I Love Alaska

Show Summary

I Love Alaska is the story of one AOL user's search queries as a mirror to her life. In 2006, America Online accidentally leaked 650,000 users' search histories, for the whole internet to see. The histories had everything they searched over three months, and AOL quickly pulled them down, but not before some of them ended up on other websites. One of the users had a history that was particularly telling of what her life was like. In I Love Alaska, we meet a middle-aged woman from Houston Texas whose searches tell a personal story of a woman who spends much of her life alone behind the TV and computer. Her searches are quietly read aloud by a voice-over transposed over calm shots of nature and Alaska, and they paint a picture of a woman diligently searching for likeminded people, while attempting to diagnose her many hypochondriac worries. Her searches vary from wondering about bumps on her skin, to why her dog pees so much, to trying to find ways to rejuvenate her sex life and even trying to find out if George Clooney is gay. We see her downfall as she cheats on her husband with a man she meets online, and is filled with regret, looking to start a new life in Alaska.
