Politics '08

First of all thanks to everyone for your support in my previous post. I appreciate it.

What I want to do today is weigh in on the 2008 Presidential race.

Now I know most of you all aren't old enough to vote this election cycle, but many of you are. I'd like to hear your opinions regardless of age, though.

On to my opinion. Early in 2007 when candidates were just getting their campaigns going, my buddy told me about this one guy (and that already disqualifies Hillary ) and I decided to look into him, as well as some of the other candidates.

I'm pretty conservative in my views so naturally I registered as a Republican. And the Republican field was abundant with candidates. So I began the narrowing down.

Well the guy I support now is the same guy I got to know early last year. Through watching his speeches, researching his views, etc. I was very impressed with his leadership ability and optimistic outlook for Anerica.

The candidate I want for President is Mitt Romney. He spent 25 years of his life in the private sector as a very successful businessman, where he accumulated a lot of personal wealth. In 2002, he was chosen to run the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, which were plagued by scandals and financial problems. Mitt Romney turned those games around, which occurred only months after 9/11, and uplifted the spirits of Americans after its most devastating attack in its history.

Then there's Massachusetts. From 2003-2007 Romney served as governor of Massachusetts. Results are seemingly mixed, but he made some very notable accomplishments. In MA, he was able to work with a Democratic legislature to get everyone in the state health care, without the kind of socialized medicine Hillary Clinton. He also inherited a $3 billion deficit and turned it into a surplus within his term without raising taxes. Think about that: Romney solved two of the major issues in this national election as a governor of MA. As President he would offer states incentives to try out and come up with their own health care systems and not insititute "Hillarycare." He would also be able to cut out the waste and duplication in the federal government and balance the budget during his administration.

Another advantage: as a businessman, he has been in the economy, seeing how jobs are created and lost. He would offer unique insight into the economy and could prevent us from moving into a recession. He has proposed a broad economic stimulus plan (worth over $200 billion) that would, among other things, lower the income tax rate for those making roughly $95,000 a year and less to 7.5% from 10%, retroactive to 2007. He'd also eliminate payroll taxes on workers over age 65. And he'd eliminate taxes for those making $200,000 or less on capital gains, interest, etc. View his full stimulus plan at mittromney.com.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw this out there. Let the debating begin!

Avatar Guide Retirement.

As you probably have noticed, I have been retired as Editor of the Avatar guide. This was not done with my consent, but rather by the TV.com staff.

The new editor will see the burden that is running the Avatar guide. I feel very fortunate to have held the position for so long.

That being said, maybe it is time for change. I've been sensing a new direction is being taken here for a little while now and I wish the next editor good luck.

I will state for the record that TV.com forced me out at their own discretion, and even though I respect their decision, I disagree with it. Forget the hours of time put into the guide and forum, a few submissions go a few days late and all of a sudden I am retired. It's unfortunate and I hope TV.com does not continue this policy, or they will lose some really great members.

As for me, I'll still lurk around here occasionally, but probably a lot less frequently than in times past. And I can offer suggestions to the new editor, if they would like it.

So, all in all it was fun and I'm glad I could meet all the awesome people here. Though I'm sorry this is the way it had to go down.

Enjoying Avatar Over At Dongbufeng.net,

Pooldude256 - Jake

[Insert Random Title Here]

Seems like forever since I've written a blog here on TV.com. Got so much stuff going on.

Right now I'm enjoying some time off. Not working right now, not going to school either. I will go back next year to a community college, most likely, and will look for another job soon after the new year begins.

Guess I should talk about Avatar. I have been hearing a lot of complaints about this season, and I believe those people are full of it. I think every episode has been great so far. IMO, "Nightmares and Daydreams" would be the weakest link in the chain so far, but it's still not that bad (well maybe it is...).

My personal favorites are "The Avatar and the Firelord" and "The Puppetmaster," not to mention the Day of Black Sun's two episodes. Those four episodes alone make up for anything that was "lacking" in the beginning of the season. "The Beach" was very different, "Sokka's Master" was great, and "The Painted Lady" gave Katara a new "identity." "The Headband" did a fair job of showing the propoganda in Fire Nation schools. "The Awakening" has been trampled on because it wasn't as epic as the season 2 finale, but it served it's purpose, as the bridge from S2 to S3. The Ozai scene may not have been as dramatic as it could have been (which is primarily the director's fault). Still it was a great episode. "The Runaway" had a little bit of character development, but not much, so that's near the bottom of the list. The above mentioned weakest-link was just plain scary and felt like an LSD trip the whole time. I didn't like it, and right before what are the most two important episodes, it seemed very much out of place.

