In the Apocrypha, it is said that one of the pagan soldiers guarding Golgatha, where Jesus was crucified, thought that Jesus had been wrongly sentenced to death. His Centurion commander had gone to Jesus asking that his servant be healed, Jesus agreed and asked to be taken to the servant. The Centurion replied, "I am a commander of men, and I know that when I say something is to be done, that it is done. So if you say that my servant is healed, then I know it is done." Jesus turned to his flock and said, "Do you see how much greater this pagan's faith is than yours?" He turned back to the Centurion, having felt his power move through the world and said, "It is accomplished. Go to your servant. He is well." Having heard this story the Roman guard did not understand what great threat the magician Jesus posed to anyone. Taking pity on his suffering, the guard soaked a sponge in his own meal, reportedly a cold tomato stew, and gave it to Jesus to quench his thirst. In legend, the guard's name was Gazpacho. From Spanish tradition, and radiating outward from that, now almost all cold vegetable soups (with the exception of vichysoisse) are now known as Gazpacho. It includes a wide variety of recipes, but the common theme is that the central ingredient isn't actually a vegetable, but a fruit, such as the tomato. I discovered that watermelons are a very fine addition to this long standing tradition.moreless
