gossip girl. ugh i'm angry.
HI EVERYONE!!!!! i haven't been on here really in ages, just briefly every now and then to check on some stuff, but i haven't had time for a blog post, or to comment on anyone else's blogs, so i'm sorry! i'm writing my final exams right now, and they've all beeen really jam-packed into a short period of time, so i haven't been able to do much. this is also going to be very brief, since i've got an exam tomorrow (MY LAST ONE!!!!! YAYYYY!!!!!) that i'm nowhere near prepared for. all i want to say. is that all you people in the US. or anywhere else. with the CW. who are watching gossip girl right now. SUCK. that is all.
for some reason, CTV (here in Canada) is apparently not airing it, and i don't know when they ever will be...so i'm VERY upset. and jealous of you all. i really must go study now though, but after exams are done, i'm sure i'll be able to pay more attention to everything on here.
PEACE!!!
happy st. patrick's day!!!
hey everyone! what's up!? happy st. patrick's day! (even though it was *technically* on saturday this year because the catholic church changed it because of "holy week", but i'm not celebrating the st.'s holiday, i'm celebrating the...soda pop holiday, but i digress). i haven't been on here in ages, mainly because once again, i've been writing 80 million exams (and by 80 million i mean...2). it's getting close to the end of the school year for me as well, so i'm going to be swamped studying for finals (since all of mine are jammed into a few days), and probably won't be on here much more than once a week. i don't really have anything new or super exciting to talk about anyways. my weekend was very tame. i missed getting together for a friend's birthday with all my friends in another city, because i had an exam on saturday night. oh yes, an exam on a saturday night. it was glorious. my school is super nice, and loves students (aka it's a jerk and hates students who pour their money into it, and doesn't care if we have a social life or not). gah i hate school. too bad i'm probably in it for at least 3 more years (1 more year undergrad + probably 2 years grad school). wow i type asides in brackets a lot. anyways.
what have you all been up to? hopefully something more exciting than writing exams on saturday nights! share some excitement with me. god knows i need a little right now. lol.
.
well, i'm off! i've got to head to cl@ss soon then come home and drink some...pops. obviously you all know what i mean, but i'm not going to advocate anything. since this is a big pop-drinking holiday, make sure you all behave yourselves, be responsible, and stay safe!
HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!!
back to school, back to school (to prove to dad i'm not a fool)
hello people!
if you didn't get the title, it was a reference to billy madison. because a) i am back at school and b) billy madison is a terrific cl@ssic (stop looking at me swaaaaaaaaan).
well, nothing too exciting really has happened. i'm getting back into cl@sses and such, which is suuuuuuuuuuuuuuper FUN (i.e. not fun at all). it snowed so much here last night, so it's so messy outside. everything was melting so there was water EVERYWHERE, and now that the temperature has dropped and it's been snowing, it's seriously treacherous outside. i wish the university was closed so i wouldn't have to leave my condo today, but it's apparently not happening. sigh
. i'm actually happy about one thing to do with school though: my final exams are finished early this year. normally, i'm always stuck here until the very last exam day, but this year, i'm done about a week before. yayyyyy!
. this means i can go home and lounge around/go to the beach for a bit before i have to start work. oh happy days.
