Full Bleed is a photography book coming out through Vice that has photos of skating in New York City from the last 30+ years. It was put together by Ivory Serra, Alex Corporan, and Andre Razo, with images from over 50 photographers. Patrick O’Dell is one of those photographers, and since he is the host of this show, we put the camera on him, as well as a few other people Jon Mehring and Tobin Yelland, and came up with this episode. We also got a chance to talk with Peter Bici. Beside being featured in several photos in the book, he is also good friends with a majority of the other skaters in there as well.moreless

Sometimes old footage doesn’t make it in on time for Epicly Later’d. In the case of Max Schaaf ‘s episodes, the mother load of Pine Street Mob and Widow Maker footage came in a month late. From the reaction of everyone who watched Max’s episodes we felt that it would be a shame not to show at least some of what was sent to us.moreless

It has been a minute since a new Epicly Later’d has gone up, so who better than to come back with than Brian Anderson. Since 1996 Brian has constantly have evolved as a pro skater. When his first video part came out in Toy Machine’s Welcome to Hell, he came out of nowhere and held his own along side some of the heaviest names in skateboarding at the time. By the time his second part came out, in Jump off a Building, he was pro. To continue his ascension to legend status, the following year he was awarded Thrasher’s S.O.T.Y. It would seem that with natural progression his skating would have slowed a bit, but it only got heavier. He moved on to Girl Skateboards, and his skating got even better. Anytime one of the Girl or Fourstar videos comes out he seems to be killing everything at demos with the new hungry guys on the team. I think Patrick says it best in the intro when he talks about Brian being a regular dude who happened to get the opportunity to become pro, and didn’t kook it.moreless

After weeks of watching Girl and Antihero roll around sparsely populated skate parks, drink, camp, and generally fuck around, it's nice to finally see the teams do some real tour work. Of course, by "work," I mean more skateboarding, but this time with a larger crowd. At a demo for the two skate teams in Portland, Girl's Eric Koston lands a trick that renders him momentarily Christ-like to a crowd of middle school boys. Julien Stranger, Max Schaff and Rick Howard remark on how fast their little skater, Robbie Russo, is growing up as he signs autographs at his first demo.moreless

What would an Epicly Later'd series be without a little history lesson? After the first demo in Portland, we stopped at Burnside on the way out of town for what seemed to be a quick session. What it turned into was Rick McCrank getting three amazing tricks and a chance to talk to Julien Stranger and John Cardiel about their Fucktard era excursions to Burnside. All the Super 8 footage in this episode was from Tobin Yelland's archives from time he spent filming with the Deluxe guys. Some of the footage you may already have seen, but a good portion of it never made it into any videos. We also had a chance to speak with Pat Quirk about Burnside's early days and how it affected Portland's scene. If you loved Non-Fiction, Ride On, the Spitfire Video, and Fucktards, this episode is kinda perfect.moreless

At the second of three demos, Girl and Antihero skate the Orcas Island Park: Grindline designed, Dreamland poured. In a surprise turn of events, the magical ceremony performed on the demo’s eve between skaters and wizard sticks seems to be working against them on the concrete. It’s almost as though drinking one’s height in beer may not be an excellent, mystical method of preparation for a skateboarding demo. Mike Carroll is among the first to note this bizarre relationship between his wizard status and powers on the board. Keegan Sauder makes a surprise appearance and attempts to judge the relative Canadianess of fellow skaters Rick Howard and Rick McCrank, and the latter Rick narrowly avoids having the worst time ever with Eric Koston. After the demo, new levels of wizardry are achieved at a house party, this time without sticks, as someone’s head magically goes through a window and an inflatable beer can vanishes without a trace! The magic continues into the next day as Mike Carroll dons a golden cape befitting of a wizard so powerful.moreless

There were rumors that the Beauty and the Beast tour would carry on forever, ending only when the last skater fell off the mortal coil. Unfortunately, those rumors were untrue and now we find ourselves at the tenth and final installment of our journey out West with Girl and Antihero. But, at this point, doesn’t it feel a little strange to divide this group of men with two labels? It’s plain to see that, not unlike a two-part Voltron, they’ve coalesced into a single super team. Going around the scene of the final demo, our reporters collect votes for tour MVP with little consensus emerging beyond the fact that Mike Carroll was “most likely to be drunk at any given moment.” Surveying the local skaters, Brian Anderson announces a second superlative: “kid with the most fucked up board,” to whom he bestows a gift. And with that heartwarming moment, we end this chapter of Epicly Later’d.moreless

In this part Josh gets on Toy Machine, gets his carton of smokes, and then quits. Well, it’s not that simple but you’ll see. One thing worth pointing out is that Josh filmed some of the Jamie Thomas archival footage. It’s pretty cool to think about there being a time when you could be out skating and see Jamie Thomas and Josh Kalis filming each others’ video parts. With that being said, we would like to thank Jamie for digging up this footage and letting us use it.moreless

