Each year for one cold night, the New York City Department of Homeless Services and a team of over 3,000 volunteers head into the streets, from midnight to 4am, to participate in the homeless outreach population estimate, also known as the Hope Project. In Brooklyn, hundreds of volunteers checked-in for training session this year, before heading out to canvass parks, subways, and other public spaces in search of unsheltered people who might need a warm place to lay their heads.
