Two Years Ago, Today...

It was two years ago, today, that I decided to become an active member of TV.com. During the TV Tome days, I was Editor of 3 shows, all of which, I lost, during the transition to TV.com. There is a very strong possibility that that was due to a system glitch (TV.com have a system glitch?! Imagine that!), but, to give them the benefit of a doubt, it could very possibly have been that I submitted my transition request a little late - It's just been too long ago to remember, for an old guy like me. Whatever the case, I was angry, frustrated, and bitter about that for about 6 months or so. But I decided, 2 years ago, today, to get re-involved, and made up my mind to earn back the shows I'd lost. I was successful with only one of them, but I have - In the above-mentioned two years - Become the Editor of 8 other shows, and gone from Level 1, to Level 20, which was more than enough to make up for the loss of the other two shows. I've turned TV.com into a kind of hobby, and, despite it's being quite frustrating, and even stressful, at times, it's a lot of fun. It's also very gratifying to know that my work has been published, and is seen by thousands of people, every day. I intend to keep on keeping on, with my guides, working to make them all better, though, with my time divided, now, with so many to look after, I'm working somewhat slower than I was, 2 years ago. But I hope that all who see them, approve.

Man! This Is Fun!!

Well, even though I’ve never really been away… I’m back. I was pretty sad for 3 months or so, but I feel much better now. When I logged on, on January 3, I was up to 13% (How I got that, I don’t know), and, after doing a little research, and studying the rules and regs, I added a couple of shows to ‘My Shows’, and… Whaddaya know?!! The next day, I was up to 16%!! A few more additions to ‘My Shows’, and some ratings, and the next day, I was up to 30%!! By now, I’m saying to myself: ‘Man! This is fun!!’. Today, I was up to 38%, and I posted my ‘About Me’ article. Can’t wait to see what I’m up to, tomorrow!

The Hawaiian Connection (1)
Avg Score: 4.06    Total Ratings: 34    Total Reviews: 1
I have to count this 3-parter as a single episode, which falls into my Top 10 at the #10 position, despite the fact that Redd Foxx seems to be a little off his stride, with his performance. These episodes came toward the end of the series, and it's just possible that Foxx had other things on his mind – Like getting out of 'Sanford And Son', and going on to do his own variety series – Which affected his performance. But, this 'mini-series-within-a-series' is very different, and it's a lot of fun to watch, due, in part, to it's Love Boat-like guest cast of familiar TV faces. There's Sheldon Leonard of 'Big Eddie', Greg Morris of 'Mission Impossible', David Huddleston of 'Petrocelli', Theodore Wilson of 'That's My Mama', and James Gregory of 'Barney Miller'. And, as if that weren't enough, we have the voluptuous Barbara Rhoades – Later, of 'Soap', and 'Busting Loose' – As a ditzy gun moll, Pat Paulsen as an even ditzier Cop, and, with frequent Guest Stars Frank Nelson ("A-yyyesssss") and Fritzi Burr thrown in for good measure. And, of course, what made-in-Hawaii TV episode would be complete, without an appearance of Don Ho? Saul Turteltaub and Bernie Orenstein (Who, incidentally, puts in a brief Cameo, as a Honolulu Cabbie) put together an excellent script, but Alan Rafkin, it seems, should have tried a little harder, to get better performances out of the Actors – Especially Foxx, whose performance is lackluster, at best. But, the story, itself, the Guest Cast, and the Hawaiian locale make up for most of it's short-comings, and some good laughs help out a lot. In fact, the scene at the pool – After Fred asks the Japanese-Brooklynite what he's going to tell his friends, in Tokyo – Is the best laugh in the whole show. Years ago, I edited all 3 episodes into one seamless, 60+-minute 'mini-movie', and that's the best way to watch it. But, all-in-all, these are good episodes any way you watch them.

