Thinking Ahead: The foreign policy of the next Conservative government with William Hague.William Hague, Shadow Foreign Secretary, tells an audience at Chatham House that tougher sanctions are needed on Iran. Mr Hague warns that if Iran proceeds with the development of a nuclear bomb, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, a fundamental pillar of international peace and security, will lie broken and ruined. He says that a combination of carrots and sticks are required to put pressure on Iran to adhere to the treaty. On the Middle East more broadly, Mr Hague says that UK politicians should be steeped in knowledge of the affairs of the region. He says that "the potential dangers that lie ahead call for the maximum understanding of Middle Eastern societies as well as a firm anchoring of the friendships between countries of the Middle East and of the wider West"Mr Hague also says a Tory administration would put more political weight on developing relationships in the Asia-Pacific region whilst offering Washington "honest criticism." This, however, should not be taken as a distancing of the UK from the US, but more of the UK recovering the art of managing the relationship well.moreless
