New Person Editorship by welleg

I haven't picked up a person editorship in a long time, so I figured it's a blog-worthy occasion. The ironic thing is, this is one of the first people I submitted trivia for and it took me this long to get 40 points.

The person in mention is Max Kellerman, former host of ESPN's Around the Horn and host of the longe since cancelled I, Max which aired on Fox Sports Net. He currently hosts a radio show on ESPN 1050 in New York.

And a sad note, three years ago today Max's younger brother Sam was found brutally murdered in his LA apartment.

Come Wednesday I will have been editing the ER guide for two years. It's amazing how quickly time has gone by.

I do have to say things are quite different now, but it's been an interesting ride and I've made some great friends along the way.

Why? by welleg

Why do the TV gods hate me so? I wandered into the Law & Order: Criminal Intent forum today and found information about it's new timeslot for the fall. The season premiere airs on October 4th at 10:00 PM. This happens to be a Thursday. There is one huge problem - ER is on at the same.

Ever since hearing CI was going to be moved to USA, I was afraid this was going to happen. I live in a dorm so there is no way for me to record one of the two, which means I am going to have to choose. And since I am editor for ER, that decision is essentailly made for me already.

I really hope NBC airs the CI episodes at some point - there's generally at least on show that gets cancelled fairly quickly.

Reading is Fun by welleg

I get the Chicago Sun-Times via e-mail everyday - just for the sports. I blame this on the fact that I went to the same high school as one of their columnists (Rick Telander) albeit several years later. I had been getting lax about reading the sports happenings in Chicago, but today I sat down and rather enjoyed what I read.

I'll start with Telander's column (http://www.suntimes.com/life****/468563,CST-SPT-rick15.article). He starts out talking about cicadas and how they're finally gone. (Yay for Illinois.) He then moves on to Mark Cuban wanting to buy the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs are in desparate need of new ownership and the sale has to happen since the individual that bought the Tribune Company has a small share in the Chicag White Sox. Telander however brings up a few good points. #1: Cuban lives in Dallas. #2: the Mavs haven't won ay championships lately (if ever). #3: He let Steve Nash leave, which Telander equates to the Tribune Company letting Greg Maddux leave in the early 1990s. I'd say his opinion on Cuban owning the Cubs is luke-warm, at best. He also calls David Beckham a Stepford Husband and thinks he needs to tell his wife to eat a sandwich.

Jay Mariotti, on the other hand, sings a different tune when it comes to Cuban (http://www.suntimes.com/sports/mariotti/469199,CST-SPT-jay15.article). He more or less wants to sell the team to him tomorrow and urges Bud Selig, Jerry Reinsdorf (who seemingly doesn't like Cuban - repeatedly mentioning there was one vote against Cuban buyng the Mavs), and he others to follow suit. With such opposing viewpoints, I'm not surprised the two don't like either much. In fact the two almost got into a fight in a Wrigley Field press box - though the story has seemingly been embellished some (http://www.chicagoreader.com/hottype/2003/030808_1.html).

The next column I read was by Chris De Luca (http://www.suntimes.com/sports/deluca/469319,CST-SPT-deluca15.article ). I have to disagree with his assessment that after half a season, Zito's a bust. So he had a bad first half - it's not like he's the first person to do so. Sure he's making a lot of money, but that doesn't mean he's not allowed to have a slump or two. As for the two losses against Oakland - well duh. He played there how long? They're going to know how he pitches. And for those who have no idea who Zito is, a picture below:

The final column was one written by Carol Slezak (http://www.suntimes.com/sports/slezak/468319,CST-SPT-carol15.article). I generally don't read her columns, but I have to say I was impressed. And I agree with her. Brian Urlacher's personal life is none of our business. Nor should it be. Reading this article I was reminded of a controversy involving two nameless stars of a nameless show. One actor - like Urlacher - acted (as far as I know) completely in private. Therefore it should be none of our business. Sadly, people love to thrive on celebrity dirt, so things that are private and should remain private become public knowledge. However, that does not mean we must discuss them and I for shall abstain from discussing the topic out of respect for this nameless star and his family. The other nameless star, on the other hand, made an ass out of himself on television. While other somewhat unseemly - and to me objectionable - things took place on his own time, some of them occured after his handlers claimed he had already left the nameless country he was in. There is a fine line between the two, but it is there. Once star acted solely in private, while the other acted largely in public and misled an entire nation about his whereabouts. This is a difference between the two scenarios, even if it isn't a large one. That being said, I'm done talking about all it. For good. This includes talking about it without talking out it.

And since I have to wake up in less than five hours, I'm off to bed.

Edit: replace the asteriks in the first link with the word s t y l e s.

Wild Turkey by welleg

The brand new Ph.D. in my lab came to work late today (since he technically doesn't have to come at all) so he had to park way out. While walking toward the Biology building, he saw a wild turkey. He was afraid the poor thing was going to dash out into the street and get run over, so he called animal control, who told him the turkey had been there for three years because the employees at one of the businesses in the vicinity keep feeding. Animal control can't take any action untl it gets hurt or hurts someone

In the afternoon, the lab decided to go on a "turkey hunt." Some little kids had spooked it, so it was wandering around in the middle of the intersection. Cars kindly stopped for it. It was a bold little bugger too - had the what are you doing in my intersection attitude. He finally wandered back to safer territory. Meanwhile, practically everyone in my lab is just standing on the sidewalk laughing at it's antics.
