Ridiculous
This is a conversation that should not even be taking place.
Am I the only one who sees that? Am I?
Read the thread.
There are just so many things on this site that need time and attention from the staff. Yet, instead, they are spending their time thinking about how to reinstate voluntarily retired editors.
Why?
Is this really necessary? How many editors will it ~actually~ affect? And is there really an editor who is SO busy that they can't check in once a week? I mean, what... is someone going to move to a mud hut in the middle of the desert where there's no internet? Really?
Even if it's necessary, it certainly isn't more important than fixing the bugs that have infested this site for years.
And that alone makes the conversation ridiculous. It should not be taking place.
More editors need to tell the staff this rather than weighing in with a yes or a no, and their ideas of how to make such a low-priority idea work.

Walk With Me Down Memory Lane
Last night I was tootling around on YouTube, watching videos for the J-pops that I don't get to listen to so much any more. Then I wandered into '80s territory, watching the videos for Pop! Goes My Heart from Music & Lyrics... just a model of '80s music, even though, technically, it's not. My question on this video is this: whose butt is whose?
I love this video, really, I do. That 'motorcycle move' thing that they do is priceless.
That then led me to watching some ~real~ '80s stuff, like When In Rome's The Promise, and Modern English's Melt With You, as well as the always fantastic Just Can't Get Enough by Depeche Mode, back when Vince Clarke was with them. This video is the one that the Music & Lyrics one reminds me of. From there, I moved on to other Vince Clarke stuff, including the definitively fun Take A Chance On Me with Vince and Andy Bell in full ABBA drag.
But then it happened... I typed a band name into the search box, and I was completely surprised at the number of results. I clicked on this one and then just sat there, in shock and awe...
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Wooooooooooooooooooooodddddddddddddddddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!
I don't think I was breathing. Really. The Bay City Rollers. I haven't seen them, heard of them, thought of them in ages. But there they were, just as I remembered them. And I ~do~ remember them.... every word, evidently, as I sat there singing along to Rock 'n Roll Love Letter, which I haven't heard in a good 30 years or so... let's see... 2008 - 1976 = yup, 32.
Wooooooooooooooooooooodddddddddddddddddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!
Okay, originally, I was a Derek fan, but then switched my allegiance over to Woody, the bass player. Don't know why. Don't know why Eric's soulful baby blues didn't do anything for me, either.
And then, the song... oh, my. Wouldn't You Like It?... only available on an import disc from the UK that I saved my money to buy. The raw sexuality of it all... and I remember every word. And, of course, who could forget the one that started it all, SATURDAY Night.
I don't think I've started breathing yet. How can I? I remember buying 16 Magazine, and reading all the latest on them. The first concert I ever went to was when the BCR played at the CNE in Toronto, and I made my friend go with me... we screamed ourselves hoarse. I remember when Allan quit the group, and Ian took his place. Then Ian quit, and Pat replaced him, but by that time, their star was waning. And then someone broke into our house and stole all our records, including all my BCR albums, and when we got the insurance money, I didn't replace them.
Watching the videos again really takes me back. And, you know, they weren't so bad, really. The songs are catchy, Les was a good singer, and hey, everybody needs a little plaid in their lives!

