Holiday

It appears I'm finally ready to leave for my holiday, although not completely better - my doctor assures me I should be well enough to fly... which will have to do... although they're not quite the words of comfort I was hoping he'd utter! Thanks especially to Ela and Elly who kept checking in on me... sorry about all the complaining

Should be fun in California, not sure if Ren's (my hubby) family have the internet, so I may be able to pop on every once in awhile, (if he's off socialising with his family and I choose to be anti-social)... but if not - I will see you all in 3 weeks.

Hope everybody enjoys their new shows, I'm gutted I'll miss most of the premieres of my favourite shows, oh - and try not to blog too much or I'll never catch up with it all!

Yay for sunny holidays, see you all soon,

Here, incase you're bored, have some holiday music from a scary looking Madonna, Some French Taunts from Monty Python, and some Funny moments from Buffy & Friends

Bye For Now

End of Summer TV!

Since I'm off on holiday (hopefully) next week for 3 weeks I thought I'd do an end of Summer TV Blog, a final summary! Breaking the new shows I tried to watch over the last few months into completely inappropriate categories

The Good

Firefly - Loved this show, it was over far too quickly. The characters (esp. Jayne!) make the show for me, they're funny without it seeming forced, the relationships are amazing... oh and plus! The fact the show is so quotable helps to make it awesome for me!

Veronica Mars - Wasn't hooked, but I enjoyed this show a lot. The Season 2 finale was amazing, and I actually liked the main character which doesn't happen too often! It was an entertaining, and light hearted show, definitely worth watching for me, glad I got round to it.

Chuck - Again, not hooked on this, but it's very entertaining and incredibly easy to watch. I love Casey especially (maybe it's just Adam Baldwin in general, swoon!) and can definitely see me rewatching this season, and watching the new one. Plus - Captain Awesome

The Ok

Damages - I really liked this show, it got me hooked quite quickly... but don't think I'd re-watch it which is why it's been lumped in the "ok" group!

Jericho - Loved the characters in this, and still think this show deserved more time, but the stories weren't always there to keep me hooked.

Six Feet Under - The Season 5 finale was awesome, and Michael C. Hall was brilliant (As always!) - but it had some slow middle few seasons for me...

Psych - Won't have time to finish watching this show this summer, only seen a few episodes, I think it's very funny, but I'm not so hooked it won't wait until my Christmas break from Uni to finish watching!

How I Met Your Mother - Good sitcom, definitely made me laugh and I'm sure I'll watch an episode here and there... but it's a sitcom so I'm not hooked!

The Ugly

Weeds - Ok so not really ugly, but it's my least favourite of all the shows I watched over the summer and something had to go here in the ugly group. It's not a bad show, I'm just not interested in how it continues.

Sarah Connor Chronicles - Again, not ugly... just not for me. I've been told it gets better, but I was bored and uninterested after 2 episodes so I'm going to put it aside and come back to it (maybe over Christmas).

-----

Aw, it's the end of summer viewing updates - Never mind! It had to end sometime. I just realised how many TV shows I've been watching... must remember to go out more! Hope everybody is okay!

Challenge #9, Final Part! Best Shows and Episodes (Emmy Inspired!)

The Challenge: Inspired by the Emmy's, What would your favourites of all time be, and why. This is the final blog!

Part 1: Best Actors/Actresses in a Comedy Series (Done)

Part 2: Best Actors/Actresses in a Drama Series (Done)

Part 3: Best Writing/Music in a Comedy/Drama Series (Done)

Part 4: Outstanding Shows and Episodes in a Comedy/Drama Series (This Blog)

This is going to be a really hard blog to write, and is very much influenced by what I've recently been watching. I'm so fickle which is why I'm so bad at countdowns, because my opinion changes so much, so quickly that by the time I post this, I will probably not even agree with myself. Ah well, here's my final awards...

Outstanding Comedy Series

Nominees: Friends, Reaper, Pushing Daisies & South Park

Winner: Friends

The only sitcom I can now sit and watch episode after episode and not get bored (Although I haven't in awhile I have to say!). Most sitcoms I can watch a few episodes in a row but I'd need a break from it after that, but I just don't get fed up of the characters in Friends. Probably a bit of nostalgia for me as well, I liked this when I was growing up and have fond memories of watching it with a close friend of the family (she's like my godmother, and completely awesome!). So - I could be biased, plus more recent comedy shows just aren't my thing, I tend to like drama more these days. But back to the point - Friends is a good show, it was popular for a reason, and while the latter seasons (esp: S9 & S10) will never be as good for me as the early ones, it's entertaining, easy to watch, has some of the most memorable characters and most importantly (for a comedy!) funny!

