United Artist 90th Anniversary Event
Many local theaters are showing classic United Artist movies to celibrate it's 90th Anniversary.
I just watch the 1960 Best Movie The Apartment with Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine at my local theater. Really, nothing compares to seeing a movie in a theater. It's the little details you can see that gave this masterpiece texture and richness. Mad Men draws a lot from this movie for the 1960s corperate culture of men vs. women.
All the movies in the anniversary series are fresh beautiful new prints.
During the months of July and August these are the UA movies showing in my local theater as double features:
Dr. No & From Russia With Love
The Apartment & Some Like it Hot
The Great Escape & The Magnificent Seven
The Thomas Crown Affair & The Manchurian Candidate
Manhattan & Annie Hall
A Shot in the Dark & The Pink Panther
A Fistful of Dollars & Red River
Raging Bull & Rocky The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
West Side Story
If you can see one of your old favorites in a theater this summer I think it would be well worth your while.

Early Draft of The Dollhouse
Jill Golick gives a wonderful interview on The Joss'd podcast about her reading of an early draft of The Dollhouse. Jill is much better than the interviewer.
The article: Joss and Four Acts.
The interview starts about 35 minutes into the podcast.

Jericho Patriots and Tyrants Avg Score: 9.57 Total Ratings: 367 Total Reviews: 34 |
The thing that I liked most about this show is that the patriot citizens were willing to stand up to the corrupt, illegitimate government. That is a brave and very hard thing to do.
The following are possible parallels to current events:
A private corporation owning/creating a country - reference to corporate power and influence in the U.S. government. This is probable a reference to the mega mercenary company Blackwater an/or Halliburton. Both companies are making big money in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Gray Anderson said, "This convention is a sham. And when it's done I don't think there's anything this government is not going to have the power to do in the name of national security." - reference What George Bush and Dick Chaney has been doing to this country for the last 8 years.
The "patriots" in this show are the citizens standing up to the corrupt, illegitimate government. Patriots in the show do not obey their government blindly. The citizens are the government.
I know this is obvious; September attacks - reference nine eleven

This episode had some wonderful dialog. There must be a special writer just for Andrew. His dialog is so refreshingly quirky.
The crazy slayer that brought Andrew to town looked a lot like the scary girl in the movie The Ring in the opening scene.
The reflective moment between Angel and Spike was so well done. Spike in recovery from his encounter with the crazy vampire slayer. Angel and Spike talk of the lives they destroys when they were evil.
Spike looking at his re attached hands says, She's one of us now. She's a monster.
Angel replies, She's an innocent victim.
So were we, once upon a time.
Angel replies quietly, once upon a time.

At the beginning of a season there always seems to be episodes that don't advance the main show story line. This is one of those episodes. Angel saves a girl from a werewolf. But she is infected by the werewolf's bite and she becomes a werewolf. Angel Inc. helps her get oriented to her new situation. But the girl is kidnapped by a club of rich people that eats supernatural beings. And Angel saves her from the exotic food club, punishing all the bad people.
My problem with this is none of these characters show up for the big stuff that is coming up later in the season. It doesn't even tell us anything new about Angel's Wolfram and Hart take over. In the end only the club owner and the Wolfram Hart employee are punished, the rich patrons get away.
The exotic food club idea came from news stories of real clubs where rich people pay lots of money to eat exotic animals.

Lost The Economist Avg Score: 9.35 Total Ratings: 1038 Total Reviews: 65 |
What is amazing and unique to the "Lost" franchise is how they can reveal so much and in the end you end up with more questions than answers.
This "flash forward" episode was centered on Sayid. From the first scene we learn that Sayid is one of the "Oceanic 6". It gives us a look at Sayid from many different angles. It shows Sayid as a character full of contradictions. He is passionate and ruthless with his lover in Germany; he conceives and executes a plan to rescue Charlotte from Locke, but he still falls into Locke's trap. This episode made me question Sayid's core motivations. Is he good? Is he bad?
I really enjoyed the twist at the end. The storytellers are taking you one way. The clues seem to be telling you that "The Economist" who Sayid is hunting is Ben. But the end made me wonder, "IS Ben one of the good guys?"