i went and saw "the other boleyn girl" on the weekend when i was at home with my mom (we went to a matinee, it was super adorable), and then i saw it again last night with some friends because it was cheap night and i had nothing better to do after cl@ss. now, as far as movies go, it wasn't necessarily the best (the dialogue was fairly weak, and they had trouble tying things together), but i still liked it. probably because i have a bit of a crush on natalie portman (not that kind) and because i love the story of anne boleyn (even if this one's fictionalized). i'm reading the book (which the movie is based around, and which is fictionalized as well) right now, and i've finished 450/700+ pages since i bought it on monday (i wish i could do that with something school-related...say...economics, but apparently no). the book is a BIT more historically accurate, in so much that it follows the timeline of the actual events better, whereas in the movie, you feel as if the whole story happened within a year, which it didn't, since henry viii courted anne boleyn for about 7 years before marrying her and making her queen. anyways, i still liked the movie. and the performances were terrific. natalie portman was fabulous as always, and gave a seriously amazing portrayal of anne boleyn (who was such a b*tch and amazing). kristin scott thomas as lady boleyn was really good as well. her character was completely different from the book, but she was a huge asset to the film. i was even impressed with scarlett johansson, which is shocking. as i said before, i usually find her boring in most things, but she was actually really good in this. eric bana was pretty meh as henry viii. he is a good actor, yes, but he doesn't really have a "kingly" screen presence. you don't necessarily believe that he is a king when he comes on screen. the costumes were GORGEOUS, and so were the sets. they alone almost made me want to live back in that time, but the story sure doesn't. i'd rather not be whored out to the king so my dad could gain status and money, thank you very much. anyways though, even though it definitely was not a stellar movie or anything, i really liked it. but (even though i'm not finished it) i would recommend the book over the movie, since everything is obviously more detailed, and so probably easier to follow. on the other hand though, if you'd rather have things fast-paced, then the movie would be for you. i'm on page 479 (i just checked) and anne isn't even queen yet (although she's about to be).
aaaaaaaaanyways, that's my brief little movie review. right now i am procrastinating going to the gym in my building. right now i'm thinking the CONS are outweighing the PROS, though. (PROS: i wouldn't have to go later when it's busier. CONS: it's cold and i'm snug in my bedroom, i want to finish my book, i have so much homework to do, and i'm tired and lazy). hmm. so no gym. glad that's settled. maybe i'll just do some little exercises around the condo. we'll see how i feel ![]()
so, i'm either going to go exercise, or end up back in my bed reading (this one's probably more likely). au revoir, and i hope you all have a super day!!
PS: gossip girl comes back in april. score!

well. i haven't been on here in a loooooong long time, besides maybe 2 minutes to check the odd little tidbit. i just wanted to let you all know that i definitely haven't forgotten about you! i had just been very, very busy with school, and now i'm at home, so i was busy catching up with people i hadn't seen in a while, and just relaxing after a grueling midterm schedule. i hope you all have been well! and happy belated birthday, ivy! i see that it was on saturday, hope you had a good one!
.
now...i don't really have much exciting to say. all i really talked about last time was the spice girls...and i think that was basically the peak of my life...it's all downhill from here
. lol, jokes. ...but seriously. i've just been hanging around home. on the weekend, i got together with all my other friends, but they've gone back to their schools now (blahhhh everyone always has a different reading week than me), so i am suuuuper bored. i've been bugging my mom and dad a lot, and watching some of my favourite movies (since i haven't had time to sit down with a movie in FOREVER). so, i watched "v for vendetta" and "transformers" yesterday, and "lotr: fellowship of the ring" today. i also watched "let's go to prison" with a few of my friends on the weekend. it was relatively hilarious, although nothing too special. i do love will arnett though. he is amazing. i've gotten super into "arrested development" lately, so i love him for that, AND he's canadian. which is always great. duh. and then last night he just happened to be on conan (promoting his new will ferrell movie), so i got to see more of him.
.