Outstanding Drama Series

Nominees: Supernatural, Dexter, Angel & Bones

Winner: Supernatural

This was a much harder choice, and even just picking my nominees was near on impossible! I ended up going for Supernatural, because it's my current favourite, I never get tired of watching it and I love the storylines so much. I'm sure I could argue myself out of my decision, because this show isn't always perfect - but it's got something special for me (which of course could be the good looking men!). The balance of creepiness, action, humour and the always fantastic Dean (Jensen Ackles) - not to mention the awesome music, Carry on my Wayward Son being a particular favourite (here have a looky at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=al12WO5x23w) just put this ahead of the other shows. I love the relationships and all the characters (even when they aren't the two main brothers) - so for me it's my Outstanding Drama Series.

Outstanding Drama Episode

Teeny Tiny Disclaimer: I've purposely not included any episodes I talked about last blog (for the best writing in an episode), even though a few of them would cross over well. I find though, some of my best episodes of my favourite shows aren't necessarily the ones that have been written the best, but rather, they usually have good developments for the characters I like. So - I'm sure there may be better written episodes than my nominees, but these are just some of my favourite episodes...

Nominees:

Show: Supernatural, Episode: What is and What Should Never Be

Show: Heroes, Episode: Five Years Gone

Show: Angel, Episode: Are You Now or Have You Ever Been

Show: Bones, Episode: Aliens in a Spaceship

Winner: Bones - Aliens in a Spaceship

This category is hard, because this Bones episode is brilliant, and I love it - but it's not my favourite episode across all shows (I don't even know how I'd go about picking that!). This is just one example of what I think is an amazing episode to watch. It was great to see all the different relationships/dynamics and how the team worked trying to save Brennan and Hodgins. There are loads of different aspects of this episode that were really good - but the reason it's my top pick is just because of Booth - the way he tries to find Brennan, he doesn't give up and neither does she - it's great TV.

Outstanding Comedy Episode

Again I've not picked any episodes that were in my last blog, although they would work well here too! Plus I've included episodes that may be construed as cheating, because Buffy/Angel aren't technically comedy shows - but they have comedic elements and the episode was a comedy episode so I thought it counted by my criteria!

Nominees:

Show: Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Episode: Tabula Rasa

Show: Friends, Episode: The One Where Everybody Finds Out

Show: Reaper, Episode: Unseen

Show: Angel, Episode: Spin The Bottle

Winner: Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Tabula Rasa

Two of my nominees were basically the same concept, Tabula Rasa and Spin the Bottle. To be honest, I don't know which I prefer, so I just picked one, and seen as I've been obsessing over Angel I picked the Buffy one. This is more a joint win for me. I love this concept, not particularly original - but it's always funny to see the characters you love behaving differently (be it they don't remember who they are - Tabula Rasa, or they return to being teenagers - Spin The Bottle). These episodes are some of the funniest I've seen and they also act like a bonus for fans of the show who understand why it's funny to see their characters behave differently. Awesome concepts, Yay! Although again - not sure I'd say they were my favourite comedy episodes across all shows... that's just too broad a question!

------

Okay that's the end of the Emmy-Inspired Blogs - they've lasted awhile, and been fun to write, but it'll be great to try and write something a bit new. Ideas always welcome! Hope you're all okay and had fun reading these last few blogs - even if you didn't agree!

Challenge #9 Part 3: All Time Favourite Writing and Music in TV (Emmy Inspired!)

The Challenge: Inspired by the Emmy's, What would your favourites of all time be, and why. This is Part 3 of 4 Blogs!