Donna Pops the Question

I would have to put this one at #3 on my list of favorite episodes, if for no other reason than Redd Foxx's extraordinary performance. Laugh-wise, he gets off some good zingers, in this one – Particularly: "Bubba… Get the hell outta here!" and when he tells Esther that Lamont is "Up there in Las Vegas, playing that dice game that they named after your face.". And, his come-back to Donna's Mother, towards the end of the episode – "If I'm a snake and weasel, then you're a… Wonderful woman, my dear!", is perfect comic timing if ever there was any. But it's not Foxx's comic performance that puts this one in my Top 3… It's his dramatic performance. His lovely and touching soliloquy, where he asks Elizabeth's permission to marry Donna, is absolutely terrific. I've seen it countless times, and it never fails to tug at my heart-strings, and put a little 'choke' in my throat. It's a powerful dramatic performance that one normally would not expect from an Actor like Foxx. All-in-all, this is a very well-done episode. Writers Turteltaub and Orenstein put together an excellent script, James Sheldon's direction is right on par, and this one deserves to be near the top of the stack.

This one is the absolute top of the heap. My #1 most favorite episode of this, or – For that matter – Any other sitcom. This is one of the few times that another Performer overshadows Foxx, and Don Bexley – As Fred’s rotund best friend, Bubba – Steals the show, here, with just 5 words: “I want my Daddy’s records!” Foxx has some good lines in this one, that get some good laughs – Particularly: “Pot belly”, "Personally, I think you're a fruitcake", and “Let him drive, and leave the drinkin’ to us” – But Bexley outdoes him, and then some. I try to catch it every time it runs, and then re-watch, and re-watch, and re-watch again, those the seven times that Bexley utters those now-famous words, spoken in his inimitable style. It never gets old, or fails to make me laugh.

Lamont as Othello
Avg Score: 7.85    Total Ratings: 22    Total Reviews: 1
This one is in my top 10, but I haven’t decided exactly where it lands. It’s one of the few really well-written (Arguably, THE best-written) scripts of the series, and the Performers make the most of it, especially Foxx. Writer Ilunga Adell covers all the bases, and there’s not a ‘loose end’ in sight. The whole episode is hilarious, but there are some scenes that are really outstanding, laugh-wise. When Fred and Bubba sneak up to the house, to see who Lamont’s ‘hot date’ is, and Bubba has a ‘big one’, himself, with the shock of what he’s witnessed; At Marilyn’s home, when Fred goes into the bedroom, to watch TV, and finds Marilyn’s Parents in bed, asleep; And, when Fred confronts Marilyn’s Father, later, over Fred’s being a “strange man” are all side-splitters. Catch this one if you can. It’s quality TV comedy – Both Writing, and Performing.

The Surprise Party

This one comes in at #2 on my list of favorite episodes. This was Foxx’s re-appearance on the show, after a several-episode absence over a salary dispute, and he’s funnier than ever. It was a great relief to have Foxx back. Whitman Mayo did quite well, in covering for Foxx, and, though he held his own, for several episodes, let’s face it… He’s no Redd Foxx. Redd delivers some of his funniest lines, in this episode, and, some of the scenes – Such as: At the bar, where Fred pours his heart out to the Bartender; When he comes home drunk, later, and declares his intention to move back to St. Louis; And, the morning after, where Lamont straightens things out, with his very hung-over Pop – Are absolutely priceless. Whether it’s the first time you’ve seen it, or the 50th, (I’ve seen it so many times, I can recite the dialogue, word-for-word), the laughs are still there.