Sushi Anyone?
Watching: The 6 p.m. News on CTV.
Sushi anyone? I've now reached the lofty heights of level 52, Guzzlefish, and the emblem looks to be a lovely piece of maguro sushi, one of my favs. Maguro is tuna, which I much prefer to salmon.
Halloween is upon us, but I doubt I'll be dressing up. I have to work, so I guess I could go as someone who hates their job.
I've been watching 24 recently, and I just finished watching season 1. Wow! Yup... the longest day of Jack Bauer's life. It was absolutely fantastic, right up to the 8 - 9 p.m. episode, when everyone suddenly turned stupid! That's the hour where Lou Diamond Phillips (Richie Valens) dies... because Jack gets stupid! Really, I couldn't believe that one. I mean, there's Jack with Victor Drazen as a hostage, and Victor's son with the nameless warden (Phillips) that Jack just met 5 minutes ago as a hostage, and they're both threatening to shoot their hostages. "Drop you weapon or I'll shoot!" Okay...
See, the thing is, Jack has the upper hand. He's got the hostage that matters. Who's this other guy? No one. He doesn't even officially exist! All right, he exists, but his job and his work place don't. Yet Jack puts down his gun. Then the son shoots Richie Valens. Good for him, I thought. Utterly predictable, I thought. Why didn't Jack see that one coming? I thought.
And then in the next hour, Jack grabs a waitress and holds her hostage. He threatens Drazen saying that he'll kill the waitress if Drazen doesn't drop his gun. And I sat there thinking, 'yeah, why would he believe you, Mr. Empty Threats?' Then Drazen did the one thing that actually made me cheer out loud. He shot the waitress. Good for him. Now there's a man who knows how to get the job done, even if he is channeling some weird Speedy Gonzales accent.
And Kim... don't get me started on Kim. I just had to wonder if Elisha Cuthbert had any complaints about playing such a stupid and self-centred character?
But otherwise, I really liked it, and I'll be moving on to Day 2 for Jack. I traded my brother-in-law my Heroes set for his first two seasons of 24. Not a keepsies trade, though. He's got season 3, 4, and 5 as well, but he got season 4 while he was in Australia, so unless I get an all-areas dvd player, I won't be able to watch it. I really should get one, as I need it anyway, since I have about 100 area 2 dvds from Japan.
So the whole thing with all that shooting in 24 made me wonder about my "moral ambiguity". See, I would never think that shooting someone is right, or a good thing to do, but then again... there are just some situations, where, if you're going to do your job right, you have to shoot people. And that whole hostage situation with Jack and Victor Drazen was one such situation. Jack wasn't doing his job right.

Some adults may be offended by the content.
First song: Shingo Mama no Oha Rock.
The title of the blog is from the warning that runs before The Sopranos. I love that warning, which is, in full: This program is not intended for children. It contains scenes of violence, extremely coarse language and nudity. Some adults may be offended by the content. Viewer discretion is strongly advised. I think the only warning that I've seen that's better is the one that runs before Nip/Tuck, and while I could look that one up, I just don't feel like it. I think the part that I like best is that they say that some adults may be offended... that just means it's going to be a good show, in my opinion!
So the Emmys were last night, and I was in one of the chat rooms for a bit (hi Kimba!
), but since my computer and my tv are in different rooms, it was a little difficult, so I signed out of the chat room and just watched the show. There seemed to be a bit near the beginning that got censored in the States, but not in Canada. My favourite part... Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy. I'll bet there's been lots of people who have wanted to do that (whether the winner was there or not), and the pure joy that Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Steve Carrell displayed was just priceless. And the look on James Gandolfini's face when James Spader won Best Actor/Drama... well, that was pretty priceless too.
Otherwise, there's not too much new around here. The new season is about to start, and some of the shows look interesting, although I have to say, the more I hear about Gossip Girl, the less likely I am to watch it. I don't think I'll be giving Private Practice a go, since I didn't like the 2-hour Grey's that spawned it, although with my track record of watching shows that get cancelled, maybe I should do the world a favour (as Midi and I sort of decided we'd do) and watch/love it, so it will die a quick and quiet death.
Corner Gas starts season 5 here in Canada next Monday, and started airing in the States last Monday (previous seasons). And the big news here is that while the Number 1 comedy in Canada still doesn't have a banner after five years (yet shows that died a quick and quiet death like Drive (four episodes), Smith (three episodes), and Heist (five episodes) all do), we at least have a picture! Way to go staff! It's small, it's non-clickable, but it's there! Maybe now that it's on in the States, it will finally get a banner. We can only hope.

My Recent Reviews
Sam finds some things out about himself, and about his friends as well as the Devil himself. There's some character development, and I was glad to see it happen, as there's only so long that he can run around being a clueless nerd.
So Sam learns that the Devil doesn't always tell the truth; although why he'd think that would be the case is beyond me, but good for him for realizing it. The problem with the Devil is that sometimes what he's saying ~sounds~ like the truth. When he told Sam that his friends were unreliable, well, that just about sums up the two guys Sam works with, Sock especially. And then when Sock let Leon out... well, there's the Devil's point proven, right?
I admit, I let out a groan when that happened, because I didn't want the Devil to be right. And I was happy when Sock proved the Devil wrong by standing by Sam when the chips were down. These guys aren't what they appear to be on the surface, and that, I think, is a good thing for the longevity of the show. The whole Andi situation... well, are they friends or are they more? What happened to the fantastic guy with the twin sisters? There needs to be some plot clean-up there, but there's still time to deal with all that in the future.