Ted Lee provided the archival footage of a young Kalis, and if there had been more time we would have loved to show more of Ted’s incredible old footage that includes a New Deal demo with Ed Templeton and Mike Vallely. Enjoy.moreless

In Part 5 Josh is fully on Alien, putting it down in Dallas and SF and running hard with Lennie Kirk. Most of the footage in this episode is courtesy of Jason Koen. Jason is one of Josh’s skate homies from Dallas, and it seems he filmed a lot of his Time Code part. You can see more of his stuff here We would also like to thank RB Umali and Brad Johnson for providing some amazing unseen footage.moreless

It seems like Josh always partners up with another skater when he gets to a new city, and luckily for skateboarding he chose Stevie Williams when he returned to the city of brotherly love. Part 6 deals with the Love Park renaissance of the late 90’s and all the amazing Fat Bill footage that goes along with it. The grand finale for what seems to be one of our most fan-approved series is here. It is hard to try to fit in all the events in 18 years of someone’s life, but we tried. Some might be wondering where all the Chicago talk is or why we didn’t go into Seek. The short answer for Chicago is that we ran out of time, but not without a valiant effort from the Uprise Skateshop crew, especially Jonathan Methvin and Justin Edwards. As for Seek, you’ll just have to wait for Stevie’s series. Please enjoy the episode.moreless

I love it when old ladies get mad at people skating on their property. I like it when old ladies get outraged in general, whether it’s due to loud noises or if they think something cost too much. One time I saw an old lady throw a bag of hot dogs at this guy working at the Goffle Grill because she thought she was being short-changed. In this particular episode of the Brandon Westgate series, not only is the skating the gnarliest, but an old lady tries to impede his efforts in constructing the perfect video part.moreless

You know when the Dalai Lama dies and all the older monks go out and scour the country side for his reincarnation? That’s kind of what Steve Rodriguez does every time someone is poached from his team. Instead of laying out bells, glasses, and other assorted Lama possessions on a blanket to see if any of the young Lama candidates recognize them, Steve has a demo at Solstice Skate Shop in New Bedford, Massachusetts and lets the next big thing skateboarding come to him. tmoreless

Brandon Westgate’s part in Stay Gold was fucking awesome. To people really paying attention, this was not much of a surprise—he’s been killing it for about 6 years now. Brandon is usually the kind of person that people write about by saying “he lets his skating do the talking,” and that really doesn’t work for our purposes, so Patrick went up to Wareham and coaxed Brandon into talking about cranberry bogs, lawn mower parts, and dentists who trade Vicodins for BJs.moreless

The Josh Kalis series starts next week, and it should be one of the most thorough episodes we have ever done. Josh’s career in skating has spanned almost 20 years, and his affiliations with so many major spots and skaters made putting this one together a little daunting. However, all that allows for a diverse cast and a good amount of quality footage to make its way into this upcoming installment of Epicly Later’d. Peace to the Board Breakers.moreless

It hasn’t been too long since the Antwuan and Dylan episodes aired, but the time has come for us to return to some long-form episodes. First up will be Josh Kalis. Everything from his tre flip to Lennie Kirk will be discussed, and if there has ever been a star-studded cast in an Epicly Later’d these, I would say, give them a run for their money. Also in the works is a Ricky Oyola episode that should be out sooner rather than later, and who hasn’t been waiting for that? The OG Menace team has been more than accommodating when it comes to telling their story of being part of one of the most popular skate companies of the nineties. Joey Suriel, Fabian Alomar, Eric Pupecki, Javier Nunez, Steven Cales, and the ever-youthful Billy Valdez have come through so far, and we’re just waiting on Kareem. There are other episodes planned, and even started, and this little trailer is just a taste of what is to come.moreless

The Antwuan Dixon Epicly Later'd has finally arrived. I think there is good mix of what really happens when you spend the day with Antwuan. You can either chill by a pool and talk about your favorite skaters or you can head to a major skateboard contest and have the riot squad called in. Aside from all that, Beagle came through with some alternate angles and raw clips of some of Antwuan's older footage that'll remind you of why he's been one of the most talked about skaters regardless of his legal or tattoo situation. His style is truly beyond.moreless

Most younger skaters might not know about Mark or remember some of the companies he ran/owned like Color and Prime Skateboards.

From 1993 to 1997 Ricky Oyola put out a steady stream of photos and videos that were impressive whether you were from California or the East Coast. But what really made Ricky’s career unique was that he was the head of a movement. Part of his appeal was that he was so focused on representing East Coast companies and East Coast style of city skating, that when all the companies disappeared so too did Ricky’s vehicle for getting out his message.
