Viacom vs you. Google must divulge the viewing habits of every user who has ever watched any video on YouTube, a US court has ruled.

The ruling comes as part of Google's legal battle with Viacom over allegations of copyright infringement.

Digital rights group the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) called the ruling a "set-back to privacy rights".

The viewing log, which will be handed to Viacom, contains the log-in ID of users, the computer IP address (online identifier) and video clip details.

While the legal battle between the two firms is being contested in the US, it is thought the ruling will apply to YouTube users and their viewing habits everywhere.

Viacom, which owns MTV and Paramount Pictures, has alleged that YouTube is guilty of massive copyright infringement.

The UK's Premier League association is also seeking c-lassaction status with Viacom on the issue, alleging YouTube, which was bought by Google in 2006, has been used to watch football highlights.

Legal action

When it initiated legal action in March 2007 Viacom said it had identified about 160,000 unauthorised clips of its programmes on the website, which had been viewed more than 1.5 billion times.

Following the launch of its billion-dollar lawsuit, YouTube introduced filtering tools in an effort to prevent copyright materials from appearing on the site.

The US court declined Viacom's request that Google be forced to hand over the source code of YouTube, saying it was a "trade secret" that should not be disclosed.

But it said privacy concerns expressed by Google about handing over the log were "speculative".

Google's senior litigation counsel Catherine Lacavera said in a statement: "We are disappointed the court granted Viacom's over-reaching demand for viewing history.

"We will ask Viacom to respect users' privacy and allow us to anonymise the logs before producing them under the court's order."

The ruling will see the viewing habits of millions of YouTube users given to Viacom, totalling more than 12 terabytes of data.

Viacom said it wanted the data to "compare the attractiveness of allegedly infringing video with that of non-infringing videos."

YouTube and Google had "compelled" it to go to court, Viacom said, "by continuing to defend their illegal and irresponsible conduct and profiting from copyright infringement, when they could be implementing the safe and legal user generated content experience they promise".

It said it would not be asking for any "personally identifiable information" of any user.

"Any information that we or our outside advisors obtain will be used exclusively for the purpose of proving our case against You Tube and Google (and) will be handled subject to a court protective order and in a highly confidential manner."

'Erroneous ruling'

Leading privacy expert Simon Davies told BBC News that the privacy of millions of YouTube users was threatened.

He said: "The chickens have come home to roost for Google.

"Their arrogance and refusal to listen to friendly advice has resulted in the privacy of tens of millions being placed under threat."

Mr Davies said privacy campaigners had warned Google for years that IP addresses were personally identifiable information.

Google pledged last year to anonymise IP addresses for search information but it has said nothing about YouTube data.

Mr Davies said: "Governments and organisations are realising that companies like Google have a warehouse full of data. And while that data is stored it is under threat of being used and putting privacy in danger."

The EFF said: "The Court's erroneous ruling is a set-back to privacy rights, and will allow Viacom to see what you are watching on YouTube.

"We urge Viacom to back off this overbroad request and Google to take all steps necessary to challenge this order and protect the rights of its users."

The body said the ruling was also potentially unlawful because the log data did contain personally identifiable data.

The court also ruled that Google disclose to Viacom the details of all videos that have been removed from the site for any reason.

So there you go my poor youtube users, including me unfortunatly, everyone with a youtube account is in danger of their privacy being invaded, and Viacom seeing everything we've ever watched, I've never even heard of Viacom until now. I can't believe this...the politicians are blind, and so is everyone who thought this was a good idea...they just don't get it, whether or not Viacom keeps it secret...once it is seen not only privacy violated, the privacy that was sworn to be kept by youtube and google. But not only that, people will never be able to give out their information to create an account for anything again. If this goes forward and people's privacy is violated, it is a message that sites will not fight for you, they will keep themselves safe, meaning, no one will be able to create an account anywhere, without fear that their information will be comprimised and outside parties which no one has ever heard of will have access to their info if a situation as unpredictable as this happens. The politicians and lawyers, wonder why they are hated, it's because they hold enough power to destroy peoples thoughts and force a rethink on what they thought was as trivial as just making an account for plain enjoyment, what does it mean, this is gonna destroy all we hold dear!...lol ok I'm being a bit overdramatic...but still makes you wonder what is next before politicians and covering for yourself breaks another thing you never expected to be violated

