The Mighty B! Beenadict Arnold Avg Score: 8.51 Total Ratings: 8 Total Reviews: 1 |
Two funny cartoons in a row for The Mighty B!. Here Bessie realizes (from watching a TV commerical) that Happy has gotten all fat and lazy. Scared for Happy's health, she immediately puts him on an exercise and diet regimen. Bessie being Bessie, she completely overdoes the TLC- and when Portia offers Happy a cookie, he is more than willing to abandon the Higgenbottoms for the Gibbons. The cartoon then takes off in funny directions as Ben tries to take Happy's place as Bessie's pet (he even gives himself a dog name- "Pizza") and Happy soon learns that the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence.

The Mighty B! The Apprentice Avg Score: 8.79 Total Ratings: 12 Total Reviews: 3 |
After some lackluster installments, the Mighty B! finally nails the bullseye with The Apprentice. It seems Mrs. Gibbons isn't selling enough Patty Faye cosmetics, and is in danger of losing her van as a result. She enlists the Honeybee scouts to help, and of course Bessie takes to the challenge. Bessie is at her "Sponge Bobbiest" here as she cheerfully drives Mrs. Gibbons and Portia crazy with her 24/7 devotion to the business. There are some very funny poses and bits here, a few take-offs on the Mary Kay cosmetics slogans, and the ending is great. A very funny cartoon and the best to date.

The Mighty B! Li'l Orphan Happy/Body Rockers Avg Score: 6.83 Total Ratings: 20 Total Reviews: 2 |
I didn't care for either episode- in Little Orphan Happy, its Mothers Day, and Happy is uh-not happy- because he misses his mom. Bessie, being Bessie, decides to search all of San Francisco for Mom. This episode starts out good, but once they find "Mom" the plot just kinda dies. Body Rockers started out very funny, with the Bee Scouts taking a trip to the Discovetorium. I liked the hippie tour guide, the "film of the future" that dated from the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidency, and the idea that Bessie and Penny think they've been shrunk and swallowed inside a human body, ala "Fantastic Voyage". Then Bessie starts to mention all the various ways they can exit the human body- she starts with the head, and then as she begins to get lower, Penny begs her not to stop. But they don't, unfortunately, and the result is one of the most blatant poop jokes I've ever seen. I'm not a fan of body function humor in cartoons, and this one was the ultimate. Too bad, because it ruined a fun beginning.

The Mighty B! Bat Mitzvah Crashers/Super Secret Weakness Avg Score: 7.48 Total Ratings: 14 Total Reviews: 2 |
I liked Bat Mitzvah Crashers a lot- it seems Penny and Bessie go to a Bat Mitzvah, really enjoy the experience, and decide to start crashing every Bat Mitzvah in sight. This works until it begins to interfere with their Honey Bee Scout activities (gasp!). They swear off Bat Mitzvah crashing, then learn Portia's cousin is holding the ultimate Bat Mitzvah party. There are some funny jokes in this one, there are some nice scenes (particularly their cooing over the baby monkey) and its nice to see Portia in a sympathetic role for a change. All and all well done. I can't say the same for the second installment- where Bessie becomes determined to find out what the equivalent of kryptonite is for the Mighty B. It starts out fine, but then the plot just kinda peters out towards the end. It just did not strike me as funny. One other thing about this series, sometimes the visuals are funny, sometimes the dialogue is funny, but rarely are the visuals and dialogue funny together at the same time.

The Mighty B! is about a 9 3/4 years old girl named Bessie Higgenbottom whose goal is to collect every Honey Bee merit badge there is. Bessie is a lot like Spongebob: she's cheerful, brass, and doesn't have a jaded bone in her little body. Her friend Penny is alot like Patrick, only not quite as dumb. Her main rival is Portia, who is your typical stuck up rich girl. The good parts about the Mighty B! include the fact it is traditional hand-drawn cel animation, and the creators celebrate that- the animation has a lot of wild energy to it that you don't find in a Flash or CGI type cartoon. Also Bessie is an appealing character who is very expressive. So far there have been three episodes. The first two used well-worn plots, sometimes the cartoon was able to successfully do its own take on these, sometimes it wasn't. The third episode was better in terms of plotting. Future episode sound like they are more original and develop the characters further. As long as Bessie keeps her innocence, and they stay with the "Honey Bee merit-badge collecting" motif the show has a real chance to become something.
