Saul Cornell discusses his book A Well-Regulated Militia: The Founding Fathers and the Origins of Gun Control in AmericaCornell explores the opposing sides of the gun control debate, saying both sides of the debate point to the 2nd amendment of the Constitution to support their views. According to professor Cornell, both sides base their opinions on a flawed understanding of the amendment. Prof. Cornell says that gun rights supporters focus on "the right to bear arms," whereas the gun control proponents look at the preamble, which addresses having a "well-regulated militia." According to Prof. Cornell, the 2nd amendment guarantees neither an individual right nor a right of the state but a civic right to protect the nation, state and community.Saul Cornell is an associate professor of history at Ohio State University and is the director of the Second Amendment Research Center at the John Glenn Institute. He specializes in constitutional history and has studied at University of Sussex. He received his BA from Amherst College and a MA and Ph.D from the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of "The Other Founders: Anti-Federalism and the Dissenting Tradition in America" and the editor of "Whose Right to Bear Arms Did the Second Amendment Protect?"moreless