Anyway, this season has been high on character development and not as much action, which I think is necessary going into the second half of the season. Even starting at 310-311, the second half of season 3 will most certainly have plenty of battles and epicness that has not been present so far, especially now that obviously the Gang has been exposed. I look forward to the last 10 episodes, from here on out the season picks up and I feel confident people will stop bashing it then.

I also want to address the writers strike, since this affects TV greatly. Like most Americans, I support the writers here. The studios are claiming that shows streamed online are for promotional purposes only, but when you watch an episode of a show online, there are ads. And they aren't giving those ads away free. The studios have enough that they can let the writers in on a little bit. The studios wouldn't have any revenue if not for the writers.

Today is my birthday. I turn 19. So what would be the most amazing present ever? Seeing my Steelers beat the undefeated Patriots, of course! Yes the game starts in like a half an hour, and I am looking forward to it, because the Steelers have a great shot at winning it today. So LET'S GO STEELERS!

That's it for this blog. I'm sure I'll write again in a few months.

Busy, busy, busy...

Seems like I'm a busy bee this time of year. Really haven't had the time to come here and write a new blog since Thursday, which was when my high school graduation was! Yes it feels incredibly awesome to finally be done!! The ceremony itself was pretty boring (and hot - we had it at the American Music Theater and supposedly there was AC on there but I don't really think so, that or it just didn't work right). And yes it was a formal ceremony so I had to dress up for once in my life, even though no one really saw what I was wearing underneath my gown. Oh well...yeah if you haven't got there yet look forward to speeches, awards and a VERY long waiting time when calling names for getting your diploma cover (that too - we got out diploma cover first then had to get our diplomas afterwards, which was total chaos). It does depend on how many others are in your graduating class though (299 total in mine - I want to know the idiot who dropped out and took it under 300).

Anyway yeah work is going good. Some people are still idiots whom I want to be able to freely kill, but for the most part it's not too terribly bad. I get a raise soon so that's awesome. I'm now working 30+ hours/week.

Between work and hanging out with friends and upcoming trips and all I really haven't really been on here much as of late. But whatever.

Now that you're caught up, feel free to move on with your lives.

Done with high school!!

As of about 9:30 this morning (after my english final concluded) I am officially done with high school!!  That's right, baby!!!  Seems like only yesterday I was starting my senior year, and I'm not sure if it's completely hit me yet.  Done with high school, man it feels good.  There is the small matter of graduation, which will take place next Thursday, June 7th (after 9 hours of graduation practice that Monday, Tuesday and Wed.).  But for all intensive purposes I am finished with public secondary schooling!

So where-to now?  Like I said before I'll be attending HACC in the fall and spending about a year or two there, then transferring to a four-year school to complete the rest of my credits.  I want to major in Business Admin, so that oughta be fun.

Other than that not much new.  Well I guess it's "officially" summer for me.  Awesome...

This show is fabulous. On the surface you might think "Oh, look it's another teen soap opera like The OC". Well I assure you that's not what this show is. It amazes me every week with the actual drama (not stupid teen problems either).

This show centers around a high school in Texas which happens to have an elite football team. Coach Eric Taylor is in his first year on the job as a head coach and is leading a talented team poised for the state title. However, in the first game, Senior QB Jason Street (who Taylor mentored as QBs coach) goes to make the game-winning tackle and is injured on the play. He ends up paralyzed and now must adapt to living life in a wheelchair.

Meanwhile, Matt Saracen has to take over as QB. Along the way he develops a crush on the coach's daughter, Julie.

There are serious issues in this show that make it unlike any other on TV. They go head on with some tough issues. I highly recommend watching this show!

Avatar Day

The plot and story of 'Avatar Day' was a good one, but I believe they made Sokka too outof character in this episode. Although I thought Katara's dialouge was mostly in-character, and the lines with Sokka were most certainly meant for comic relief, I still believe Sokka was too out of character for my liking.

History is one of my favorite subjects, and the history of this show is so deep and they could go so far with it. I liked how Kyoshi told of how Kyoshi Isle came about creation, as freedom from Chin the Conqueror. No wonder she has a statue in her name, and the island named after her.

In a post on another message board, I put out a theory that Avatar Kyoshi ha done something for the greater good, but hurt the town (now known as Chin), and that was somewhat right, as she separated her people from Chin the conqueror's wrath, but killed Chin in the process.

