Being a breast surgeon has been exciting over the past several decades, not only because we can do smaller operations like a lumpectomy and accomplish natural looking reconstructions when breast removal is needed, but, we can also prevent disease- the highest goal in medicine. 100 % prevention does mean surgical operations and this is recommended when women have BRCA mutations because these are specific for breast and ovarian cancer. All women can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by decreasing the intake of alcohol, avoiding obesity and with exercise starting at an early age. Educating women and physicians has been a priority in my career and the impetus for writing BREAST CANCER- THE COMPLETE GUIDE and keeping it up to date. It is gratifying to shift emphasis from treatment to prevention.Peter Pressman, MDmoreless
