds with glee. It also has some amazing alien societies and interesting futures for the human race.

For the latter group of friends this show is in the end a truly character-driven show. It deals with all the issues we deal with; loneliness, how we fill those voids, family, friendship, love, and a whole range of others. We are focusing on the Doctor, the last of his race, as he goes about doing what he must to protect the universe and the companions he has along the way who help to show us different sides of him, this life, this universe.

Doctor Who is funny, quirky, intelligent, and will make you fall in love with it. It has only been getting better and I pray that it will continue for years to come.

Heyo, I'm a 19-year old Canadian, vegetarian, undergrad student double majoring in mathematics and linguistics. Besides enjoying the obvious (television), I absolutely love music - of almost any genre (except for high concept acoustic/electronica). I'm absolute rubbish at these things so I'm going to finish it here.
