This is my favorite Season 1 episode. I think it is the first one where Scully really believes and Mulder is skeptical. It was very suspenseful and Boggs was scary but at the same time we felt for him. The scene where he starts singing "Beyond the Sea" is very cool. Scully is totally freaked out. Mulder is also good in this episode - i liked the scene with the T-shirt which Mulder tries to expose Boggs as a fraud by giving him a piece of his own T-shirt. This episode really developed Scully's character -showing us that she is not totally dependent on science, but can be drawn in to believe alternate explanations.

I liked the Mulder/Scully banter in this episode, especially the exchange on the rock - the Ahab stuff and Mulder wondering what it would be like to have a peg leg were classic. Poor Scully loses here precious QueeQueg (sp) and her sad dejected expressions after are a different side I don't remember seeing from her to this point. Mulder's determination at the end to chase down the monster was convincing - I liked the expression on his face when he asked the doctor "which way did he go!?" The shot of the monster at the end was a bit cutesy, but you had to expect that. This was a fun monster-of-the-week installment.

This episode initially drew me in with the teaser - with it's melodic music and Mulder speaking the poem. As I watched it i though the multiple personality of Melissa (while well acted) didn't appeal to me very much. I didnt' really like Mulder's log hypnosis scene either with the extreme close up of his face - all full of emotion and speaking mumbo-jumbo. Mulder and Scully arguing in parts of the episode off-set other episodes where they are all cute with each other, so that was interesting. How could Scully just take those photos from the hall of records (unless they were copies). It was a unique episode for X-files and was shot in a very emotional type way, but didn't do it for me.

This is one of my favorite episodes because it is just fun to watch. I can't say enough about Giovanni Ribisi in this one. I wonder how much he improvised like the burp when his mom is watching TV (actually that was probably scripted), or giving Mulder some candy from the vending machine. The music and effects are awesome. The obnoxious sherriff was pretty annoying though - didn't like that actor much. Jack Black has a great performance as DPO's buddy who tries to convince him to just leave town. I can watch this one anytime - "Your really starting to P1SS me off!!" love that line.

I didn't like all the gore in this episode - I can handle one or two gory scenes, but this one had like 4 or 5. I liked the concept of the episode - the witchcraft angle - it was entertaining that way. Some unexplained stuff was not answered like the pool of blood, and why would the doctor leave his old face on the floor and leave? Maybe he was rushed. It was funny how Mulder was the one constantly looking in the mirror at his nose thinking maybe? he could use some plastic surgery. They could have had Scully doing that, but she is the self-confident one (for good reason!). Good story, but don't watch on a full stomach : )
