From the book Irwin Allen Productions: During the early 1990's, Voyage was rebroadcast in Great Britain. This episode was pulled from from its place in the run and shown several weeks later because of the plot's uncomfortable similarity to current events in the Gulf War.
(edit)
Malachi Throne also appears in "The Enemies" and in Season 4's "The Return of Blackbeard".
(edit)
Abdul Azziz: (to Luana) The weapon you seek is hidden deep in the caverns under the naval base. It's a marvelous weapon, with which our beloved general--may Allah be gracious to him--will make war, and get us all killed.
(edit)
Nelson: Fanaticism is no substitute for intelligence, Amadi.
(edit)
Crane: What's that?
Azziz: A present for our beloved general--Allah glorify his name.
Crane: Dynamite!
Azziz: Liberated from a careless digger of oil wells. These will pulverize the great machine--with hopefully just enough left for the general himself.
Crane: Great work, Abdul.
Luana: But how do we get these explosives over to the machine?
Azziz: The female mind is eternally bogged down with practicalities. (edit) Luana: Where are all the cousins you brag about?
Abdul Azziz: What a burden it is when a man is dependent on his relatives. (edit) Captain Crane: What we need is a diversion.
Abdul Azziz: Under any circumstances a diversion is a pleasant thing, but now it would be a gift from Allah. (edit)

Uncredited roles:
Jon Locke (Jerry), Richard Hale (Sulimani), Dehl Berti (Arab) (edit) While waiting for Abdul's myriad cousins, one of the guards approaches the cavern entrance. Lee and Abdul hastily stuff the dynamite back into the sack and they hide further back in the caverns--leaving one stick of dynamite behind. When seen from the long view, the fuse of the dynamite is pointing at the nearest wall, but in closeups, the fuse is pointing outwards. (edit) Irwin Allen's habit of reusing film clips whenever possible makes Luana look irresponsible (or really exhausted). While hiding out and waiting for a chance to attack the Magnus beam mechanism, Luana falls asleep on Lee's shoulder. She awakens, and they find that Lee's escape has been discovered. Search parties are sent out, putting them in extreme danger, and Luana...falls asleep on Lee's shoulder again! (edit)

The Magnus BeamSuperb "Adventurous" Standard spy fare, perhaps, but quite well done. The character of Abdul Azziz alone makes this episode worth watching, and there's a trio of excellent villains. Continue » Posted Jul 3, 2008 6:35 pm PST |