i watched the oscars sunday, and actually watched the ENTIRE show, which is very unusual for me. usually i just watch red carpet and then bits and pieces of the actual awards show as i flip through other shows. they were pretty meh this year. jon stewart is a good host, and definitely had some good lines, but they were nothing extraordinary; nothing too shocking happened. basically all the major awards went to who i predicted they would go to (even though i hadn't seen most of the movies besides atonement...shame on me). the fashion was also pretty meh. all the dresses were relatively standard. not to say they weren't NICE or anything, but they weren't anything out of the ordinary. my favourite look of the night was probably anne hathaway. i looooooooved her dress (marchesa knows how to outfit the red carpet girls), and it was a huge step up from her disaster of a dress last year. katherine heigl's head looked giant as usual, and gary busey lived up to his reputation of scaring the crap out of people...honestly, i felt scared for jennifer garner! (if you didn't see it, he gave her this giant hug and kiss while she was being interviewed by ryan seacrest, and she looked genuinely scared for her life). nicole kidman's 1399 (or maybe it was 1299) carat necklace was gorgeous, although her dress was a little blah (compared to her usual standard), but then again, she is pregnant, so i will let it slide. jessica alba definitely showed that she knows how to rock the maternity chic though, as her dress/jewelry was gorgeous. miley cyrus annoyed the h*ll out of me once again, and so did ryan seacrest. and jack nicolson was loving the show as always...seriously, even if the host was bombing the show, jack would still be front row and laughing. he's always there for the cameras. what a great guy.
hmmm...i don't think i really have much more to say...uhmmm, i'm going to see "the other boleyn girl" on friday probably, which i've been looking forward to. natalie portman is one of my favourite actresses (seriously, she's fabulous), although i could do without scarlett johansson. everyone is always talking about her "range" as an actress, but i honestly find her super bland and boring. mmm and i love erica bana, although i definitely predict his screen time being completely overshadowed by scarlett and then completely trumped by natalie. the reviews i've read so far have been mixed, so i'm looking forward to it even more, because i really am not sure what to expect from it now.
my valentine's day was super boring (i know it happened ages ago, but i guess i may as well mention it). i went out on a date with a guy i really liked, but he turned out to be waaaaaaay too intense, and kiiind of boring. i really don't mean to sound mean or anything, but i was expecting it to be way better. we'll probably go out again sometime after my break, but i can't see anything too amazing coming from it. i was very disappointed. i hate it when that happens. when you think someone is so wicked, and you're so excited to go out with them, and then they just turn out to be completely different than you thought. it's pretty frustrating. ahhh, oh well. hopefully everyone else had a good valentine's day, and better dates! (kyle, i see your's went very well, which i'm glad to see, seeing as you put so much thought and planning into it! bravo! lol.
).
ok though, it is READING week...so i should probably go do some reading (aka homework), even though i'd rather just go watch another movie. siiiiigh. if i don't do anything over the break though, i'm going to be so behind when i get back to school. it's not going to be a good scene. lol
. well, bye everyone, and have a good tuesday night!
ETA - i also apparently went up a level (and it's 25% done, too!) which is shocking, seeing as i haven't done anything on here forever. but, i've got to say, it's nice to be an autobot! woooo transformers!
it was...the. best. night. ofmylife.
so, after about a week, i am back here at tv.com, where i belong.
first of all...oh my god SPICE GIRLS. it was honestly the most fun i've ever had. EVER. the concert was SO so so so SO amazing. as soon as the lights went down, you couldn't even hear yourself think everyone was screaming so loud. i couldn't talk for about 3 days after, because i already had a cold, and screaming for 2 hours straight on top of that did not improve things. but it was absolutely, 100% worth it. the girls were AMAZING. they sang everything live (with maybe the exception of posh, but she's still fierce, so whatevah), the choreopgraphy was amazing, the sets and visuals were SPECTACULAR and the costumes (designed by Cavalli) were so pretty! everything was sooooo sparkly, it looked great! every single set they did was perfect. i could not have asked for more. it was SO satisfying. here are some highlights (aka my personal favourites from the concert):
- Emma Bunton aka BABY SPICE. god i love her. she is maybe the single most adorable person on the entire planet. everything she did was super cute. even though she's 31, she is still baby spice. i swear to god, she will still be adorable when she's 75. and i loved her solo performance (she sang "Maybe"). i love the song, and the way she performed it was awesome. (also, she has the cutest baby i've ever seen --baby's baby-- so she gets extra points for that).