About Me

bohn007
Dear Fellow TV Fans: Allow me to introduce myself. My name is David Bohn, and I have been watching TV for quite some time. In fact, I have faint memories of watching ‘Bat Masterson’ from as early as 1958. Science Fiction shows seem to hold the fondest memories of my childhood. My favorite of those, was ‘Lost In Space’, but ‘Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea’, ‘The Time Tunnel’, and ‘Land Of The Giants’ (All of which, coincidentally, were Irwin Allen productions), were at least ‘semi-regulars’ for me, back in the mid-60s. I didn’t watch a lot of TV, during my teen years, what with schoolwork, friends, and dating taking up most of my time, but young adulthood brought a new interest. Marriage, a steady job, and a home of my own, all presented their own challenges and stresses, but I found escape, in the evenings, with the ‘Magic Box’ in my living room. The ‘Cop Shows’ held most of my attention, in the mid-to-late 70s. ‘Baretta’, and ‘Starsky And Hutch’ (In that order) were my favorites, from that period, but ‘Hawaii Five-O’, and, the short-timers ‘Joe Forrester’, and ‘Caribe’ would often include me in their audiences. I usually found time for some of the ‘P.I.’ shows, like ‘Cannon’, ‘Barnaby Jones’, and, occasionally, ‘Mannix’, and I went back to my SciFi roots, when I became a huge fan of ‘Kolchak – The Night Stalker’, during it’s short run, in ’75 and ‘76. I never missed ‘Movin’ On’, which became one of my all-time favorites, and, as silly as it may seem, I even watched – And enjoyed – ‘When Things Were Rotten’. TV, in general, for me, began to take a downturn, with the 80s, and I watched less and less of it, as time progressed. I kept my hand in, with such shows as ‘CHiPs', ‘The Dukes Of Hazzard’, and ‘The A-Team’, but there was little else that I was really interested in. Some of the ‘big’ episodes – Such as the ‘Who Shot J.R.’ episode(s) of ‘Dallas’, and the ‘Goodbye, Farewell, And Amen’ episode of ‘M*A*S*H’, drew my attention, as well as that of a hundred million or so other people. My #1 most favorite TV show, ever – ‘Sanford And Son’ – Reached that status retro-actively. I never watched the show when it was new, but I started watching late-night re-runs of it, on one of the local stations, back in about 1979, and was immediately hooked. It has since gotten to the point that, if I don’t see at least one ‘Sanford And Son’ episode per day, I tend to get a little down in the dumps. Similarly, ‘McHale’s Navy’ – Thanks to syndication – Holds the #2 spot on my list of all-time favorites, and, further down the list, ‘Dragnet’ (The late-60s revival), and ‘Adam-12’. ‘Dallas’ comes in at #3 on my list. I became interested in the Ewing saga, when I started watching re-runs of the series, in the mid-80s. I started watching new episodes of the show, regularly, in ’86, and watched it through to the end, in ’91. In ’04 & ’05, I watched the entire run of the series on the ‘Soap’ network, from first episode, to last, and, I gotta admit… J.R. Ewing has become one of my greatest TV heroes. It almost seems un-American not to know The Ricardos, The Cartwrights, The Taylors, The Clampetts, The Bradys, or those ‘Seven Stranded Castaways’. Here, again, these good Americans didn’t become a part of my life until after they went into syndication, but I know and love them all, and I believe I could hold my own in a trivia contest with the Experts on those TV Families. Aside from a few notable exceptions – Like ‘Roseanne’, and ‘Walker – Texas Ranger’, both of which I watched with some regularity – I had little use for prime time TV, from about the mid-80s, on, and I began to depend on syndicated re-runs, shown on independent cable stations. I’ll watch pretty much any action or comedy series made before about 1986. I tend to lean toward the obscure, and it saddens me, to think of some of the short-lived TV gems of the 60s through the 80s, that I missed. Ohh, to be able to travel back in time, with a VCR, and record ‘Branded’, ‘The Guns Of Will Sonnett’ (“No brag… Just fact.”), ‘Toma’, ‘Matt Helm’, ‘The Cop And The Kid’, ‘Life With Lucy’… I could go on and on. I could have cared less about either of the spin-offs from ‘Sanford And Son’ – ‘Grady’, or ‘The Sanford Arms’ – When they were new, but ohh, how I wish I could see them, today! Alas… The less popular a series was, the less likely it is to be rebroadcast, or released on DVD. Though I’ve only scratched the surface, I hope I’ve given you an idea of what kind of TV fan I am. It should be evident, from the above, that I’m a little (Okay… A LOT) old fashioned. I’ve given you my Top 3, but the other 7 of my Top 10, would take quite a bit of time, with so many to choose from, and I shudder to think about how long it would take to decide on the other 97 of my top 100. In short… You can keep your ‘Friends’, and ‘Will And Grace’, and ‘CSI’, and ‘Law And Order’, and I’ll take my ‘Gunsmoke’, ‘Mr. Ed’, ‘The Twilight Zone’, and ‘Green Acres’ – Or any one of hundreds more like them – Any day of the week . Sincerely, David C. Bohn ‘bohn007’
