Nice gift from a student

On my last day of working at my school for semester (I work as an education assistant/tutor) I received a nice gift from a student, a very nice thank you note. Normally some students are ungrateful but others are very nice and appreciate the help they get from people like myself so this nice student gives me a nice set of comics. I often bring comics to the school for my leisure, as a thank you for the help he received from me he came in with a bunch of comics that he acquired from a friend whose dad owns a comic book store. He told me they might be worth something but I didn't care about that it was the fact that he said thanks that was really important. Here are the comics he gave me:

Two Supergirl comics:

One Superman and Superboy comic:

And a WonderWoman and a Crow comic:

Very cool. I have had kids offer me gifts and thank you before and everytime it's really something special.

RIP George Carlin with a word on Lenny Bruce

One of the funniest has breathed his last breath passed away at 71. He's had numerous health issues so this isn't surprising. I love Georgy. Whether you disagree or agree with his view he was ALWAYS funny. I love the guy for telling like it is. Too many sell out politically correct comedians nowadays so George was definitely a cut above the rest. I watched all his HBO specials, the last interview I heard with Carlin was on the Bob Costas show on the radio (See to all the radio haters the radio does serve well sometimes). Hard to pinpoint which is my favorite quote or moment as they were all good. If I had to pick one it be: "Well, if crime fighters fight crime and fire fighters fight fire, what do freedom fighters fight? They never mention that part to us, do they?"

Similar to Lenny Bruce Carlin is no doubt famous for his usual cursing on stage which led up famous "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television". However, unlike Lenny who was a bonified GENIUS Comedian, Carlin wasn't harassed as much by the police as did Bruce did. Hell Lenny Bruce didn't even get fair trials on his hearings for obscenity folliwing his act. Such a shame really. I'am not taking away from Carlin but since people compare Carlin to Lenny I would only think it's fair to take this opportunity to really bring into focus two celebrities one of which is highly known and the other of which SHOULD HAVE BEEN KNOWN and still talked about to this day:

Back to "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Televions" Hypocritically this didn't mean that people who were on tv never said these words (I'am sure many did) but this was a big no no. Now in 2008, as Television has gone down in quality (depending on how you look at it_) you hear this words more frequently especially on a show like South Park. Even Radio itself has been a lot looser since the time of this controversy. Anyway, Carlin was a funny guy but even more important gave people things to about: greedy corporations, the rather declining America we live in today, our political parties, religion and so much more. RIP

Incredible Hulk 2008

Well didn't get around to blogging about but now I have time The Incredible Hulk hit theaters nationwide on Friday, and I'am happy about it. It looks o be another great Marvel hit. It's been a great year for Marvel from Iron Man to now Incredible Hulk. This is the second Hulk movie following Ang Lee's version and from the early reaction it seems to be all positive and unlike Ang's version will seem to be commercially better. Ask for the Hulk, the Hulk is truly in a class of his own very popular super-hero alongside Marvel heroes like Spider-Man, X-Men and so fort even becoming a part of the Avengers. He's been around for nearly forty years. The evolution of the comics over time has improved the quality of the Hulk of the Hulk look, along with the stories and a darker direction.

If you haven't gotten into the Hulk he is definitely worth the time to get into. Besides the Hulk is psychologically very interesting you got mild mannered Bruce Banner and his alter ego the Hulk co-existing if you will for good. The adaptions of the Hulk for TV have been a mixed bag a case where the cartoons are more geared toward the comic while the TV Version with the great Bill Bixby was about as faraway as you could get from the comic. However, now Marvel knows the tremendous drawing power that these ocmics have and have tried to do more faitful. THe Hulk is a great comic book but besides that is a great character. People who say comics are no good really don't know much about the power of comics as far as art ad literature go. Anyways, can't wait to see The Hulk in the big screen again.

Lakers vs. Celtics in the Finals

Well Lakers did it, largely overlooked by the media LA has made it back in the finals after about a four year absence. Meanwhile the Celtics largely over-hyped throughout the season since the Garnett trade are making their finals appearence in nearly twenty years!! This is a shortened version of my blog at TVRAGE but I will repeat a couple of things and add a couple of other things:

http://www.tvrage.com/profiles/marvelfan89/blogs/view/?vid=10595

1) The Celtics are the underdogs and considering their playoff troubles against weaker teams don't look as dominant as they did in the regular season. The Lakers meanwhile have taken care of business and never looked in any legimitate danger. While it's true that Lakers lost to the Celtics in season, that doesn't mean anything since Kobe had a bad game and the team didn't have Pau Gasol who has been a godsend for this Laker team in the absence of Andrew Bynum. People who harp on what happens during the season make me laugh in general.