-the girls' (minus Geri) performance of "Holler". this has always been one of my least favourite singles of their's, but it was easily the best set of the night. the visuals behind them were soooo COOL (and i NEVER use that word). it was basically "comic porn", aka it was the girls as comic characters just really sexed up. it even moved to the beat of the song and everything. and the boys on LEASHES. yes that's right, leashes. the girls strutted the catwalk with boys in front of them on leashes, jumping at their command. it was so raunchy and excellent. (maybe a little bit sexist...but who cares, it was awesome).
-Geri's solo performance of "It's Raining Men". she put in SO much energy, she was really into the song, and the dance, and all the boys around her were picking her up, throwing her, twirling her. it was just such high energy, such a great performance. it was SUPER fun.
-the fact that Victoria Beckham aka POSH SPICE knows that she is absolutely useless. while the other girls gave their hardcore solo performances, she did a 30-second walk down the catwalk. but it was FIERCE. she reeeeeally knows how to work it. (on another note, i don't understand why she has become such a favourite. people around me were screaming SO loud for her...she's useless!...although i do love them ALL).
-the jazzed-up and sped-up version of "Too Much". i know a few people who were disappointed the girls didn't sing the original, slower version, but i loved this one. it was a lot of fun. the girls started off the number in changing stalls on the stage, with (staged) dialogue of them changing, and being a bit naughty. oh how i loved it!
-that they performed "The Lady is a Vamp" even though it wasn't one of their singles. it's one of my favourite songs of their's, and it set up the night nicely ("ladies and gents can you please take your seats and we hope that you enjoy the show").
-just being there and the girls themselves in general. they dominated a huge part of my childhood, and they will be dominating my speakers for the next few weeks, seeing as it's all i've been listening to since i got back from the concert. oh, and i LOOOOOVE the t-shirt i got. it's got the girls on the front, and it's got sparkly text, and all the concert cities on the back. it was such a gooooooooooood night!!
as you can see, i'm still pretty excited that i was there. it was seriously just so so so so so so much fun! annnnnd it was a nice break before my brutal week that's coming up. i have sooo many assignments due and lots of midterms, so it's going to be terrible. i'm glad i'll have the concert to think about while i'm struggling through mountains of work. so yeah, i probably won't be on here much in the next 2 weeks, but i'll try to get on here every so often (when i'm desperately seeking a distraction from my work).
well, i hope you all have/are having an excellent weekend! i just got back from a midterm, and am about to start some readings...wooooooooooooooooot! (ugh, i hate school. it is useless). ciao for now!
PS - how glad is everyone about the strike finally coming to an agreement!? and the fact that gossip girl still might get up to 9 more episodes before the season ends!? yesssss, score!

Samantha Who? Avg Score: 7.39 Total Ratings: 1426 Total Reviews: 29 Users who agree: 2 |
Why does this show have such low ratings here at tv.com? I mean, I looked through the episode ratings and they've been placed in the 5-7 range, whereas I would place them in the 8-9 range at least.
Perhaps it's because I've always had a soft spot for Christina Applegate (she has always been a fantastic comedic actress, ever since her classic Married...With Children Days)...but I'm not judging the show just because I'm predisposed to like Christina Applegate. I actually do like this show. I find it to be extremely funny. All the episodes I watched yesterday had me laughing out loud many times.
And it's not just her character either. The supporting characters do a good job in their roles as well. I like her friends, and especially her parents. Apart from the character comedy, the situational comedy is also very funny. I guess it probably plays a bigger role in the show, seeing as Samantha is always finding herself in ridiculous situations because she obviously doesn't remember how to do lots of things, or remember anything about herself. For instance, when she's at Todd's apartment trying to cook by herself, and she puts oregano in the sauce, which she then finds out she was allergic to. It was hilarious. She's always just a disaster waiting to happen.
Anyways, this has been a brief review, but I really don't have much more to say on the show besides the fact that I don't understand why it's rated so low...obviously not everyone finds the same things I do funny...but honestly, I don't see how it can be rated THAT low.

