Memorial Day

May 26, 2008 is a special day in the United States. It is the day we pay tribute to the men and women of our military who gave their lives so that we may be free.

On September 11, 2001, I was busy working in my office in a small suburban town that lies in the shadow of New York City. A co-worker began to yell about a plane that accidentally flew into the World Trade Center. We soon learned it was an attack, not an accident. I comforted a friend, whose father was last seen in one of the towers. We watched in horror as people jumped from the towers to escape the raging fires. When the towers fell, we could see the ash in the air all around us. We realized that, while we may be oceans away from the conflicts of the world, we were no longer safe. For many of us, we lost friends, family and community members that day. In response, many men and women felt the call to protect our country and enlisted in the military. Now, almost 7 years later, more than 4000 U.S. Soldiers have given their lives to protect our loved ones from terrorism. Though this is a small number compared to Vietnam (over 58, 000 soldiers), World War 1 (over 116, 000 soldiers) and World War 2 (over 400,000 soldiers), each life has value and each soldier should be remembered for his/her sacrifice regardless of anyone's political or religious views.

My thoughts and prayers are with all military families on this special day of remembrance. And I am thankful to all of the men and woman who have sacfificed their lives so that my loved ones can be free.

Ode to Prom

It's PROM time here in my area and it's made me feel a bit nostalgic. There are a couple of songs I still remember that made my prom so special. I thought I'd share them...

This song still makes me a little teary-eyed.

This song makes me want to slow dance with my pillow.

They need to have proms for grown-ups. I think I really could appreciate it more now that I older. A gorgeous gown, a pretty corsage and a cute boy in a tuxedo. Yup, I certainly would be appreciatin' all those things right about now.....

When I first started seeing the teasers for this show I thought, hmmm...I haven't seen Enrico Colantoni in a while. I liked him in Just Shoot Me and he has guest starred in a few shows, usually playing some type of geeky character. I was curious to see what he would do with a more typically macho part. I'm also a big fan of cop shows so I thought...what the heck!

At first, I was a little lost. I missed that the beginning scene was a flash-foward, so when the next scene flashed-back 2 hours I had to rewind to figure out what happened. It was also hard, at first, to follow the dialogue and character interactions until I figured out who all the players were. However, all that happened in the first five minutes. After that it was smooth sailing and I was hooked. This episode had it all - suspense, action, sexual tension, humor and angst. Jules is spunky, Ed is hardcore, Greg (Enrico) did not disappoint. The action was gripping. The scenes between the gunman and his wife were very realistic and gave me the chills. The scene where Ed takes his shoot made me jump off the couch. I don't want to give anything away for I won't say more. I'll definitely be tuning in next week.

Wow! House is one of those shows where you always need to keep your "thinking cap" on. The dialogue is witty, the characters are intelligent and the information flies. But this episode....holy cow. Forget Wilson's Heart....my heart is broken.

I was completely engrossed in the previous episode, House's Head, and couldn't wait to see this episode. House has figured out that Amber was on the bus and the episode begins with House and Wilson basically snatching Amber and bringing her back to their hospital. Of course, we then expect this to be like most episodes of House - figure out what's wrong just in the nick of time and cure the patient. I mean, this is the woman Wilson loves, how could it end any other way...

The acting here was stellar. Each person deals with this crisis in their own way. Thirteen is clearly overwhelmed and ends up addressing her own mortality. Kutner reveals the past trauma of his parents' murders, which has made him rather fatalistic. And Wilson's love for Amber and desperation to save her is quite palpable. Wilson ultimately asks House to risk his life in order to save Amber. While this is out of character for Wilson, it's even more out of character for House to agree, but he does. House shows his own level of desperation and it makes you really wonder how deep his feelings were for Amber.

So, like classic House, he figures out what's wrong in the nick of time but, this time, he realizes there's no way to fix it. He's powerless and has to tell his best friend that there's no way to save Amber. The final scenes with Amber and Wilson were beautiful and I cried big sloppy tears throughout. I was also very touched by the final scenes with Cuddy and House. This is an amazing show and I can't wait for next season!

A prosecutor, detective, medical examiner and a reporter. All strong, assertive, intelligent women. They work well together, solving crimes, supporting each other and watching out for each other. What could be so wrong with this formula? Ask the men who run the network! Whew, now that I have gotten that off my chest... This final episode did not disappoint. From the very beginning, the writers have teased us with bits and pieces about Lindsay's obsession with the serial killer - "The Kiss Me Not Killer." In this episode, Lindsay learns the identity of the killer and must come face to face with him. It was tense and a good resolution (no spoilers here!). The romantic in me was very happy to see Lindsay find a man to love. Even though we'll never get to see what happens with them, I can imagine some jet setting and romantic getaways. I wish we had some more time to get to know these characters, especially Claire and her paralyzed husband. Ah...well...I'll have to fill in all of the blanks myself. Sorry to see this show go...

Words cannot begin to describe this episode. It is, by far, the funniest episode of ANY show I have ever seen. I couldn't stop laughing the entire 1/2 hour. Normally, this show is funny and each character, on their own, can be quite humorous. However, in this episode, every character was abolutely brillant, including Courtney Henggeler guest starring as Sheldon's twin sister, Missy.

My favorite character tonight was Raj. He takes a "miracle drug" to overcome extreme shyness as a test subject in a drug trial. He then competes with Howard and Leonard for Missy's attention. The involuntary hand movements were just hilarious. I loved Raj's boasts about his people being responsible for the Kama Sutra and pajamas. Howard, not to be outdone, takes credit for his people being responsible for circumcision. Of course, poor Raj's medication wears off at the worst time. When I stopped laughing, I actually felt bad for him.

This is a MUST SEE episode!

This has got to be the best episode of SVU I have seen in a long time, if not the best episode ever. Robin Williams was perfect as a manipulative, demented engineer (Merritt Rook) who creates elaborate schemes in order to avenge wrongs done to him. He comes to the attention of SVU after he tricks a Happy Burger manager into strip searching a young female employee. He represents himself in the trial and not only gets away with it but develops a fan base (Sgt. Munch included)! The plot turns more sinister when they learn that Rook's wife and son died in childbirth and the doctor responsible soon died in a terrible car accident. Rook, impersonating a police detective, calls the doctor repeatedly, making him believe he would be charged with murder for their deaths. It puts the doctor over the edge and the doctor kills himself.

When they attempt to take Rook back into custody, he ends up kidnapping Olivia. He wants Benson and Stabler to atone for the police who didn't believe him when he was a boy trying to help a young girl who was sexually abused. The most powerful scene comes at the end between Stabler and Rook. I had chills and Robin Williams' voice was freaking me out! The only reason I didn't give this episode a perfect 10 is because my logic got in the way. There's never a good reason offered for why he targeted the Happy Burger to begin with. I don't buy that he would go to such extremes because he doesn't like processed foods. But more bothersome, he's deeply impacted by the sexual abuse of an 11 year old girl from his childhood. In fact, so impacted that he wants to get even with the police. However, he manipulates an adult man into strip searching a young teenage girl, getting him to remove her clothes and has the man touching the girl. It's not very plausible and takes away, slightly, from the brillance of the plot. But, hey, other than that, an absolutely amazing episode!!!

About Me

I admit it, I'm a TV addict. TV for me is an escape from reality. I have a very serious job so when I come home and I settle in for the night, I love to lose myself in a great TV show. My biggest problem is that there are so many shows out there that I really like, I have a hard time keeping up! Thank God for TiVo!
