MY REVIEWS

  • show: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit

    episode: Abomination

    The Bottom Line: "Mediocre"

OK, so this episode was pretty good, overall, but by far, not one of the best ones I've ever seen, to be sure.

Yes, the idea behind being able to "re-educate" a homosexual into being a straight person is a divise issue and one that can be explored well in this show. I think that part was done very well.

However, when the son of a homophobic psychiatrist turns out to be gay himself, that's when it starts to fall apart. No father could be that anti-gay and still love his son. I mean, where's the reality? As well, the son's lover was murdered and he showed practically no sadness about it all, instead focusing on his own "outing." Come on! This episode just highlights gay men in the same vein as other shows: totally promiscuous with no sense of morality. I would expect more from a show where one of the main actors (BD Wong) is gay. Can't he explain to the writers how ridiculous it is? Guess it's not good TV to show an emotionally-wrecked gay man after the death of his boyfriend.

  • show: Stargate SG-1

    episode: 200

    The Bottom Line: "Terrible"

OK, so Marty from Workhold Extreme comes back for help from members of SG-1 in reviewing and discussing his new movie based loosely on the characters from SG-1.

The entire premise is just based on flashbacks, possibilities, and dream sequences. This episode is just full of paradies of the show itself (how they re-cast a RDA clone), and so on. They parodied Star Trek: TOS, Thunderbirds and even made fun of Farscape (given two characters in SG-1 were on Farscape, it was mildly amusing).

Given the Orii threat and everything else going on in the current universe, this is the best they could come up with? This was very disappointing.

Just like Stargate: Atlantis' recent episode where Dr. Weir wakes up in a mental institution where they're trying to make her believe Atlantis is all in her head. This was already done in an episode of Star Trek: TNG.

COME ON, people! I love SG-1 and SG:A, but COME ON! I hope this is a sign that bigger and better things are to come and this is a comic interlude before some great episodes to come! Otherwise, Stargate: X will definitely become Stargate: EX!

  • show: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit

    episode: Ridicule

    The Bottom Line: "Superb"

This show has dealt with a number of issues over the last three seasons, ranging from child abuse, paedophilia, rape, and the whole gamut of human sexuality. This time, they deal with the rape of a male by three females.

I thought they did a very good job in this episode, showing how society, including police officers and the legal system itself, could possibly deal with what they consider "non-rape." How can a man be raped if he gets aroused during the forcible sex?

I was not impressed with Stabler's character at all throughout this episode. While he does show moodiness, lack of understanding and compassion many times throughout the series, this time was a big low for him. He is supposed to be an advocate for victims, but this time he appears to be a sexist jerk who shows no sympathy for the victim. It made me re-evaluate how conscientious he truly is.

Diane Neal guest-stars as one of the rapists. Definitely did a great job in this episode. She makes a great villain.

    An excellent episode, as always.

  • show: Stargate Atlantis

    episode: Sateda

    The Bottom Line: "Great"

While on yet another visit to another planet in the Peagaus Galaxy, the team comes upon a villages that had been previously visited by Ronin while he was a Runner from the Wraith (while he still had the tracker).

On the previous visit, there were disastrous consequences for the village, with Ronin blaming himself for their deaths. This time around, he negotiates for the freedom of the other members of the team.

When the Wraith return, they return Ronin to his home planet where he has to manage to survive, as he has countless times before, while the rest of the SG:ATL team tries to find and rescue him.

  • show: Who Wants to Be a Superhero?

    episode: Episode 102

    The Bottom Line: "Good"

This episode kept me on the edge of my seat, as did the series premiere. The contestants are judged on how how they deal with attack dogs (they were wearing safety suits) while attempting to help an elderly woman who had locked her keys in her home.

Immediately afterwards, there was another elimination round, and I agree with Stan Lee's decision as to who was eliminated.

Rounding out the end of the show, the superheroes received costume makeovers. Highlighting once again that he's always watching, Mr. Lee was disappointed when superhero blatantly lied about liking his new costume, but commenting to the others about how much he disliked it.

The end of the episode shows Iron Enforcer being booted off for not just being a "superhero" and instead being asked by Mr. Lee to return as a Super Villain to help test the rest of the contestants. Thus, the Dark Enforcer is born.

To be honest, that seemed incredibly fake and forced to me. I realize it's good TV, but I just don't see the point. He was incensed that he was eliminated, but turned around and immediately accepted the offer to continue to help Mr. Lee. Just didn't seem real to me.

But, as I said, this is fun and good TV, and I can't wait to watch the rest of the episodes.