The Mayor of Chin was a little insane if you ask me. The whole part at the end "Avatar Day" will now be a celebration of how Avatar Aang saved the town of Chin..." was a bit weird and it felt rushed to me. One minute they want to kill him (or "burn him in oil") the next their making him a hero.

And "community service" didn't feel right to me either. I mean that's more or less a Western idea, and they couldn't come up with a more Asian name for it? It just didn't feel right.

I'll give the writers the benefit of the doubt here and give this episode a good rating. However it could have been better?

But it makes you wonder. Episode 105 was silly, episode 205 was even sillier, how will episode 305 be?

The Library
Avg Score: 9.41    Total Ratings: 374    Total Reviews: 59
This episode portrays exactly why Avatar: The Last Airbender is a top-notch series loved by millions. The episode was written brilliantly, with a touch of humor (lots of fun poked at Toph's blindness, but it was inevitable that at some point they would use that to their comedic advantage) and much drama. Having the library founded by a spirit is a nice touch as well.

The only flaw with this episode was it was a little too rushed, and I believe the professor was very flawed. How could Aang and Sokka check ALL those dates (and it didn't take two seconds to check a different date either - and they had to check several months) when the library was just about tumbling down, only to see a few seconds go by. That puzzled me. The professor was too concerned with learning rather than saving his life (I doubt Wan Shi Tong let him live).

Overall, though, it was a very good episode. And it most certainly was not Toph's fault :P

Nickelodeon should be ashamed to air this show. First off the concept is an extremely old, unoriginal and very flat. There's just something about this show that makes it so horrible. Oh, it's the writing/acting/directing/everything.

Watching this show once, I could not believe how it made it to the air. Oh, Emma Roberts is related to movie industry superstar Julia Roberts, that's how. You can bet Julia is using her influence in the entertainment industry to keep this show on the air.

It follows the day-to-day routine of Addie Singer, a 13-year-old middle school girl. She is obsessed with her self, extremely insecure, and very snobby/bratty/preppy/whatever you want to call it. In the show she's either at her school talking with friends, at a local restaurant talking with friends, or at home disrespecting her parents or playing her guitar and singing horribly.

This is potentially the most stereotypical show ever. Addie's attitude is so horrible it's not even funny. What she has to realize, as well as people across this country, is that life sucks, it wasn't meant to be easy, and in all the billions of people who have inhabited this planet, at least one of them had to have had (or is having) a worse life than yours. And just be thankful your here. As much as we don't want to admit it, young kids (3 and younger) do sometimes die, whether their parents drown them in the tub, or their heart just can't go on. As for parents, you should be thankful you actually have people who care for you, and don't try to drown you in the tub.

Getting back to the point, Unfabulous is a waste of time to watch. If you like hearing some girl complain about how horrible her life is, how the guy she likes and obsesses about has a girlfriend, and how parents are too "mean," then turn to tube to Nick and watch this snore fest. I'll add another note: there is no comedic value whatsoever in this show.

Howard Gordon
Avg Score: 9.70    Total Ratings: 8    Total Reviews: 1
Howard Gordon, co-creator of The Inside, consulting producer/exec producer/writer on The X-Files, consulting producer/writer on both Angel and Buffy the vampire slayer, and exec producer/show runner of 24, is one of the best minds on TV right now. The Inside was a great, short-loved FOX series, and has much of Howard\'s genius in it. Howard worked on The X-Files from 1993-97, arguably the show\'s prime (and ironically the creator\'s original plan was just four seasons). I have heard very good things about Angel and Buffy. And, well, his work on 24 speaks for itself. He is the showrunner of the best series on television.

Howard Gordon understands what good TV is, and I sure am glad to be living in his era. In my opinion, Howard Gordon deserves to be mentioned in the likes of Aaron Spelling and Jerry Bruckheimer as great TV producers (in the likes of, I wouldn\'t say he\'s as good as them yet, because he hasn\'t been going that long). And the best thing: he\'s only 45. If he keeps it going we could have 20-30 more great years of TV! Cheers to Howard Gordon, and may he continue his great success!

Well I've finally decided to write something worthwhile in here. I'm a teenage male who loves action/adventure shows like 24 and Prison Break, dramas like CSI, Boston Legal, Bones and House and the occassional cartoon like Avatar: The Last Airbender, Family Guy, American Dad! and Danny Phantom. I'm a fairly easy guy to get along with and I'd like to get to know everyone, but unfortunately I can't, I guess. I am a proud TV.com editor and trusted contributor.
