03/06/08 - New editorship

Seems I became the editor for Skins today, which comes as a bit of a surprise seen as I haven't posted anything to that guide in over a year. Luckily I've still been watching it, so I know what's been going on.

Now Level 70 (13%).

01/06/08 - Super Sentai Guide In Top 1000

Just noticed that today my biggest guide, Super Sentai has entered the top 1000 in terms of ratings for the first time. It currently sits at #995. That doesn't sound like much, but since 20/05/07 (little over a year) when I became editor, it's gone up over 1,700 places. Of course, that wouldn't have happened without all the people that visit and contribute to it, so thanks! Hopefully it'll keep moving up!

Now Level 70 (10%).

Going in, I wasn't sure about this incarnation of Super Sentai It was too retro (reportedly it was following Liveman from the 80s) and childish design-wise for me. Having watched it though, it was great. Right from the off we have excitement and action with the Enjin's chase of the villains in a sequence reminiscent of DekaRanger's opening scene from 5 years ago. Points for a guest appearance by Red Vehicle from CarRanger as an extra Enjin.

I liked the fcat that the Go-Onger team is already assembled as opposed to all or one of them being knew and learning about stuff as they go. This way we get action from the start, although I would liked to have seen the Rangers meet the Enjins for the first time. The Opening credits were interesting. The theme song definately sounds better with the visuals than it did alone. It looks like the taking the helmets off thing is going to be a frequent occurance, kind of like Hurricanger with the flip open visors. Usually helmet removal was more of a Power Rangers thing but seems to be creeping into Sentai too. The weapons look good, although I think they could have made them more proportionate to each other. Inserting the Soul Chips seems to take up too much time, but it probably won't be shown after a while. It's for our benefit now so we can see how it works. Bonper, the little helper robot was partly CGI here, which should help to keep him up and about instead of being rather immobile like other such characters. The mecha battle was spectacular, definately harking back to earlier shows with the shot of EnjinSpeedor racing down a road set with the little toy cars. The summoning sequence though has got to be most blatent toy advert ever. I'm surprised they didn't say 'Bandai' at some point. The cockpits with the steering wheel and changer combo remind of Boukenger. EnjinOh definately looks better in action than he did in stills and the promos.

I'm not sold on the cartoon Enjins from the ending though, but it is different I'll give them that. A welcome return to the song and dance number for the Rangers. The only thing I really didn't like in this episode was showing Green and Black as part of the team in the opening and endings when they haven't joined up yet in the show. It kind of ruins the surprise. Apart form that, I was very impressed.

Go On!

Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons
Renegade Rocket

That should be the motto of the VGR rocket, which is strangely reminiscent of Thunderbird 1 the way it's wings swing out and it flies like a normal plane. Reeves crashing his plane like that to prevent anyone getting the code box was kind of odd even for a Mysteron. They usually just blow themselves up but he kills himself seemingly just to spite Spectrum so they can't save the base. Unfortunately for him, this leads to Spectrum's biggest piece of luck ever when the code box activates underwater and destroys the VGR. Although if the process for entering codewords at Base Concord had been quicker they might have had more of a chance. They really couldn't have done it any slower. It must take about 20 seconds for each word when one person could do it in about 5.
Oddly, like Dr. Magnus in Operation Time, Reeves seems to use Captain Scarlet's gun when he's on Base Concord. A good episode with plenty of suspense towards the end, only spoiled by Spectrum's rather undeserved good luck.

Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons
Seek and Destroy
Avg Score: 8.29    Total Ratings: 7    Total Reviews: 1
This episode can easily be divided into three parts. The transporter and fire, Scarlet and Blue's rather quick search for Destiny and the aerial battle. Unfortunately, that final part, the six way Angel fight in the sky, takes up far too much of the episode. The crashes of four of the jets are nice, but theres just too much flying around and shooting at each other in between. That said, it was nice to see the Angels save the day themselves instead of just being Scarlet and Blue's backup. They by the way, spend must of this episode hiding in a ditch getting pelted with muck and assorted aircraft parts. The most memorable aspect of this episode was the transporter from the beginning of the episode. It's one of the crazy over-engineered-because-puppets-are-lazy type of machines you've come to expect from Supermarionation series where the thing does everything at the press of a button. It may just be for hauling crates, but its quite a sight to see it loading up and them driving down those small country roads taking up both lanes as it goes. It's kind of reminiscent of Thunderbird 2 the way it picks up things and holds them within it's structure. Not the best episode as that dogfight goes on too long.

Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons
Model Spy
Avg Score: 8.50    Total Ratings: 2    Total Reviews: 1
They Mysterons go after a guy called Verdain, who has the most horrible French accent imaginable but least it seems to be a fake voice and is still better than Destiny's French grunting. The monorail train crash was actualy quite frightening and it started wobbling then flung itself off the track. The Mysterons seem quite bloodthirsty here, apparently killing a train full of people just for the two models. Interestingly, neither of the two Mysteron models are killed during this episode; one is captured the other disappeared with Black. One major nitpick; throughout the episode the Mysterons have been trying to kill Verdain by setting fire to his boat and having Black try to shoot him, yet once BLack has him, suddenly they have to get him to some island. Where this island came from, how the Mysterons got it and why they've changed their plan is never made clear. Apart from that oddity, this is areasonable episode, but one of the best.

Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons
Point 783
Avg Score: 9.00    Total Ratings: 2    Total Reviews: 1
Great episode this with plenty of action and blowing up. Firstly, the killing of the two army guys in the tunnel was kind of creepy the way the tanker driver just blacked out and killed his friend in the explosion as well for no real reason. Then a welcome return of the amazing exploding Mysteron ability that we haven't seen since Captain Brown in the pilot episode. Strangely, just before the Mysteron exploded, Scarlet brought down protective tubes over Blue and the Supreme Commander and himself. He protcted his own indestructable body a the expense of all the other people in the room that were crushed when the ceiling came down. Nice work Scarlet. The attack on Point 783 was exciting, though if I was the owner of that shop where the SPV is kept I'd be charging Scarlet for destroying my stock. Another good shot was where the Unitron and said SPV go almost hand in hand off a cliff. Also, the Supreme Commander having a go at Blue for letting Scarlet die was a nice touch, even though we know he really wasn't dead.
