MY REVIEWS

  • show: Celebrity Poker Showdown

    The Bottom Line: "Superb"

No-Limit Texas Hold 'Em plus celebrities plus alcohol equals some interesting poker play! It's great to see celebrities when they get serious about the game between all the goofing around. The players (some good, some bad) also earn extra points in my book for raising money for charity. One half-point deduction is for the reality (non-)star game at the beginning of tournament 6. That was the only episode where even the winners were losers! ; ) Another half-point is for the expansion of each episode to two-hours by adding an hour's worth of "padding" (more celebrity interviews, chit-chat, host commentary, etc.) Pardon the pun, but "Bravo" to Bravo for airing what Dave Foley once described as "the show where sucking out and flopping the nuts are activities the whole family can enjoy." [Both of those are poker terms, for those of you with dirty minds]

  • show: Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List

    The Bottom Line: "Perfect"

I saw Kathy Griffin's original "The D-List" special on Bravo and I own her "Allegedly" DVD, so I knew I'd love this show right away. The show gives the viewer an undiluted look at what being a D-List celebrity is really like (trying to get the agent on the phone, being booked for nightmare gigs, being interviewed by people who call her "Kathy Griffith," etc.) This show is kind of like The Anna Nicole Show ...except it's intentionally funny! It lets fans of other "reality" shows know that not everyone gets jobs/money/vacations handed to them on a silver platter just because they're on TV.

  • show: Too Late With Adam Carolla

    The Bottom Line: "Poor"

"...plus the normal phone calls and Adams usual rants." That's great for a radio show, but this is a TV show. For someone who (along with Jimmy Kimmel) regularly bashed Oprah on "The Man Show," this show is basically rooted in the Oprah talk show mold...with emphasis on the "mold."