2)Garnett has been a loser for the most of his career and has never won the big one so has Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. Yep. Bear in mind this is the same Celtics that up until the Eastern Finals couldn't win a road game to save their lives and has been inconsistent in the post season from their starters to their bench. The Lakers have won on the road and while they have a tough task in winning in Boston they can pull it out and win their games at home. Kobe has three rings and has been his usually superself scoring about 30 pts. He's got Derek Fisher, Lamar Odom, Gasol, Vlad, Sasha, Luke Walton and others. Kobe can pretty much take the Celtics apart but of course that's easier said than done. Although this column by Bill Simmons (hilarious, entertaining and yet very true0 sums why the Lakers should win this series:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/080530

Matchups will be interesting, both sides are not setting anything in stone and thus we will see many different matchups in the series. With that said, I'am excited about this series. Both clubs are great and have worked hard to this point but only team can prevail.

Well LMAO at Hulk Hogan and his loser son Nick Hogan

http://showhype.com/story/nick_hogan_will_cop_plea_in_felony_reckless_driving/vote_login/

"Hulk Hogan's idiot son Nick may finally get his comeuppance. You'll remember that then-17-year-old son Nick wrecked his car while drag racing , critically injuring his passenger, 22 year old John Graziano . Nick was eventually charged with felony reckless driving involving serious bodily injury. Graziano is expected to be a near-vegetable for the rest of his life,... "

So many laughs don't know where to start. Well there's an old saying that goes "like Father like son", this expression is generally used for examples of stupidity and incompetence such as George Bush Sr. and George W. Bush, then there is Nick and Hulk Hogan. Hogan was a guy who made millions based on lies that he was "clean" in and out of wrestling yet was a steroid freak for a big bulk of his career and did drugs. The ironic thing about this whole Nick incident is that there was an episode of that stupid "Hogan Knows Best" (should be retitled Hogan doesn't know anything) where Nick was given warnings about reckless driving. Well clearly what went in one ear went out the other. However, the hilarity doesn't stop there, recently audio tapes have surfaced where Nick and Hulk bash the victim John Graziano:

""I know he was pretty aggressive and used to yell at people and used to do stuff. For some reason, God laid some heavy **** on that kid, man. I don't know what he was into."

Nick responds by saying, "John was a negative person." Wow great words from the Steroidster and his bratty son.

and Nick tallks about wearing an orange jumpsuit for the "sympathetic factor" in coping a plea of eight months for FELONY RECKLESS DRIVING. Then on the conversation turns into one where Nick and Hogan talk about a new reality shows!!!! LMAO Well you know stupidity breeds stupidity and I'am never surprised by celebrities or their kids doing the most stupid things and still taking for granted what they have. Gee I wonder why so many people badmouth celebrities.

Well gotta call em like I see them this episode was rather poorly done. While I generally agree with Penn and Teller debunk it's episodes like this that do more harm than good to them.

As a chronic insomniac myself, I was interested to see how much they would dive into the world of insomnia but to my surprise their efforts were rather weak to say the least.

First of they chose a really unlikely insomniac named Pat, this obese guy as a candidate for this episode. Pat was supposed to enter a mattress convention to choose the right mattress to help him sleep. Instead Pat stays up the whole night partying. I guess what P and T were doing by this is showing everything that a person who doesn't want to sleep should do only problem they didn't offer any help till the end and the suggestions they did offer (going to bed at a normal time, exercising, etc) are all stuff insomniacs have tried and guess what? We still have trouble.

I also didn't like the fact that this was a one sided view of what they think sleeping pills or insomnia is about. They found one, only one doctor who spoke out against sleeping pills yet they couldn't (or wouldn't) find a doctor who prescribe sleeping aid? Come on now that would have been easy.

I take sleeping pills myself and have to say that they work. The doctor against the pills said people who take these pills are more likely to have strokes and heart attacks but that really isn't the case. Actually the guy they chose as a test subject, Pat, a heavily obese guy is more likely to have a heart attack by his sheer high cholesterol alone that regardless of whether he used a sleeping aid.