Part 1: Best Actors/Actresses in a Comedy Series (Done)

Part 2: Best Actors/Actresses in a Drama Series (Done)

Part 3: Best Writing/Music in a Comedy/Drama Series (This Blog)

Part 4: Outstanding Shows and Episodes in a Comedy/Drama SeriesWriting for a Comedy Series

Writing for a Comedy Series

Nominees:

Show: The Simpsons, Episode: Bart Vs. Austrailia, Written By: Josh Weinstein & Bill Oakley

Show: Pushing Daisies, Episode: Pie-Lette, Written By: Bryan Fuller

Show: Friends. Episode: The One with the Embryos, Written By: Amy Toomin & Jill Condon

Show: South Park, Episode: Good Times With Weapons, Written By: Trey Parker

Winner: South Park - Good Times with Weapons, Written By: Trey Parker

I Love this episode of South Park, South Park on the surface can seem lewd and crude and lots of other rhyming words - but it's my guilty pleasure! Ignoring the fart and other slightly more childish humour, this show can sometimes be incredibly funny. When it pokes fun at other shows, or celebrities, sometimes religion (namely Scientology) or sometimes political topics it shows what I think are its better aspects - but only if people take it as the joke it is, this show is entertaining - the episodes aren't written to hurt anyone. In any case, this episode didn't really insult anyone and it had me laughing all the way through - admittedly, it's not me at my most mature, but it's funny writing. Cartman as a ninja, Butters as Professor Chaos... and Cartman's "Wardrobe Malfunction" are just very entertaining when I'm not in a serious mood! This episode doesn't get old for me.

Writing for a Drama Series

Nominees:

Show: Grey's Anatomy, Episode: Losing My Religion, Written By: Shonda Rimes

Show: Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Episode: Hush, Written By: Joss Whedon

Show: Firefly, Episode: Out of Gas, Written By: Tim Minear

Show: Supernatural, Episode: All Hell Breaks Loose, Written By: Sera Gamble/Kim Manners

Show: Dexter, Episode: Dexter, Written By: Timothy Schlattmann

Winner: Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Hush, Written by Joss Whedon

Far too many nominees I know - but I've re-written this 4 times now, picking a different one of my nominees as my winner each time, this one was a really tough choice and I think all my nominees are fantastically well written episodes (although not all of them are my all time favourite episodes, see my next Emmy blog for that!). The reason I finally decided on this one, as I've said, is not because it's my favourite episode (it's good but probably still not one of my top ten episodes of Buffy for me), but rather it was so well written. It has so many different elements that work together so well to make it such a popular and well known episode. It's really original and it goes from scary to funny and then back again so quickly with it still seeming normal and not forced.

Outstanding Music in Opening Credits

Just want to say my nominees are based on good songs that have been used well for the opening credits of a TV show, the nominees haven't been based on a good opening sequence that has its own 'theme tune' of sorts (ie: Angel couldn't be a nominee by my rules). Basically, it's the music not the content of the opening sequence being judged!

Nominees: Friends: The Rembrandts - "I'll Be There For You" , Smallville: Remy Zero - "Somebody Save Me" , One Tree Hill: Gavin DeGraw - "I Don't Wanna be"

Winner: The Rembrandts - "I'll be there for you" (Opening credits of Friends)

Click here for: "I'll be there for you" Music Video

Click here for: Friends opening title Sequence

If you haven't seen the actual music video (as well as the opening credits of Friends), watch it - it's hilarious with the cast of Friends causing havoc, but also - it's a good song! I love this opening, it's probably one of the few title sequences I don't need to skip through. I remember reading that they filmed the Friends opening sequence (the whole: Night, Sofa, Dancing, Water Fountain thingy) when it was really late and they were all freezing (of course at that point they weren't getting paid a million per episode so probably didn't complain too much!). It's an awesome opening, with great music for a really good show - so was a clear winner for me.

Choices Choices (And: Buffy/Veronica Mars catch up!)

This really is just a tiny update, mostly because I haven't slept all night and need to do something to stop me going crazy so here goes (sorry if this makes no sense at all!).

---------

Help!

My plan is to get a new icon (As great as dancing Dean was... I think I needed a change) - but I've no clue what to change to. Just incase he's missed... here.... Have this as a reminder:

I have a temporary icon which is a clip (that is far too long for an icon) from the episode Disharmony (in Angel). It's one of my favourite scenes, look at Angel smile and dance Yayyy! I couldn't cut it short, But I'll be changing it to a proper one soon - suggestions of people or scenes ... or anything would be very much welcome and appreciated!! I'll probably stick to animated icons, unless otherwise convinced! Help!

