Romantic and Thrifty

Dawn: I've been engaged to Lee for, um... God!.. about three years. He proposed on a Valentine's Day. Although he didn't do it face to face. He did it in one of the little Valentine's message bits in the paper. Um... I think he had to pay for it by the word 'cause it just said, um, 'Lee love Dawn. Marriage?' Um, which, you know, I like, 'cause it's not often you get something that's both romantic and thrifty...

Ignorant times

This has been bugging me for a while - TV.com allows slurs against homosexuals. Report someone for calling someone a hateful slur, but says a moderator has already looked over the content and approved it after someone else reported it. I don't understand it, and it makes me incredibly sad and angry. Why the discrimination?

Did I Stutter?

I enjoyed this episode, but have been disappointed by the quality of the last few episodes since the writers' strike. Aside from "Dinner Party," which was almost complete before the strike, the episodes have been scattered, with so many storylines jammed into the 22 minutes that none of them really develop or can go anywhere. They try to insert a Pam and Jim storyline into every episode, which gets old quick. The engagement joke was funny the first time, not the third, fourth and tenth. They need progress in their relationship - it's been the same this entire season. I was extermely disappointed to see so little Ryan, after last week's episode focused on his cocaine addiction. While I thought Toby and Ryan ganging up on Jim for their respective reasons was a great idea, but could have been saved as a central plot.

I know things with Stanley were going to finally take center stage, but the whole thing felt a little weak. Although I always enjoy Darrell's tips on how black people live, it was really the only part of the storyline that was funny. They are making Michael too unrealistic - a lot of the time in the first three seasons it was believable that he could goof off, but he was afraid of losing his job. Now it's become ridiculous.

One of the only things saving this from being a mediocre episode were Andy and Dwight. Every time I see an Xterra, I laugh. And I love that they referenced Angela keying Andy's car, leaving a huge scratch tht Andy calls a racing stripe.

Overall, it seems the writers are trying to put too much in - I realize that because of the strike the season won't be as long as the others, but it seems to me they're taking the ten ideas they had for episodes and stuff them into four episodes, which just doesn't work.

While I enjoyed this episode, it wasn't a stunning success that made me want to watch it over and over again, like many other King of the Hill episodes. However, "Four-Wave Intersection" is a pretty good episode, and shouldn't be skipped.

Boomhauer episodes are few and far between, and usually involve him as a secondary character, so it was nice that he played such a large role in this episode. It also went a long way in developing Boomhauer's character, which hasn't been a priority since, well, ever.

Oddly enough, Joseph had some of the best lines of the episode, with his explanation on why he was at the Hills' house instead ov his own ("My dad has the heat cranked all the way up! He said something about fighting fire with fire, but it wasn't working for me!") and his interpretation of the words to the commercial jingle for directions to the water park.

While the idea was pretty funny that the older kids were insisting Bobby, Connie and Joseph couldn't go on the water slide over something as asinine as not being local, I didn't really understand where the joke came from - they didn't really made it clear where exactly this water park was - I thought it was IN Arlen, but Bobby's an Arlen native so they should've let him in. If it was outside of Arlen, where outside of town? I know they got on the highway, but never said how far from Arlen they were.

Pour Some Sugar on Kahn

While this episode has its ups and downs, overalll it's a funny episode, and introduces Minh's father, General Gum, who rivals Kahn's mother (seen in the seventh season episode "Maid in Arlen") as the most overbearing parent. It was nice to see some character development this season for Kahn, who has been in too few episodes - other than "The Minh Who Knows Too Much," he really hasn't been one of the primary characters, usually getting a few lines, and even in that episode it was more about Minh and Dale.

We also are treated to an appearance by Ted Wassonasong when Kahn finds him in the karaoke bar. Kahn begins confiding in Ted, who quickly tells him to "save it for the stage". He is quickly becoming an Arlen staple with his dry wit and condescension.

The B-story keeps this episode from being spectacular. Peggy and Bobby competing for "bragging rights" made me smile a little at the beginning, it quickly became irritating. The only time it really tied into the main storyline was when Peggy and Bobby bet that Kahn will go back to being his arrogant, condescending self once the General leaves, and even then it wasn't nearly as funny as the writers probably hoped.

Girl, You'll Be a Giant Soon
Avg Score: 8.19    Total Ratings: 22    Total Reviews: 1
When I first watched this episode, I kind of regarded it as a filler - a less-than-stellar episode that goes in between more memorable episodes. However, I soon discovered myself watching it over and over again, and it is now one of my favorite episodes of the entire series.

One of the great things about this episode is its three distinct storylines - Hank and Luanne fighting to have propane accepted at the state fiar grill-off, Peggy, Nancy and Minh being denied entry into the open house at the "Baxter Death Mansion," and Bill, Boomhauer and Dale taking Bobby as their leader while Hank is off with Luanne.

The pairing of Luanne and Hank works oddly well, but thinking back to apst episodes, the two together makes for some great plots, like in the seventh season in "Night and Deity" when Luanne asks Hank to be her designated driver for her 21st birthday party. Hank's forced patience with Luanne's airhead attitude, especially when she suggests they "toss another bucket of propane on the fire" to celebrate.

While Luanne and Hank's adventures at the fair are funny, the best part of the episode is Peggy, Nancy and Minh scheming to get into the house, since the realtor has correctly pegged them as "looky-loos," and informs them that there's a "car accident down the street you can rubberneck at!" I honestly thought Peggy was going to get into some kind of mix-up and end up forced to buy the house after they make a fake offer to get in, but the story didn't even touch on the possibility.

One of the best parts of Bill, Dale and Boomhauer's time with Bobby is when they start following him around as if he were Hank.

Overall, this is a spectacular episode, and shouldn't be passed over. Even in a seasonthat is overwhelmed with great episodes like "Patch Boomhauer," "The Incredible Hank" anmd "Redneck on Rainey Street," this episode stands out as a classic.

Tears of an Inflatable Clown
Avg Score: 8.07    Total Ratings: 26    Total Reviews: 1
This episode reminds me a lot of the tenth season episode "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Clown." The storyline is just weak, and seems more like B-story material - it can't quite carry the episode alone.

One of the things that bothered me the most was everyone's willingness to go along with the diversity instructor's wacky idea. I love that King of the Hill is presented in such a way that it could be happening in real life somewhere in Texas, but this plot is too extreme to have everyone in a normal society going along with it. While Lucky running from medical attention for his wire-barbed hand was funny, it was more slapstick and outlandish than most storylines, straying from the underlying context of reality King of the Hill.

While the whole thing involving Lucky and the barbed wire frisbee was a little slapstick-y for my taste, it did have some funny moments, particularly when he had slathered himself in Vaseline and the guys couldn't hold onto him. Re-watching the episode,I thought it was funnier the second time around, however, the other elements of the episode did not improve with a second viewing.

This episode wasn't awful, but it was a little disappointing, especially following twelfth season gems like "Death Pickks Cotton" and "Raise the Steaks" (although Hank raising cows in his backyard isn't exactly the most realistic element to hit the show). Overall, it was slightly forgettable but did make me look forward to better episodes this season.
