On The Street is the New York Times video series that follows fashion photographer Bill Cunningham as he takes to the streets of New York City to document trends and styles he sees. Bill was on track to get a degree from Harvard University, until he decided to drop out in 1948 and pack his bags for New York City. He got his start in advertising, but soon quit, deciding to change courses again and make his own hat company. After being drafted for a tour in the Army, he returned and became a writer for the Chicago Tribune. As he worked as a writer, he discovered a passion for fashion journalism, and he went on to work at the Tribune and Women's Wear Daily, taking photos of the fashion that he saw in the streets around him. He became famous for his candid and street photography, documenting celebrities and normal people in their lives in New York.