EDIT: In the short time since I posted Ela suggested Angel dancing - and I LOVE that idea, so my icon is now decided, thank you, everybody dance!! Oh and for those who wanted to see the temporary one that is now gone (what nobody?!) here you go:

-------

What I've been Watching

I'm now about half way through Season 2 of Veronica Mars, it is growing on me. I love Weevil and Veronica's weird relationship, although I wish Weevil was in it more; but it's not so bad... as always I think Veronica and her Dad are hilarious I thought the first episode was really epic and I'm curious to find out exactly what is going to happen with the school bus storyline. Not hooked - but enjoying it! Although I miss the dog, he's hardly featured in this series so far!!

I've also just re-watched Buffy (Season 4 entirely, and a teeny bit of Season 5 before I got distracted by my friend Elly bringing Veronica Mars over for me to watch). Have to say I enjoyed rewatching Season 4 of Buffy, even if it's not my favourite season.

Favourite Episodes of Buffy (S4): Who doesn't like Hush, but my other favourites were probably: Who are you and Something Blue: - This episode is so funny, It deserves quotes!

(Xander waves his hands in front of the now blind Giles' face)
Giles: Stop whatever you're doing! Your hands smell like fruit roll-ups!

Buffy: You're a pig, Spike.
Spike: Yeah, well, I'm not the one who wanted "Wind Beneath My Wings" for the first dance.

Spike: How long am I gonna live once I tell you?
Giles: Spike, we have no intention of killing a harmless, um, creature

My least favourite from Season 4 was probably Where the Wild Things Are . Or maybe that Jonathan episode (which is weird I don't remember disliking it before, it just annoyed me this time around).

-----

Sorry for the ramble, but hopefully me and Elly (wow two mentions in one blog, lucky you!) will be posting the 3rd Emmy blog soon, and I fancy doing some kind of countdown of something or other - haven't decided yet!

Hope everybody's okay!

My Recent Reviews

8.0 Great
Michaela's Zoo Babies
Avg Score: 8.63    Total Ratings: 3    Total Reviews: 1
This is a really great wildlife documentary that travels round lots of different zoos and wildlife parks in the UK to witness new births, and struggles that newborn animals may face.

Admittedly, I started watching this because I wanted to see cute baby animals (which I did, so no complaints there!) - but it turned out to be a really great show. Unlike a lot of wildlife shows, this one seemed to balance the cute-ness well with the realism that some shows either neglect to mention or smother you in.

This show had a range of animals, some common, some endangered, some big, some small - and it was interesting to watch. The show talks to the keepers, and showed how much the staff try to help animals rear their babies without interfering... but the show never came across too "heavy", it was kept light hearted, and made you engaged with what happened to the animals that each episode followed. Definitely worth watching, although it's not all baby lions & sunshine - there are the sadder moments too - but if you're a fan of animals, want to know what really goes on behind the scenes when animals are born in zoos or just want to watch some really cute newborns - I'd definitely recommend watching this.

8.4 Great
Lost

I preferred the early seasons of Lost, mostly because while I do appreciate a good mystery - I feel like Lost has so many loose ends it needs to tie up, I don't even know where it would start. The show started off very original, and made me want to watch more, it fell apart somewhere in the middle for me, but with this last season, it's starting to get back to what made me like it in the first place.

I do think all the characters are great (in their own very different ways!), with my favourites being Hurley (bringing a much needed laugh throughout the show), Jin (just awesome!) and Sayid (who kicks arse!). I like the flash backs and forwards, I do think they add something to the show... although it can be very frustrating when you want to know what happened to a certain character and the next episode is just flashbacks for a completely different person!

I think I would have been better off waiting to watch this after it finishes airing because I could easily sit and watch all of this show (episode after episode) - it becomes compulsive viewing - and I'm sticking with it because I need to know how it ends. That's not to say some storylines haven't disappointed me, because they have (won't mention any spoilers) - but there are some amazing twists in there too.... and I expect there will be many more good and bad twists yet to come. Worth watching - but it'll be very frustrating to people who like to know exactly what's going on!

8.9 Great
House
Avg Score: 9.27    Total Ratings: 23019    Total Reviews: 1278
I think House is a good show, it has something for everyone, be it a medical mystery, a good bit of sarcasm or interesting characters. House (Hugh Laurie) makes the show, without question for me... which you'd expect what with the show being named after him. He's funny to watch, smart, arrogant and of course incredibly anti-social. He's such an unusual main character, not a happy, perky normal TV personality you'd expect to carry a show - but it works because of that reason. The episodes which focus on how he became the way he is, and also reveal the hidden sides to House are some of my favourites.