So there you have I'am objective about rating episodes so this episode really was disappointing unlike the previous episode P and T just didn't persuade me at all to their side. Again whose tried all the suggestions they've mentioned and still has problems sleeping, I have to call this episode by their own world Bullsh**!. I mean even they agreed along with another skeptic that the right mattress DOES make a difference in sleeping aid.

They just didn't do homework or offer an alternative view and normally I would have fine with that if they presented a strong enough cause for their views but they didn't.

Don't know what the other person was going on about, Penn & Teller Bullsh**! is entertainment for sure but it does have some factual basis behind it. When trying to bash a show and discredit it, it's always best to have actual proof to back it up.

You can't tell me that Dolphins haven't been exploited or misused during our lifetimes. Penn and Teller didn't cross the lines either. As far as science goes, hello they did actually talk to a marine biologist in this episode too who served as FACTS to debunk several myths about Dolphins including claims that they can help special needs children.

The episode also focused on this scam about "Dolphin Therapy" (yes there are people stupid enough to fall for this scam) where a woman called Linda Shay milks willing victims of hundreds of dollars for therapy using Dolphins (in the form of Dolphin Dolls. LMAO).

My favorite scene was the "Seawood or Seaweed Dance" designed to alleviate and help the victim. ..."call forth the inner dolphin!!!". LMAO.

I think people who bash the episode are missing a few things. Nobody doubts that dolphins are smart but that they do this extraordinary things that have no scientific basis of which several scammers like the aforementioned Linda do that there's an issue.

With that said, Penn and Teller did what they had to do to expose several lies.

Just watched this a day or so can't believe it was the second episode of the series. A woman is missing all the fingers point to the husband even though there looks like no evidence or is there?

If I remember well he kills her, dismembers her body, then using a woodchipper tries to destroy any traces of her skin and bone. Wow. The evidence is scratchy but how they pull it all together is amazing.

The guy used a chainsaw of a sort to dismember her wife's body. He tries to scratch away the serial numbers but the forensic lab is able to apply a special liquid to get the real serial numbers and is turns out the saw was owned by the husband.

An eyewitness recognizes or sees a man using a woodchipper. It turns out that was the husband doing his dirty work.

A case where the forensics helped but an eyewitness also helped things as well.

It was an eerie case the lengths people go to cover up their crimes let alone dismembering a body. The husband eventually gets what he deserves but this one definitely is a memorable case.

Gun lovers still don't get it, as long people have easy access to guns, guns will be the perpetuator of many deaths. They clearly don't care about the number of deaths each year attributed to gun violence. This whole cliché that "people kill people" is one of the most overused clichés ever and it's not really accurate, yes while people do kill people the method they use is mainly a gun. Pia didn't miss any points, actually the gun lover Kent MISSED THEM ALL. First I'am not surprised that the son said that the Dad was never proud of him until he got until the guns (goes to show what a bad parent this might be to have his son think of him so small that the only way they can bond is through use of guns) that's really sad. I'am also not surprised that Kent looked an idiot and had nothing to say against the victims of gun violence who told him until he knows somebody or has gun violence done to him will he really see the damage that guns do.

Pia had it right the first time the only people that need to carry guns are the police and military. We also had birds eye of guns sales in action and what a surprise so many loopholes there. I mean all it takes is a simple background check and a honor system that is totally devoid of common sense. For instance one question as Pia pointed out was if whether "you have been in a mental institution" how many crazies who want a gun would say yes to that question? Yes you guessed zero or not many.

Despite Kent's claims that the laws benefit gun abiding citizens actually they benefit anybody who wants to break the laws. As we saw clips of the gun , Morgan explained how in private sales, the laws and discretion diminish drastically as all it takes to complete a sale is somebody's name and an address. Talk about complete stupidity and people why why we have so many gun shootings in school.

Again there is assumed stupidity that well everyone who owns a gun will always use it wisely completely idiotic. All of the arguments gun supporters are totally outdated and out of touch with reality. What did Morgan say there about 30,000 deaths a year due to gun violence. I don't recall Kent using any statistic to back up his useless arguments...I guess in his mind like in most gun lover you ignore those statistics. I guess all these hot to trot gun lovers don't care about that and this assumption that having more people armed in this country will diminish crime is the most stupidest thing. If anything this episode once again proves how all the arguments gun lovers put out there are very weak if not laughable and that many gun lovers are either ignorant or indifferent to the death that guns bring to this country.