so basically every human who goes on the internet ...well anyways the US government, has told google they want them to reveal the names of everyone who goes on youtube and watches a movie or a show or whatever that is copyrighted...ya dumb huh? I mean 1 invasion of privacy, and 2 whatever judge said that clearly doesn't know the internet, oh what's the word kinda....WORKS FOR THE PLANET! , what is he gonna sue people in countries clear across the Earth? I mean WOW! he he...so ya that's just something you'd wanna know, google is yet to say if they will appeal or not but kinda creepy to think that you could get a law suite for just surfing the internet. Well my bro and my dad had a fight, I was right infront of them, so I know, no need to go into details, anyways I told my bro how dad was a bit worried and what he felt, I asked him what he thought my bro said "I don't have an answer because I don't care...I'm going to sleep now". That I don't care right there meant, he didn't care what could happen to him with what happened tonight, he doesn't care about his future...all of it, not caring...what worried me is I've defended the guy from my parents before...when they get angered at him...anyways hearing that I don't care, means everything I said about him. Was all for not...kinda a shocker you know

Ok here is the story, it angers me so much

Ok for physics our final project was to build a motor, ok I did that I got an 87% on the motor part great right? That's an A here. Well after I handed in my write up, a few days later our teacher comes very p*ssed off and starts ranting on to us about how angered she is that the project was dumbed down for our year. It used to be a full on lab report, hypothesis, purpose, history of DC motor all of it! Now they brought it down to materials, procedure and diagram, so she's now got a personal vendetta against our year for it and is like "YOU THINK YOU HAVE IT EASY YOU GOT ANOTHER THING COMING! I WILL MARK IT SO HARD!" She calls all of our write ups pretty much garbage, not flat out but it is implyed. Anyways, her super hard marking, drops my 87 to a 60!!!!??? Because apparantly it was too general she wanted flat out measurements, I asked one of my friends who did this also, she did not put measurements and she did not get a bad grade, she actually got a pretty good mark, now our teacher also gave us a sheet saying 70% for the motor, 30% for the write up, then when we ask her she goes "I lied" it was more of a 60-40 marking scheme! Then later on she tells me, me only! "I'm surprised you made it to grade 11, with the stuff you hand in. You shouldn't have been allowed in this class!" Today she also got p*ssed off at me for asking for help on something, and anyways back to the motor. Now this has caused my mark to not move, and I needed a higher grade, even if I get 100% on the final exam most I can get is about a 70% (B-) as a final grade, and clearly she don't care! I WORKED MY A$$ OFF HERE AND THIS IS A HARD COURSE! I only took it because if I did it now I wouldn't have to in university. Ok so I'm think it is stupid that my mark suffers because she has a vendetta against our year now, not to mention next year she won't even do the motor because she's going to a new school. Now 1 person, she claims she hates the teacher but I know she doesn't, says "We deserve it, you just don't like it because you have a bad grade." I think she thinks that because she got a better grade because the teacher is like in love with her, but few people will listen to me because yes I did get a bad grade. But so did most of the class, meaning that it was the teacher's fault right?! Anyways clearly she doesn't care, so I'm scr*wed because of her, this useless project has put me in the cr*p hole, I swear I want to hurt her so bad right now! . I can understand that some teachers mark harder, but with final exams and final projects, her job is to mark us based on this year, not anyone else, there should be a minimum standard also, she can stuff her anger up her a$$ for all I care, why should I suffer cause she doesn't like how we got the project?!

As a bit of a joke, one of the kids drew an arrow to her on the black board and it saying "I'm MEAN!" Oh tid bit, a lot of the kids dropped cause she was horrible. Lastly, what angers me is I'm totally alone on this, no one in athourity can actually help me on this one! Also, there's been a big change in me, no I'm not talking about a body change...lol wow I hope there's none left I mean I'm 17, if there's something left THEN SOMETHING IS WRONG HERE!