The other characters are all pretty interesting too (the best for me probably being Cuddy, Foreman & Wilson) - although I prefer the relationships in the first 3 seasons, as the new characters in season 4 tended to annoy me. But it's not all about the characters! The medical stories are usually quite interesting, and it's always fun to see how they get solved. On a slight negative, the show tends to follow the same structure, you know what you're getting... pretty much: 1. Medical Condition 2. Wrong Diagnosis 3. Wrong Diagnosis 4. House breaks some rules and has some painkillers 5. House saves the day but remains unhappy. Not that I'm complaining about it - it's a formula that works, and there are exceptions to the rule. It doesn't spoil the show, but if you get bored easily, you should focus on the characters rather than the structure to the show!

I think this isn't necessarily easy watching, but it's interesting watching - as I've said, House as a character is brilliant and makes the show work, the medical conditions and how they're solved are usually good watching too - so if you haven't already, give it a try!

8.8 Great
Heroes
Avg Score: 9.27    Total Ratings: 27678    Total Reviews: 1238
This show is really entertaining to watch, it's not always the most complex stories - but it rarely bores you! The premise is a good one, normal people discovering they have powers (albeit not the most original idea!) - the characters quickly grow on you and the storylines are (usually) really well carried out.

Some of the characters are really interesting to watch, for instance Peter & his slightly more evil version, Sylar. You get to see the two characters interact in the future in one particular episode, and these are some of my favourite moments of the show. You see Peter in the future and he's so much darker than the character you're used to, which is a brilliant change (I say keep him that way!!). You also get to see Sylar, a villain I love! He's brilliant, dark, twisted & smart - just how I like my villains. The show is almost worth it just for him! Most of the characters are quite serious and you get invested in whats happening to them, but it's always nice for a show to have a funny character just to lighten the mood every once in awhile. That's where Hiro comes in! Hiro is a brilliant character because he just embraces his destiny when he finds out he has a power - the show just wouldn't be the same without him. There are so many characters, I won't talk about them all, but needless to say, they are all pretty interesting and thankfully they all seem to have been developed well... which makes you want to stick with the show even when the storylines were slightly lacking (as per season 2).

This show took a bit of a dive in the second season (it still wasn't terrible, but it lacked something from season 1). However, it's still worth watching and I have high hopes that the third season will be even better than both the last 2 seasons. Well worth watching, can't wait for it to continue!

9.1 Superb
Dexter
Avg Score: 9.08    Total Ratings: 9420    Total Reviews: 285
I loved the concept of the show before I had even seen it, and I'm so glad it ended up living up to my expectations! This show is amazing to watch, it has originality, dark humour , great stories and of course a lot of violence!! I've read the books, and actually prefer the series, mostly because of Michael C. Hall. To me, Michael C. Hall is Dexter - down to his small mannerisms, the dead-pan remarks he makes & all the stuff in between. Dexter as a character is brilliant, the way he fakes humanity, tries to blend in with everyone is explained and shown in such an amazing way. Dexter follows a code, only killing those who deserve it - but that doesn't make him the good guy... Part of what makes him such an interesting character is the fact that he tries to follow the code; but a lot of the time you don't know why - because he shows such contempt for most people (With a few exceptions, Rita, Deb etc) and Harry (who gave him the code) ends up being less than trustworthy. You'd think with such an amazing main character the other characters would suffer - but that's not so (in my opinion). You have other characters to balance out Dexter's emotionally stunted behaviours, there's Rita (Julie Benz) - who manages to stand out even opposite a character like Dexter, and you can't help but feel sorry for her character. Angel & Masuka bring a much lighter comedic element to the show (just to make sure it's not all doom and gloom!) and Doakes is a kick-arse cop that knows something isn't right about Dexter. The dynamic between all these characters just makes the show awesome to watch, then throw in the storylines (both small, ie: Dexter's kills, and large, ie: The Ice Truck Killer) - and it makes it one of my favourite shows. This isn't light hearted and easy watching, but it's worth watching, it's dark, smart, funny & entertaining. One of the best shows on at the moment!