Gossip Girl Avg Score: 8.79 Total Ratings: 4589 Total Reviews: 181 |
Now, I'll admit, the pilot did not completely satisfy me. As a reader of the books, I thought they made too many changes, and I wasn't quite comfortable with them.
However, as the series has progressed, I've come to understand the changes made to the characters/events in the books for the show were for the best. I am enjoy the show far more thoroughly than I ever did the books. The books were fluff - although the characters were quite developed - they did not provide any form of real substance whatsoever. The show, on the other hand, is starting to pick up and cover what the books themselves lacked. Gossip Girl is starting to deal more believably with the issues it faces than the book ever did.
It is of course a difficult situation when something is being transferred from paper to TV or film, but the producers/creators have handled it formidably well. They have made necessary changes for TV. The main change that sticks out at me is Serena. In the books, Serena used to be WILD wild - she was a party girl extraordinaire. When the book Serena came back from abroad, she was so...well, depressing. And that's apparently why they changed her character to seem a bit more, "Lively" (ha great pun, I know, I know) - or else she would be too depressing for primetime TV. Also, the other characters, such as Blair, seem a bit more toned down, which to me, makes them seem all the more real. For instance, Blair was a complete psycho in the books, she was a real terror, and always came up with the most ridiculous plots to reach her ends.
The characters in the books seemed so contrived. Now though, they are extremely believable as people actually living in today's world.
Which brings me to the acting cast. They are doing a terrific job of bringing depth and realness to the characters. Leighton Meester is especially great as Blair - not only is she spot on with Blair's cattiness, but she is also able to genuinely portray Blair's emotions and show us why Blair is who she is. Blair's other half, Serena, is also adequately played by Blake Lively, who does a fine job of bringing to light Serena's carefree attitude towards life. The boys, as well as being very nice to look at, are also doing a good job, although I do think Chace Crawford is a little too brooding as Nate. Chuck is perfect though. Ed Westwick is doing an excellent job of Chuck's slyness and manipulative ways, and more currently, his underlying softness. Even the adults I love. Whereas with shows like The OC and Beverly Hills, 90210, I could have cared less about what the adults were doing, I actually am enjoying their storylines and respective roles in the show. I especially love Matthew Settle as Rufus and Kelly Rutherford as Lily. They have a great chemistry together and play a perhaps more grounded role in the show, they, unlike their children, are maybe a bit more settled in life. Overall, the ensemble cast is fantastic together.
Now, the themes shown in Gossip Girl are also well-done. They are actually themes which we are facing in our society today: money can't buy you happiness, the difficulties of being a teenage girl, everyone has a secret, etc. Since they are all so easy to relate to, it gives the show a more real element. Sure, they are maybe played out a bit to the maximum, but the show is here to entertain us, not bore us, so it has to be a little bit over-the-top. Even still, it is not too much that it renders itself unbelievable. Each character has their own certain persona as well: Blair is insecure, Jenny is naive, Dan is lonely, Chuck is perversive, Nate is lost, Serena is reformed. The show just brings together so many real themes which makes it all the more watchable.
The visual appeal of the show is also very pleasing. The sets are beautiful and the clothes to die for. The fashions of Gossip Girl are actually starting to gain recognition for the fact that they are tasteful - the girls and boys both look extremely stylish without being exhibitionists. The costume designers for the show have done a simply amazing job of creating a unique, individual style for each and every character on the show, from their schoolwear to their formalwear.
Lastly, I would like to commend Gossip Girl on its music. Alex Patsavas, the music supervisor (who worked on the OC and Grey's Anatomy, both of which have been critically acclaimed for their terrific soundtracks), is creating a great sound for the show. She mixes many indie bands with top 40 hits, which brings the cool music element to the show. As well as hearing familiar tracks, a viewer is able to hear a wide array of tracks they maybe have never heard before. I think Gossip Girl is really going to bring a lot of indie bands to the surface, just like the OC did, which is great, because there are so many good ones out there (The Virgins, for example, who have already been used multiple times in Gossip Girl).
