Las Vegas

Now that classes have started again I'm watching a lot of daytime TV. I am supposed to be studying, and hopefully that will take off soon, but I've been getting into Las Vegas. I'm psyched to find a new show that there are still new episodes of, since it's boring on TV right now...

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Yesterday I watched the Sarah Connor Chronicles. As a kid, I loved the Terminator franchise, and especially Edward Furlong in his youth. So I was resistant to this new show. I was upset by Sarah's voice - not gravelly enough. But, after watching the whole show, I'm totally on board. It was logical and well written instead of contrived to skip forward in time, and I love this lying girl Terminator. She's super funny, and a good actress.

It's the reason I watch this series. CJ used to happen in the background of my life, in the days of Jordan's family drama. And it never quite caught my interest. It wasn't until I saw the last episode and how Bug loves Lily that I became an addict. Luckily, A&E is supporting that right now by playing every episode.

But every criticism of this episode is true as well. Jordan has evolved over the series, but this storyline acts as though she were still the same. And I thought she and JD had the potential for something, which is actually important. Most of all, I tire of the contrived nature of keeping Jordan and Woody apart. I don't know what kind of life other people are living, or what kind of value systems they have. But remember when J and W had the arguement - he says "I never thought you'd say the words to someone else." and she replies "why? you have." And I felt her. If you are interested in someone, how do you pursue someone else. Again and again? Some people accept this behavior, and some are okay when they turn and say 'oh, it's you, I'll date you now.' It's why people who know loyalty will find happiness and the Woodys of the world never will. It's not what love is, or what loyalty is, or what values are. But Bug loves Lily. And I love them. It's like The Bachelorette. And I think it's about abuse of power. Why are Trista and Ryan still together? Because when he loves her and respects her and seeks to hold onto her love and she loves him, she doesn't abuse that power. But when women throw themselves at men; worship them, etc., the male reciepent of that worship typically abuses that power and uses the confidence from that situation to try and what - chase someone else? How tired.

It's difficult to review this without spoilers, so I make no promises. It really isn't very original to have the turn where the seeming victim is actually the perpetrator. Which seems a shame out of writers we know can do better. Anyway, this show really annoyed me with its negative view of human nature, and particularly, of women. I mean, what was the message - that all women are gold diggers and what you don't give them they'll steal? Hell, maybe when they have babies it's only to take your money... and if you have money, you should definately win custody based on that... Ew.

You Really Got Me

This is a great episode. It demonstrates a strong bond of friendship between Jordan and Woody, and alludes to a past for all the characters. But my favorite things is when we talk to the widow - really great crime dramas illustrate that we so often face a lot of hatred and anger when we search for the truth. Jordan admits she felt pressured to close the case and that was why she was never happy with her work. Because CJ is supposed to communicate to a wide audience (like often happens in the Law & Order), in the end the naysayers usually come around. But the actual truth is that truth-seeking is dangerous to your health and your popularity. But there is no equivocating the truth - it's the only moral choice.

I would love to have it explained to me. In my experience men so often have this kind of idea of romance: star-crossed lovers and distance... But real love is about being there every day.

I didnt' see this episode until so many years later, but when I see Willow sitting there I can't seem to stop crying. In what kind of love do you find out someone died from afar? Anyway, it must have been fun for those who were watching both when they were new to watch how they affected one another. There aren't that many crossover episodes, this certainly isn't one - this is really all about the introduction of Fred, but there are all kinds of little shadows between the two shows. How great to have two shows you created on TV at the same time; it allows for a lot.

When I was in third grade gifted we had to do the most ludicrious creative writing exercises - like write 30 seconds and then pass your story to the right. So you have this crazy mishmash that goes from Hades to Mars and includes all these different ideas. Once, I finished one with an "it's all been a dream" kinda thing. My instructor told me she was ashamed of me. I was 8. While I understand that there have been moments that I have been held to standards that were unreasonably high, and that this may be a flaw I have perpetuated on others, I don't think I'm being too harsh on TV writers. I get that they have to dumb stuff down for the masses, but the ending was the cheapest out ever written. And that's what you have to do to reel it back in when you've gone too far. Yay! I finally get "jumping the shark." Um, thanks for the illustration.

I watch too much TV. I also used to play too many video games, but my New Year's Resolution for 2008 is to not play any so that maybe I won't flunk out of grad school.
