The show has potential but dropped the ball from the get go. The show really deserves a 3 but gets a few more points for hope of better episodes to come. What went wrong? Well, let's go the non-superficial route first. The characters are amazing. The plot was solid and what I was expecting. There is the first mistake, it was what I was expecting. If you like predictability, then this episode is for you. Me, I like a little surprise now and again. Let's go back to the characters, they're great...the actors and acting, yeah, not so much. I generally don't care about bad acting if the characters and plot make up for it or the chicks are smoking hot (We're all superficial so don't boo me for stating truth...look at BabeWatch). Well, they got halfway there.
Let's go to the plot some more. The major complaint is that it is very rushed. With that, I agree. The network or producers gave us the action porn. I tried to watch the episode once more in case I missed any details that may be intriguing. That didn't work out so well, there was a lot of fast-forwarding. There may have been great dialogue but stale delivery made me skip the talking the second time around.
I can not emphasize how unbelievably fast paced the pilot is. The key word in that last sentence is 'unbelievably'. The network and/or producers wasted a lot of time trying to establish the cast that they neglected to remember that the audience needs to be emotionally invested in them. If they had taken the time to explore the character depth more, It would've been amazing. Ideally, the pilot could've been drawn out into 2-3 episodes. The first ending with Jaime looking finding out about the implants. That's my ideal, but they should have spent more time with Jaime coping with her changes. Even learning to use her powers instead of the instant adaptation. I don't believe all it takes to get use to the new superhuman abilities is crying in the shower and then you can get use to discovering heightened senses and pre-programmed kung fu skills by going to have sex.
Other gripes: Let's talk about the villain confrontation. Jaime had her friggin' hand broke. BROKEN. That part is human and not bionic, the stuff has to hurt. yet she manages to cling to the fence links with both hands????? wtf.
Overall, the show seemed like a Buffy wannabe with the whole superpowered girl vs council of men who want to control her for their agenda and the little sister angst. Actually, on that thought...they could use taking a page from Joss or better yet, try to get Joss to take over. He's proven he does well with superpowered women and hey, at least this time the girl with superpowers isn't a teen.
My opinion of the show isn't set in stone. I'll try to catch a few more eps to give it a chance. However, unlike Reaper, I'm not going to make it a priority or let it take up space on my dvr. They're going to have to up their game if they want to survive.

The crew may have found a way to get word to their loved ones. This episode is filled with hope only to be let down time and time again. I love it. First, we find a wormhole. Oh no, the wormhole is microscopic. We've got contact with the Alpha Quadrant! Oh no, it's with the Romulans. And finally, we can teleport through the wormhole. and the best disappointment of them all, there's a time shift. they can't go to the past. Oh well, at least he'll send their letters at the right time so that the timeline isn't messed up. Oh no, that's right...he dies before that can happen. Amazing.

Another episode that helps sets the functions of the accredited characters. Here we are first introduced to the Vidiians and Kess as an assistant to the Doctor. Neelix is put into a critical condition. It is still at a point that Neelix hasn't reached Jar-Jar annoying but any fan who watches the first Season DVD set (or any of the seasons that we have to put up with him) sees him die and wishes he stayed that way. This episode is not nearly as disappointing as the one where he does die but Seven decides to bring him back...but I digress. This is the first time we are introduced to the Vidiians and won't be the last time Voyager encounters them. This episode helps set up some of the dangers besides the Kazon that the crew will face.

This episode has a lot of set up. This is the first episode to deal with the consequences of Janeway's actions. The senior officer staff isn't set yet and even though the fans know or can guess who's getting what positions, it's a matter of how they obtain them. The best part of the episode is that it's isn't happy-go-lucky in placing B'lanna as chief engineer. She and the Captain show doubts about her ability for the position. Luckily, she proves her worth (to herself and the crew) when she gets them out of the mess. One of the better B'lanna centric story lines that I can remember seeing.
