Rant of the Week - 9th July 2008

Welcome to another Rant of the Week. Being in the middle of Summer, Malta is very hot at the moment.

TV Series

I finished watching the first season of The Big Bang Theory and it was great. I really enjoyed it. I watched the 3rd and 4th episode of Weeds and I am starting to get over all the changes they did from last season. It looks like another strong season. I started watching New Amsterdam but I stopped in the first episode. I really didn't enjoy it.

Movies

During the National Cinema Day in Malta, I watched Wanted and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I really enjoyed both movies. They were different but both were my type. Another movie I watched was Raise Your Voice. I thought I had already seen it before, but then realised that I haven't. It was a good movie. Finally I watched Pearl Harbor for the upteenth time. But that movie is always good.

Games

In Football Manager 2008 I am having good success with Manchester United. I built up two more teams and are now promoted to the Premiership, thus apart the traditional big 4, I have 6 others teams who are very strong. In Cybernations we were on the verge of a huge war, but things look to have calmed down.

Sports

The EURO2008 came to an end with Spain getting the win in the final against Germany. In Wimbledon, Venus Williams defeated her sister Serena. In the men's draw unfortunately Roger Federer lost to Rafael Nadal who became the first men since 1980 to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon. In Formula 1 we witnessed a very wet race, in which McLaren and Hamilton completely dominated. The third place by Barrichello in a Honda was quite surprising and it looks as if Ross Brown is finally strutting his stuff.

That is all for the day

National Cinema Day

Today in Malta it is the Annual National Cinema Day. It is a day where movies are discounted and priced at €3 each.

Thus I decided to go and watch two movies this morning. I watched Wanted and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Wanted

Wanted was really good. It had a very far fetched but interesting story. Angelina Jolie was great in it just as was James McAvoy. The story is about a 1,000yr old group of Assasins called The Fraternity. One of their major assets was to do the impossible, curving the bullet. I really enjoyed it. I give it 8/10

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Forgetting Sarah Marshall was exactly my type of movie. It was very funny to say the least. I enjoyed it a lot. The movie is from the team that gave us Knocked Up and yet again Jason Segel and Jonah Hill amongst others were great. I give it 8/10.

EURO 2008 - Final

Yesterday was the final of EURO 2008. Spain managed to win their first tournament in 44years. It has been a very good tournament where good football prevailed. Spain were quite strong and they managed to win 5 out of 6 matches, the only match they drew was in the quarter finals against Italy before winning on penalties.

In the final they managed to win 1-0 against Germany where Fernando Torres scored the only goal midway through the first half.

Rant of Week - 29th June 2008

Welcome back to my rant of the week. Lately I have been working half days for the summer, and thus I am having much more time to watch DVDs and series.

TV Series

I watched the second episode of the fourth season of Weeds. It looks different than the previous season but it is still quite good. I finished the first season of Reaper and I must say it was quite funny. I started The Big Bang Theory and it is definitely one of the funniest sitcoms I ever watched.

Movies

I watched The Incredible Hulk and I liked it. It was much better than the 2004 Hulk, and having Edward Norton as main actor only helps. I watched VirginTerritory which was based in the late 1800's early 1900's Florence. I watched How High and it is my type of movie. Very funny. Superhero Movie was a very good parody on Spiderman and other Comic movies. Finally I watched Semi-Pro, and I enjoyed the story of an underdog team.

Games

In Football Manager 2008, I arrived in 2017. In 2015 I lost the league but won it again in 2016 and won the FA Cup and Carling Cup as well but ended up losing the Champions League final. I really enjoy this career cos I have built up a couple of teams and it is quite interesting. I played 2 games on Pro Evolution Soccer on PS3 and didn't do bad. In Cybernations things are just going great.

Sports

Euro 2008 has now arrived in the final. It is the usual suspects Germany against the eternal underachievers Spain. Should be a good final. In Tennis there is currently Wimbledon going on and I must say I was very surprised in the women's division where both Sharapova and Ivanovic got eliminated.

Thats all for the day

The second episode of the fourth season of Weeds was the first one where 'Little Boxes' wasn't used. It was a bit strange watching an episode of Weeds without its trademark soundtrack.

Nancy got a job from Guillermo to get into Mexico. She thought she was going to bring drugs for him, but in fact he was testing her and filming her to see how she handles it.

Celia in prison started getting beaten up by her cellmate who wanted to make her, "her special friend". Meanwhile someone started to believe Celia when he got his hand on a photo of Nancy together with Guillermo.

This was a new kind of episode for Weeds.

Nancy and family are on the run after the fire of Agrestic and they went to the border to Joshua's grandma. There they meet Joshua's father and he doesn't like Nancy or Andy.

Meanwhile Celia has been arrested and after giving up the names of Doug, Nancy, Dean and Sanjay. But when Doug, Dean and Sanjay are questioned they all say that it is Celia the mind behind everything and she gets arrested.

Meanwhile on the Mexican border, Nancy starts a new business venture with Guillermo, but she tells him that no heroin should be involved.

This new season can be interesting.

Following the 3-0 win against Italy, Holland showed another breathtaking display in beating France 4-1.

Now they have scored 7 goals against the two finalists of the 2006 World Cup. They are definitely one of the teams most in form at the moment.

Marco Van Basten's side is playing fluent football just like the days of Johan Cruyff.

Early on Holland opened the score through Dirk Kuyt. Midway through the second half made it 2-0 through Robin Van Persie. Then Thierry Henry scored for France but a couple of seconds later Arjen Robben scored an impossible goal to make it 3-1. Deep into injury time Wesley Sneijder scored an amazing goal to make the score 4-1.

Holland are now definitely one of the favourites for the trophy.

Italy against Romania was one of the very best matches of the tournament.

After Italy's 3-0 loss to Holland they needed a win. Meanwhile Romania had played in a boring 0-0 draw with France. Everyone expected Romania to play like against France always defending.

But they played a free flowing football match and together with Italy's urgency for a win, this was an amazing match.

In the first half Luca Toni had a goal disallowed for dubious offside.

In 55th minute a mistake by Gianluca Zambrotta, paved the way for Adrian Mutu to score for Romania, but barely 1 minute passed before Christian Panucci equalised for Italy.

In the final 10 mins Romania were given a dubious penalty but Gianluigi Buffon performed a brilliant save to leave Italy with a chance of advancing.

Euro 2008 - Group A : Switzerland 1-2 Turkey

This match surprised everyone. After watching their first match losses, nobody thought much about it.

But it was a very rainy day. This made it very difficult to play, and in return both teams gave us an attacking display. Switzerland just like in the first match were very offensive and they scored first in the first half.

But Turkey came out as a different team, and they managed to equalise early in the second half. Then late on Switzerland missed a clear chance on a counter attack but they missed, and a couple of mins later, deep in stoppage time Turkey scored the winning goal. I really feel sorry for the Swiss cos they have played beautiful football, yet ended up with 2 losses from 2 matches and are now eliminated.