Avg Score: 7.94    Total Ratings: 46    Total Reviews: 6
Well in honor of George Carlin SNL ran its first episode. I see most of the reviews of the episode are positive and I will agree with them. Man even comparing this episode to any of the crap SNL produces nowadays is mind blowing as there is no comparison. Today's SNL is CRAP, yesterday's SNL was classic, edgy, politically incorrect, original and most important funny, very funny. This is something that I can't say much about the SNL of today. Anyways on to the pilot episode:

The opening sketch with John Belushi learning ESL was absolutely brilliant, nowadays of course so called edgy comedies have joined on the immigrant jokes bandwagon but SNL to do this and do it in a way that is funny is saying something. Coincidentally, this sketch is often replayed a lot during any mention of John Belushi. Coincidence? Not really. It was also played during the 20 or 15 th anniversary celebration many years ago. Great Sketch.

George Carlin does his monologue and the crowd loves it. Whether Carlin was "on drugs" during this show seems to be a moot point, he was funny even though as stated he does not appear in the sketches. The "courtroom" sketch was funny.

Now we get to Andy Kaufman doing the famous Mighty Mouse song and yes Andy just like Belushi was often funny. In the hands of anybody else, this would have failed miserably but only Andy could make something like this so hilarious.

Black artist Janis Ian performs her music and is very touching. The "Shark Bite" sketch was funny as hell. SNL often routinely did sketches where there was a con man or a disturbed individual trying to manipulate a person or persons to their scam and this was one of them. Dan Aykroyd often played this slimeballs like a true genius here it was another comedy genius John Belushi doing it. He and Curtin had chemistry here. The "Jamitol" sketch was average but considering the really touch subject of two gay men there's not much they could have done here although in later sketches they would really push the envelope of this subject (remember the famous Bill Murray/OJ Simpson kiss spoofing Mandigo?)

The debut of Weekend Update was decent and I always enjoyed Chevy Chase making fun of President Ford. Again another classic routine that SNL would do smartly is making fun of Presidents especially Presidents that deserve to be made fun of which continue to this day with the likes of George W. Bush.

The Muppets sketch involving The Land of Gorch did feel a bit out of touch but anybody who knew about the Muppets must have loved this sketch. I liked the Muppets so seeing this back it still made me laugh and at the very least nostalgic so high points here as well.

The Bee Hospital sketch is admittedly a dumb sketch but in its defense is funny once you get used to it. Today SNL passes of MANY dumb sketches for a laugh but without the likes of a Chevy Chase, Belushi or an Aykroyd is just doesn't achieve its desired result.

One of my favorite politically incorrect (or was it?) sketches was the "Show Us Your Guns" home video. This was funny to see normal people who you wouldn't see carrying a gun in all sorts of situations shows us their guns. I mean think about that for a sec we are nation of gun lovers that much is true by the numerous gun related death in America year after year, yet whenever the media or somebody else points out the problems of having so many guns, gun lovers turn a blind eye to this since of course it doesn't involved them since they are not dead. I loved this sketch it showed me that in a sarcastic, dark humored way the writers were in tune into what was really going in society meaning that while people object to guns in general, many would people feel safer having one even though the results might be deadly Again whatever the intent was it was a funny sketch. Nowadays you'll see many sketches spoofing gun use, gun ownership done to the point of insanity.

"The Home Security" sketch was another brilliant sketch. Again another really original sketch where the writers are trying to show capitalism, manipulation, and advertising all in one scene. Brilliant. The sketch is basically about a family (Belushi and Gilda Radner) being manipulated (often forcefully and in poor taste) into acquiring a home security they don't really need. Hmmm some things don't change do they? We still got advertisers and slimeballs hit us with products we don't really need in the hopes that they will solve our paranoid fears. This sketch is done brilliant by Aykroyd, Morris, Gilda and John. It's not a failure at all, it might be the most brilliant sketch of the night.

After watching the pilot episode so many years later, there is no doubt in my eyes that this really was the catalyst for many cutting SNL shows to come. Then you have the fact most of the cast members from Belushi, Chase, Curtin, Morris, Aykrod are still heads and shoulders still better and funnier than even the new cast of SNL today well it's not hard to realize how SNL has achieved such longevity. If only the shows they had today are of same high quality.
