The number of unsheltered persons or homeless as declined in the past 7 year, but on Coney Island, local merchants say those numbers seemed to have increased along the boardwalk and neighboring sidewalk of Surf and Mermaid Avenues. Businesses say the homeless population is affecting their customer foot traffic during peak Summer tourist season. Reporter Fred Brown spoke to the president of the Coney Island Merchants Association and visited the Coney Island Lighthouse Mission, where a few of the homeless had a chance to speak for themselves.
