The problems with being an editor on TV.com

I've thought recently about quitting the TV.com guide I'm the editor of. The original episode airdate information is what will make the episode guide a heck of a lot better. But this information seems to be near to impossible to find. But that is not the reason why I am considering quitting being the editor.

It's not a great deal of fun when it feels like you're being told off for something you haven't been doing. I'm talking about the points system and what level you are on. I don't always have the time to read what I assume are pages and pages of information which editors have to read, telling them how to edit their TV.com guide. It feels like you are being made to look stupid.

I think I have done a good job up to this point editing this tv show guide here. There are just a few problems with editing it sometimes, and also with making submissions for other tv shows.

I'll see how it goes in the coming weeks.

The running time of programmes these days

One of the things with TV which has disappointed me in recent years, and annoying me now, is the running time of programmes. It's not just US shows but also UK ones as well. But it's mainly the running time of US programmes which annoy me. Back in the 60s, and up to the 80s (I haven't watched any or many programmes from the 50s so I can't say how long one edition of aprogramme from the 50s lasted for) episodes of dramas etc. used to be around 48 minutes long. And in some cases even 50-52 minutes (I'm thinking of the DVD boxset of Kolchak: The Night Stalker TV series from 1974-75). In the 80s programmes were still quite long in running time, being around 46-48 minutes.

But as we went into the 90s the running time of programmes have got less and much less by the end of the decade and the new millennium. Episodes of The X Files used to be around 43-44 minutes but by the time of it's last season (2001-02) episodes were only around 40-42 minutes, and in the case of one episode ("Scary Monsters") just 38 minutes.

I've been surpised and then not too surprised when I've looked at the running times of episodes on a UK ratings system website. It's really shocked me how short episodes of US programmes are now. Episodes of Supernatural when they've been rated, have had running times of as few as 37 minutes. You'd think there would be around 7 minutes of deleted scenes for every episode which has a running time of 37 minutes. That hasn't been the case.

I'm assuming it's all to do with advertisements. It's sad really. I know there's that saying that quantity doesn't mean quality, but to me an episode of a programme having a running time of between 45 and 50 minutes is good value for money.

UK hour-long programmes used to have running times of around 50-51 minutes but are now around 46 minutes...because there are more adverts. It's really getting on my nerves. But sadly I don't think there will be any change and we will be stuck with shorter hour-long programmes and more adverts.

What I don't like with TV these days

I can't stand reality TV shows. There are not many I will watch. I don't like the vastly overrated CSI franchise. The Law and Order shows on the other hand are quality shows which get overshadowed by the CSI series and the other CBS crime series like Criminal Minds and Cold Case.

There are also far too many adverts in one hour shows on UK stations. What also gets on my nerves are when the end credits are talked over and squashed up so other programmes can be advertised.

Auf Wiedersehen Pet

If I were asked what is my favourite TV comedy drama of them all I would without a doubt say it was Auf Wiedersehen Pet, but only the two series from the 1980s which were shown on ITV originally. The series was brought back by the BBC in the late 90's/early 00's. The first series in Nevada was the best but I felt it just wasn't the same without the actor who played carpenter Wayne. There were a further one or two series with a special one-off episode. The actor Pat Roach passed away before filming started on the one-off series finale. I prefer to remember the good old days in the 80's with the Magnificent Seven were in Germany, Wolverhampton, Derby, Newcastle and Spain. Those were the best episodes.

A few months ago now in a UK DVD magazine was a review of the season one DVD set on Region 2. The episode they chose as the highlight of the season was "Passport to Murder", which I have to agree with...if you don't count the feature length pilot episode. That was also a Hart to Hart classic.

I had been looking forward to watching this one. The clips in the title sequence are a great preview. It lived up to expectations. I know I'm nit picking, but apart from a couple of slow and daft scenes the episode moved along quickly and finished with a thrilling car chase.

I didn't really like this episode much. Although it had a classic ending with Higgins mistakenly thinking Magnum was talking about something serious. I won't say any more, as if you haven't seen "Moscow to Maui" yet, I'll be spoiling you.

As for the episode itself, it was alright but nothing really good. Just an a below average to average episode. The ending of the story about the Russian couple and the defection from Russia was nice.

I thought there were one too many diversions in this episode with Magnum trying to get to the Russian defector's girlfriend at the holiday park. It was one of the best parts of the episode, with Higgins talking to the older Russian while Magnum made his way to where the Russian defector's girlfriend was, while Rick created a diversion, making himself get escorted away by the younger Russian man.

A good twist was that the 'third man' was in fact not one of the Russians but a hotel detective. That was another of the best scenes in this episode, Magnum and his kind of seminar in front of the projector screen, getting the mickey taken out of him by Rick and TC. I do love this aspect of Magnum p.i., the humour.

To sum the episode up, dull-ish main plot but classic humour and humourous scenes.

I didn't particularly like this episode much. After the excellent "J. Digger Doyle" episode this was a below average episode for the season 1 finale.

I didn't know Marcia Wallace, who is probably best known for voicing Edna Krabappel in The Simpsons, was in this episode until I watched it. She wasn't annoying. I just didn't like the story overall, which felt like one or two other prior episodes in the first season.

The Hawaii ironman competition towards the end of the episode was good, although it was a shame Magnum didn't end up completing the race.

To sum up season 1...well I'd give it 8 out of 10 overall. There have been many good episodes and one or two classics. There have only been two or three duff episodes. I've very much enjoyed season 1.

I had thought it was another actress (Pamela Susan Shoop) playing Billy Joe Bob's sister in this episode, based on my memory of when I first tested out my Magnum p.i. season 2 boxset. However when I watched the episode in full a few weeks ago I realised it wasn't her. I wasn't disappointed as the actress who played the role did it very well. And it was clever how they made you think she was dead, because it was very convincing, what happened in the first scene when she was pursued by the car whilst out jogging.

James Whitmore Jr who played Billy Joe Bob was very good. One minute he was calm and then he was in angry mode as he searched for the people who had killed his sister.

The end credits of the season premiere were different, in that I think (if I remember right) it was just James Whitmore Jr seen in the clips shown (of him flying TC's helicopter over to the villain's island.

I wouldn't call this episode a classic but it was a good enough episode.