Corner Gas Wash Me Avg Score: 9.50 Total Ratings: 10 Total Reviews: 1 |
Most of the story lines in this week's episode of Corner Gas were funny, but I just didn't find the Oscar/Emma plot funny... at all. I would have thought that a couple that's been married as long as they have wouldn't have 'sharing' issues any more.
The dirty truck being used as a notepad was funny, and inevitable that the phone number, the one important thing written on it, would be washed off. Having the Scouts be the ones to ruin things for Wanda was unexpected, and so made it funnier than if Hank had just messed things up the way he always does.
Karen's unexpected sketching ability was also humorous, particularly since everyone knew it was Davis she was drawing, except Davis. Small quibble with Davis shutting down the art show... since Lacey wasn't selling the liquor, did she really need a liquor licence? Hmmm...
But overall, a fairly humorous episode, although not the best of the season so far.

Reaper What About Blob Avg Score: 9.11 Total Ratings: 273 Total Reviews: 13 Users who agree: 3 |
This was another funny episode of Reaper. The use of a horrid sweater as the vessle was hilarious. Sam's attempts to have a relationship with Andi continue, only this time, the Devil took a much more active role in throwing up road blocks to stop it. He claims this is all for Sam's good, but can we believe him? After all, he is the Devil!
Sam also finally gets the contract that he's been asking to see; unfortunately, he never gets a chance to read it. And we find out that maybe Sam's dad isn't as nice as we thought either, as there's something in that contract that he doesn't want Sam to see, and he's made sure that Sam will never see whatever that is.
And a question that I was wondering about was also answered: what happens to those humans who come onto the Devil's radar? Well, we found out that they generally don't come to a good end, which means that Sam's friends can look forward to a firey future. The question is this: is Andi on his radar? He says she's not ~yet~... but let's face it, he ~is~ aware of her.

Dirty Sexy Money The Chiavennasca Avg Score: 8.91 Total Ratings: 125 Total Reviews: 6 Users who agree: 2 |
In this episode, Tripp Darling sends Nick off to Italy; just one of the perks of working for the Darling family. Of course, the trip doesn't go smoothly, as Karen and her finace tag along with Nick and Lisa on what was supposed to be a romantic get-away for them.
Karen revealed her true inner witch with her endless stories of her past with Nick. I was surprised that no one, other than her finace, said anything to make her shut up. And even what he said wasn't much... just a sarcastic comment to Nick reminiscing about ~their~ walks on the beach, and then his final comment to Karen after Lisa and Nick had left. Lisa waited too long to stake her claim; she should have done that at the table in the restaurant, and not waited until later. It was clear from Karen's reaction that she's taken Lisa's words as a challenge, and one that she's clearly up for. So it looks like we can expect her to pull more antics with Nick, especially when Lisa's around.
Jeremy and his 'friend with benefits'... well, the pregnancy was pretty obvious, from the first moment she said she felt queasy when she saw him eating a sausage. The surprising thing here is that they both think they're in love. And isn't it great that they have enough money that this unplanned, unwed pregnancy won't cause any problems in their lives?
Juliet seems stupid, but keeps pulling high level SAT vocabulary words out. That's always funny. Brian and his child... well, that story line is funny, but how much longer can he really keep that a secret? I loved that his son found the weakness in Brian, though.
But it's Tripp Darling (Donald Sutherland) who continues to amaze me with his acting. He is a true master. His controlled rage at Tish and how he as an actor portrays that is just amazing. It shows him to be a great actor with a great character to play.
I'm sure the writers will drag out the suspense of 'which one isn't Tripp's child?' as long as they can, which only makes watching the show even better, really... with every move that every child makes, we'll all be wondering "Is that the one?"
I look forward to seeing the next episode, as this is a show that just gets better with each installment.

This is one of two shows this fall where we have average (or even below average) guys who end up doing very specialized jobs; both guys work in drone-type go-nowhere jobs in big-box-type stores, have the nerdy friend, and have an unattainable girl of their dreams. "Chuck" is the other show; this one is the better of the two.
The pilot episode of Reaper made me laugh, although I admit that the humour was kind of juvenile. Sometimes, though, people just want that kind of humour, and it works in this show. It was good to see that Sam needed some help with his first assignment, and also good (in the tv-plot-type of way) to see that someone got hurt trying to capture the firebug. That's what made the episode believable. If he'd suddenly turned into some super-reaper, well, that wouldn't have worked for me. But he didn't; he needed help, he couldn't get his dirt devil to work, and he was scared silly by what he had to do.
And I'll be tuning in to see what he has to do next, now that I know he won't always be using the dirt devil to reap the souls. They've added some dimension to the show with that little twist, and that should make it interesting.
