Trevor Powers is doing spectacular things with his musical project, Youth Lagoon. His recently released debut album The Year of Hibernation is an affecting, musical wonder...the kind of emotionally charged record only a twenty two year old could churn out. Breezy, devastatingly melodic, and sounding like it was captured in the bottom of a well, the album contains a collection of songs riddled with a wide array of youthful emotions. Anxiety, romance, heartbreak, uncertainty, pure bliss...it is just what accompanies anyone making an honest attempt to get to know themselves. The Year of Hibernation sounds like Powers' vehicle for the process. It sounds like his here and now, his present day. But, in touching on the common complications of twenty-something life, the album also sounds like a haunting relic from the past...which might explain Powers' narrative approach to his video for "Montana". It's a few months old, but definitely worth sharing, if only for the fact that it's probably one of the most affecting, 5 minute pieces of video you'll happen to see this year (or what's left of it anyway). Here, Powers' tells the story of a hidden keepsake, a big old automobile, a father, a son, and the sad fate they share. Have a look below, and try not to completely lose it. It's an absolute tear jerker. But it's f*cking spectacular, which of course is right in line with everything this promising young artist is producing.moreless