Well, I suppose that's it...it was rather lengthy, and I think that's as much as I can think of to write.
I just want to finish by saying that Gossip Girl really IS a good show, even if it is sometimes a little over the top, and I am hoping that it will be able to maintain its spark and flourish over time for many seasons to come.

Beverly Hills, 90210 Avg Score: 8.56 Total Ratings: 2036 Total Reviews: 112 Users who agree: 1 |
Out of the classifications, there were so many I could have chosen; "ahead of its time" was going to be the one. 90210 WAS ahead of its time. It dealt with so many of the issues faced by teenagers, but not often portrayed in the media. Date rape, drugs, suicide, teen pregnancy. All the big ones. Anything you could possibly think you would face in your years as a teenager, you could find on this show. It was in some ways groundbreaking.
I went with "classic" though, because that's really what 90210 is. It ran for 10 years, and many, like me, still hold a soft spot for it and its characters in our hearts. I was completely thrilled when TvTropolis started showing it in Canada, and even more thrilled when they began releasing the season dvds (even if they couldn't get all the rights to the original music and had to change it around a bit...totally worth it).
Although the show had some downfalls and some weak storylines, it still held its own during the 10 long years it was on the air. Even if there was a weak episode or 2, it could never turn me off of this show.
And sure, it has many (many MANY) corny, lame, cheesy moments, but that's what I love it for, that's why it's a classic.

Sadness for Chuck aside though, the rest of the episode progressed quite well. Although...it was a little OC-esque if I do say so. I mean, the punch at Cotillion (Jimmy Cooper anyone?)...the sick grandmother (Sandy's mother, hello?)...and the choice between love or money (this is indigenous to ANY show I believe...there's always someone paid off to go away for good, am I right?).
This episode did build quite a lot of character, too. Jenny once again is torn between fitting in with the Upper East Side-rs, or staying true to herself. We find more out about Lily and Rufus's past (which I love by the way...hoping they get together sometime soon), the family tradition among the van Der Woodsens, and that Blair, when happy, can actually be a decent human being (love her anyways).
Let's just wait and see what happens next episode (sigh, not until the 18th)...when Blair's father comes (always emotional), Vanessa is tossed back into the picture, and on top of everything - it's Christmas - always a crazy time. Can't wait!

But ok, this episode...while it wasn't awful or anything, was just boring.
Does no one remember the good old days where you would be laughing hysterically at George & Izzie's antics, the cut-throat competition between the interns, or Meredith's horrible luck?
The show just isn't like that anymore. I watch it, because as a fan, I'm dedicated to the show...but it's just not developing anymore. I guess since there was so much development early on, it's hard to keep that up. The show is just going right back to where it started though -- Meredith and Derek issues, Addison out of the picture, and Alex being a complete d*ck -- only with more complications. George and Izzie being stupidly in love. Derek being an ungrateful jacka$$ that he has the woman he loves with him; throwing it all away just for the Chief's position. And Christina and Burke are just annoying. They're two of my least favourite characters, so this might seem biased, but it doesn't change the fact that they're annoying. Burke is thoughtful and nice, and Christina is just plain unpleasant. She doesn't even care about the wedding. Or maybe she does. But I don't think she does. She's just so...horrid.
Anyways, my review really doesn't seem like it has much to do with the episode. Buuuuuuut that's because nothing happened!!! George and Izzie realized there in love (ooooh shocker, they already knew this). Christina and Burke decided on a wedding cake (oh my gosh, no way, a wedding cake!?). Addison made a poor sex choice (uhhh when has she not done that before). Derek's being a jerk (...). The Chief may not retire (uhm, you've already made the decision not to before, just make up your mind already).
See what I said before? About it sounding like I don't like the show? The review is quite negative, albeit truthful. I just don't like where the show's headed...if it's getting this boring now, and they have to constantly be changing everything SO dramatically to the point where everything that happens now has happened before...it's in trouble.
